Greatteacherscomefromallwalksoflife.Often,thatiswhatmakesthemsogreat.TopekaPublicSchoolsvaluesdiversity.Ifyouareinterestedintransitioningtoteachingfromanotherprofessionalcareer,pleasevisittheKansasDepartmentofEducationwebsiteatwww.ksde.org.Under“TeachingandLearning”,select“EducatorLicensure”.Whenyouclickit,youwillfindinformationon“RoutestotheClassroom”.Exploreeverythingfromrenewinganexpiredteachinglicensetoacquiringasubstituteteachinglicense.Ifyouhavetaughtandholdaprofessionalteachinglicensefromanotherstate,youwillbeabletowalkthroughtheprocessofacquiringaKansasstatelicensetoteach.Individualswithadegreeinthesubjectneededcanobtainarestrictedteachinglicense.Selecttheroutethatisbestforyou.Weneedgreatteachers!
TherearealsooptionsavailableforpeoplewhohavedegreesinareasotherthaneducationtoobtaintheirElementaryTeachingCertificate.Thoseprogramsinclude:
• Kansas State University—Earnamastersdegreeandelementaryteachinglicenseonlinein12months. www.global.k-state.edu/education/master-of-arts-teaching
• Washburn University—ParaprofessionaltoTeacherprogram—designedforpeoplecurrentlyworkingasaparaprofessionalwhowouldliketobecomeaLicensedTeacherinSpecialEducationorSTEM.ContactDr.GloriaDye@[email protected]
• MidAmerica Nazarene University—AcceleratedBachelorofArtsinElementaryEducation.Thison-siteprogramisstructuredsoyoucanworktowardabachelor’sdegreeinelementaryorlicensureinaflexibleformat,builtspecificallyforworkingadults.Youcancompleteadegreeorlicensureprograminonly18months.
• Friends University—TheElementaryEducationprogrampreparesadultstudentstoteachgradesK-6.Mostclassesareofferedintheeveningtoallowyoutomaintainyourwork,family,andothercommitments.However,thereareoccasionaldaytimeandSaturdayrequirementsasyoucompleteyourfieldexperiences,includingstudentteaching.
• PittsburgState—PSUistheonlyuniversityinthestateofKansastoofferanOnlineMastersofArtsinTeachingwithanemphasisinSpecialEducation(AdaptiveLevel6-12).ThisprogramisdesignedforparaprofessionalswithaBSorBAdegreeinanon-teachingcontentareawhowanttoteachadaptivespecialeducationingrades6-12.Thiscohortisa36-hourprogram,6hourseachsemester,beginninginthesummer.ContactDr.AliceSagehorn,Chairperson,[email protected].
