“Life is short, but there is always time enough for courtesy.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet 03 POLISH YOUR SKILLS Q I don’t really under- stand the concept of RSVP. Can you please help me get familiar with the term and its importance in the world of etiquette? – Curious Kid A. It’s great that you are mindful enough to try and understand manners and its significance as well as practicality. Here’s all about it in detail. Meaning and role: RSVP, the abbrevi- ation for the French phrase “respon- dez s’il vous plait,” means “please respond.” Whether it’s a birthday party, a wedding or some other occa- sion, a timely response will enable the host to provide enough food, drinks, and party essentials for those attend- ing without overbuying or buying less. Not responding can cause confusion and possibly embarrassment later, for both the host and guest. What should you do? The proper thing to do is send an RSVP back with an acceptance or decline as soon as you know whether or not you’ll be able to par- ticipate. Not responding makes it dif- ficult for the host or hostess to plan and this can keep you off future guest lists. Cancelling an RSVP with- out a good reason is rude – avoid doing this unless there is a genuine reason and inform the host and apol- ogise. Give RSVP due respect. According to Ron Gutman, the author of ‘Smile: The Astonishing Powers of a Simple Act’, “One smile can generate the same level of brain stimulation as, up to 2,000 bars of chocolate!” Research shows that happiness is the result of smiling, con- trary to what people believe. In fact, even a forced smile can lead to a mood boost. Usually, we think that a posi- tive experience is what makes us smile. But smiling is a positive expe- rience in itself. Check these reasons that will put a smile on your face. SMILE TO BE HAPPY People who smile frequently are perceived as being more confident and successful. You have either woken up with a start and want to go back to sleep or are already on your way to school and regretting every minute of it. Congratulations, you have been diagnosed with a clas- sic case of Monday morning blues. It does not matter what you do, Monday blues don’t really dis- criminate. One minute you are heading home and celebrating the end of another busy week, anoth- er minute, you blink your eyes and the alarm is blaring at seven in the morning. Monday is back again. If you find yourself in a grumpy mood at the beginning of every week, do these 4 things to cheer yourself up and get going. 2 CHANGE YOUR THINKING: Instead of getting up and thinking, “Oh, another Monday” say, “Okay, I get to see my friends.” The reason for positivi- ty can differ from person to per- son, but it’s important to con- sciously stop yourself from think- ing that Mondays are the worst. 4 WRITE DOWN WHY YOU LOVE SCHOOL: Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no such thing as a perfect school and a per- fect life. Every school has rules and exams and requires hard work. So, you might as well enjoy the little things your school life has to offer – like sharing lunch with your best friend, playing basketball af- ter classes are over and so on. ADAPTED FROM TNN DO YOU WANT TO BE MORE LIKEABLE? Yes, it’s possible, if you avoid some habits that are not exactly popular F rom the time we were kids, we were conditioned to be- lieve it was important to be likeable – it meant getting re- warded or getting your hands on what you asked for. Having amiable qualities also ensured that you were part of a group and not left to fend for yourself. A lot of people believe that being likeable is a trait that you are gifted with, but that is not the entire truth. Likeability has nothing to do with inherent characteristics like being so- cial or attractive. Here are 5 habits you need to get rid of in order to be more likeable. Hogging the limelight There is always that one person who walks in to a room and demands all the attention. From talking over others to not giving them the time to speak about themselves, an attention hogger wants people to just talk about him/her and not anybody else. So, in case you are used to drawing all the atten- tion, rethink and give people the time and space to talk about themselves. Gossiping endlessly When you indulge in unnecessary, demeaning conversation about others, people assume you may do the same behind their back too. Backbiting, as the word suggests, implies that you have nothing good to talk about so you gossip as much as possible behind peo- ple’s back. Humble-bragging? No! We have all witnessed humble-bragging. People do this to seek compliments and highlight their qualities, hiding them beneath modest state- ments. Imagine someone who walks in wearing a really fancy pair of shoes and then com- plaining about how ordi- nary his/her shoes look. Yes, that is annoying and that’s humble-bragging. Just avoid it. Displaying moodiness Anyone who is not in control of his/her emotions is kept at arm’s length. Whether you’re shouting at the top of your voice when things are rough or using passive- aggressive statements in case of disagreement, temperamental people are not appreciated. Oversharing is not so cool after all Whether it is social media or real life, when you show- case your life a little too much, it can be off- putting. Avoid sharing deeply personal information, if you are not that close to the said person. It could be overwhelm- ing for some and plain irritating for others. Keep personal talk for very close friends and family. TNN LIFE SKILLS It is important to under- stand that there will be days when you won’t feel like getting up from bed, and follow a schedule – that’s really okay. Don’t be guilty about it 3 TREAT YOURSELF: Whether it is pancakes for breakfast or an indulgent smoothie, make it a point to treat yourself with your favourite deli- cacy on Mondays. It will release feel- good hormones. 1 LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE GET- TING READY: Yes, when you are feeling grumpy and iron- ing your school dress.
