Angs toe
rowermes
opbabarig
JAMEY GORDON
n Jong ma van die Strand het n
paar oomblikke van angs beleef
toe n rower n mes teen haar ba-
ba sewanggedrukhet in ngewa-
pende rooftog.
maak ek. Hy het n mes uit sy
broeksak gepluk en teen die baba se
wang gedruk voor hy die ma van
haar kontant beroof het.
Ek het magteloos gevoel toe die
man n mes uitpluk en dit teen Con-
nortjie se wang druk, het Van Log-
gerenberg ges.
Sy vertel die voorval het om-
streeks 16:40 verlede Donderdag in
die Galloway-sentrum plaasgevind,
waar haar haarsalon en woonstel
gele is.
manshaar gevolg enprobeer omdie
stootwaentjie vir haar te stoot. By
die hyser gekom, het een van die
mans haar weer vir ietsie gevra,
maar sy het ges sy het nie in daar-
die stadium iets by haar nie.
Opdaardieoomblikhetdiebeang-
ste Connor die man teen die skouer
geklap.
Ek is net
baieblyalbei vanonshet ongedeerd
daarvan afgekom.
Die Strand-polisie ondersoek n
saak van roof.
Herman Ras, gewapende reaksie-
bestuurder van die Secure Rite-se-
kerheidsmaatskappy, ag die voor-
val as ontstellend.
buurtwagtemoetdiepolisiebehoor-
lik ondersteun ommisdaad te voor-
kom en gewetenlose misdadigers
stop te sit.

Manvertel vanmisluktemotordiefstal
DELIAH BRINKHUIS
Toe hy inmyo spuit, was dit
asof ek met blindheid geslaan
is.
Dis hoe Jannie Schenck (73)
van Somerset-Wes die peper-
sproei-aanval op hom, verlede
Vrydag, onthou.
Volgens Schenck was hy op
pad na die kliniek in Hoofweg,
Strand toehy syToyotaYaris net
voor 07:00 by die Fasie-Faure
plein, agter Hoofweg parkeer
het.
Schenck vertel dat dit toe nog
skemer was en dat daar slegs n
paar ander motors geparkeer
was. n Paar meter verder het hy
twee mans aangeloop sien kom.
grootoog. Schenck s dat een van
diemans homvinnig omgeswaai
Nous hier n gemors, ek sal moet keer,
het ek gedink, vertel hy.
Ek het geskree dat daai plek antwoord
gee, ek het net HELP HELP geskree.
Binne sekondes het n sekerheidswag aan-
gehardloop gekom.
Volgens Schenck het n groot fris kaalvoet
man in nkortbroekengewapenmet ngholf-
stok vanuit n ander rigting aangestorm ge-
kom.
Waars hy, waars hy?
Ek sal hom vrek slaan!
het hy geskree, onthou
Schenck.
Volgens Schenck het sy
aanvallers laat spaander.
Hulle het besef dinge
raak tewarm. Toe ekweer
sien woerts, het hy uit
die kar gespring en het
hulle indie rigtingvandie
nabygele arkade gehard-
loop, vertel hy.
Met ondersoek het
Schenck ontdek dat die
sleutel in die aanskake-
laar afgebreek het.
Hy s nog n jongerige
manhet byhulle komaan-
sluitomtehelp.Hykoneg-
ter nie die gebreekte sleu-
telverwydernieomdatdie
motor nie wou aanskakel
nie.
Na n paar probeerslae
het die motor wel aange-
skakelenisdiesleutelver-
wyder.
Die sekerheidswag het
water gebring sodat

