Diversion ChannelDiversion channels are artificial channels acts as a different route for excess water to flow further mitigating the effects of flooding and restoring rivers to their natural water level. Typically, diversion channels are built around communities or economic centers to prevent extensive flood damage.

Purpose1. To divert waters from the main channel2. Flood control, 3. Municipal water supply, 4. Irrigation etc.

ClassificationThey are basically following types:1. Portable check dams,2. Diversion boxes, 3. Turnout boxes, 4. Pipe turnouts.

FloodwaysThe channel of a river or stream and theparts of the floodplain adjoining the channelthat are reasonably required to efficientlycarry and discharge the flood water or floodflow of a river or stream.

Page 7: Diversion channel, water way and spreading ground

PurposeThey serve mainly two functions to flood assessment:1. By providing an additional channel storage

for sorting a portion of a flood water.2. By opening up a new channel to carry a part

of the main stream flow

Spreading GroundsFlood flows are sometimes diverted into large flat land areas that are capable of absorbing water at relatively high rates

Page 10: Diversion channel, water way and spreading ground

PurposeMain purposes are:1. Spreading grounds serve to reduce the downstream flood peaks,2. Replenish under ground water reservoir 3. Groundwater withdrawn for human use4. Artificial recharge helps prevent aquifer depletion
