American Involvement

• 1930: US declares neutrality• 1941: FDR persuades congress to pass Lend-

Lease Act– allowed to sell or lend war materials to “any

country whose defense the President deems vital to the defense of the US”

• US “the arsenal of democracy”• August 1941: Atlantic Charter– Churchill & FDR met on a ship in the Atlantic

• Goal: final destruction of Nazi tyranny

US vs. JAPAN

• 1939 Japan expanded to grab European resources & possessions in Southeast Asia

• US banned sale of war materials to Japan – stop Japanese aggression

• Japan saw this as an attempt to interfere in their sphere of influence

• Talks between US & Japan about growing tensions

• General Tojo Hideki– extreme militarist with goals to

expand empire

Pearl Harbor

• General Tojo ordered a surprise attack• December 7, 1941 • Japanese airplanes bombed the American fleet at

Pearl Harbor in Hawaii• About 2,400 lives were lost• “a date which will live in infamy”• FDR asked congress to declare war on Japan• December 8, 1941

• December 11, 1941 Germany and Italy declared war on USA as Japan’s allies