Lwandle eviction hearings getting nasty
Politicalmudslingingescalatedwith
the start of the public hearings into
the Lwandle evictions this week.
Both theCityofCapeTownandthe
province opted for written submis-
sions and reserved their right to
comment on the inquirys findings
on Tuesday.
Western Cape premier Helen Zille
said theinquirycommitteeeffective-
ly gave the province, its human set-
tlements department and the city
one working days notice to prepare
an oral submission.
Zille also said the committee prob-
ing the Lwandle evictions has all the
hallmarks of a political hit squad,
as it consists mainly of ANC parlia-
mentary members.
Zille further pointed out that
SesKhona has allegedly been in-
volved in facilitating and encourag-
ing land invasions, hijacking the re-
lief efforts by the City for their own
patronage purposes and involving
thelocalANCcouncillorsintheseac-
tivities.
She says charges have been laid
against members of SesKhona and
a local ANC councillor Mbuyiselo
Matha, for allegedly kidnapping se-
curity guards on the Sanral site and
holding them hostage.
The City submission highlighted
the following key elements:
Only73of thepeopleevicted from
the Sanral land are legally on the
Citys housing database.
Most are relatively new entrants
to the list.
There are currently over 15 000
individuals on the Helderberg hous-
ing database who have been waiting
for a housing opportunity.
2 300 of these people havebeenon
the database (1979 to 1998) since be-
fore the first applicants from Lwan-
dle and Nomzamo.
Since the beginning of the year,
SesKhona has actively encouraged
people to invade the Sanral land,
selling plots to the evictees for as
much as R2 500.
The City will be providing basic
services such as water and sanita-
tion once the temporary structures
on the Sanral site are completed.

Volgens Smit was Laubscher be-

mense in was nie. Volgens Oosthui-
zen was daar niemand nie, maar kon

HIKE IN PARKING TARIFFS: The
City of Cape Town increased its park
ing rates as from the beginning of Ju
ly. According to Brett Herron, mayoral
committee member: transport for Cape
Town, the updated parking tariffs
were adopted by the City Council as
part of the 2014/15 budget. The tar
iffs are not new, but have been ad
justed for the first time in three finan
cial years. He says two categories of
parking tariffs are applied, one for
the Cape Town CBD (R3 per 15 min
utes or part thereof) and the other for
the rest of the metropolitan area (R2
per 15 minutes). The higher tariff ap
plied to the Cape Town CBD accounts
for the higher demand for parking in
this area. This Ace parking attendant

City slow to shift sewage
CASSY VAN EEDEN
On 4 July raw sewage began bubbling up
into the garden of a Gordons Bay resi-
dence, the third consecutive year that
this unpleasant occurrence has hap-
pened.
Its never been this bad though, said ten-
ant Julian White.
Whitehad first contacted themunicipality
at 13:00 on 4 July to report the problem, but
by 5 July, after the heavy rains from the pre-
vious night, the entire propertywas flooded.
The owner of the property, Lindsay Eber-
sohn, also visited the municipality that af-
ternoon to complain.
White said that officials from the Water
and Sanitation Depot only arrived at 17:00.
They did nothing, left saying theywould be
back later, said White.
By 21:00 that evening White just gave up
and went to bed.
The following morning, after the entire
garden had been covered in raw sewage, an
official arrived and located the blockage.
White said that the municipal workers
then used pressurised water in an attempt
to move the mess away from the house, but
in the process simply spread it even further
around the property.
The following Monday workers returned
to sanitise the area with chemicals.
White and his girlfriend were told not to
enter the garden or let their dogs walk there
as the chemicals were poisonous. Theywere
also told that someone would visit the prop-
erty again in a few days to cover the chemi-
cals with sand.
At the time of going to press, no-one had
visited the property to cover the chemicals.
Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral
committee member for utility services, said
that the City of Cape Town sincerely regret-
ted the fact that the resident had been affect-
ed that way.
Sonnenberg said thatwhen the
problemwas reported, the water
and sanitation depot had already
received 20 sewage-related com-
plaints that day andas suchwas
unfortunatelyunable toattend to
this fault before 17:00.
When the team arrived at the
residence it had been raining for
some time. The mains were thus
fullofwater,andassuchtheteam
wasunable todeterminethe loca-
tion of the blockage.
The decision was taken to re-
turnwhen the rainhad subsided,
but the rain continued through-
out thenight. The team therefore
only returned early the next
morning to unblock the system.
A property in Anchorage Park, Gordons Bay was flooded with raw sewage after the
heavy rains on the weekend of 4 July.

