How can a writer locate predicates in a sentence?

WHAT IS A VERB?

It is a word that shows action or a state of being.

• Action: run, swim, jump, leap, fall, dream

• State of Being: be, appear, seem, feel

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TENSES?(VERB TENSE: LETS US KNOW WHEN THE

ACTION HAPPENS)

• Present tense: I eat pizza often.

• Past tense: I ate pizza last night.

• Future tense: I will eat pizza later today.

• Present perfect tense: I have eaten pizza many times.

• Past perfect tense: I had eaten pizza just before you arrived.

• Future perfect tense: I will have eaten pizza at least a million times by the year 2020.

KEEP VERB TENSE CONSISTENT

While you write, it is important to make sure you keep all verb tenses the same!

Example:

WEAK

I got home late and Mom fusses at me for not calling to let her know where I will be.

BETTER

I got home late and Mom fussed at me for not calling to let her know where I had been.

HOW TO LOCATE SUBJECT AND PREDICATE

Subject- What/who the sentence is about or what/who performs an action

Predicate- part of the sentence that contains the verb and states something about the subject

***Locate the main verb in the sentence in order to separate the subject from the predicate

EXAMPLE SENTENCE:

The dark alley is a scary place.