)With regards to the vet saga,
yes I fully agree they can sugar
coat it as much as they want, but
its about time the animal hospi

MandelaDay?
On Friday 18 July South Africans
celebrateMandela Day by giving up
67 minutes of their time to a worthy
cause.
This is also the first year that we
will celebrate our former Presi-
dents birthday without him being
here to witness it.
Mandela Day is not a public holi-
day, but a day on which we can hon-
our the legacy of this great man by
giving up 67 minutes of our time for
community service.
MandelaDayis thesedaysaglobal
call to actionwith the idea that each
individual has within themselves
the power to transform the world
and the ability to make an impact.
Helderberg residents of all ages
and fromallwalks of lifewill be join-
ing in the celebrations by offering
their time, efforts andwhere needed
funds to help those less fortunate
than themselves.
Among themanywonderful offer-
ings are knitting scarves and jer-
seys, making soup and sandwiches
and then taking these to shelters,
schools, old age homes and church-
es.
Mandela Day is such a wonderful
initiative and brings out the best in
people resulting in hundreds of
charitablegooddeedsall done inone
day.
Wouldnt it be wonderful if we
could all perform at least one good
deed or one act of kindness or sup-
port one charity every single day?
Think of how much goodness we
would generate and how much we
would inspire others to do the same.
We shouldnt have to wait for one
specific day in the year before we
perform a good deed - we should try
and do something good every day.

Give responsibly

Councillor Benedicta van Min-
nen of sub-council 22 and ward 15
advocates that by giving hand-outs
to people begging on the street only
keeps them there.
There are alternatives to giving
street people money.
For only R10 residents can pur-
chase a voucher to give to someone
begging which entitles them to a
shower, sleeping bag, blanket, a
meal, toiletriesandaccesstoasocial
workerwho canassist them in their
upliftment.
Vouchers can be purchased at the
night shelter offices in Church
Street, from Helderberg Crime
Watch, Vitus Schola, the Life
Church and United Church.
A recent debate on the Somerset
West Facebook page drew attention
to the plight of street people.
During theFacebookdebate there
was an appeal to law enforcement
to remove street people.
Although there is no bylaw that
prevents begging, VanMinnen said
that it is not a lack of law enforce-
ment that keeps people on the
streets, instead it is residents who
subsidise them, she said.
Thebylawonlyprohibitsaggres-
sivebeggingandblockingtheroad,
said Van Minnen.
The City of Cape Town recently
launched their Give Responsibly
campaign which aims to draw
awareness to the issue of the cycle
that is perpetuatedbygivingmoney
to street people.
Too often in the winter months,
Helderberg residents with big
hearts will pity beggars who stand
in thecoldandrainasking for finan-
cialsupport, saystheCitysmayoral
committee member for Social De-
velopment, councillor Suzette Lit-
tle.
Unfortunately, fieldworkers re-
port that people livingon the streets
feel that theymakemoremoneybeg-
ging and refuse assistance, says
councillor Stuart Pringle of ward 84
and chairperson of sub-council 22.
Pringle said living on the streets
is a dangerous, undignified exist-
ence and giving directly to street
people does not encourage them to
leave this lifestyle behind.
The campaign encourages people
to make donations to organisa-
tions that assist street people rath-
er thankeeping themonthestreets
in a pattern of dependency, said
Little.
Give Responsibly is a City of Cape
Town initiative that encourages Hel
derberg residents to not give hand
outs to people who beg but to
rather donate to local NGOs or to
purchase nightshelter vouchers.

Newlook forSWNedbank
Nedbank in Somerset West recently over-
hauled not only its look, but also its system
to afford clients a more comfortable
banking experience.
Nelis de Necker, branch manager at Somer-

tions is that tellersand informationclerkshave

is that the bank incorporated a seating queue
with comfortable couches to replace the stand-
ing queue.
On entering the bank, clients are met by a
service champion who helps clients to access
the service needed. Clients are given a number
in thequeueandcanwait their turnona couch,
equipped with an iPad. The bank also boasts
private video banking stations where clients
can Skype with a teller.
Internet and phone banking services are also
on offer with no charge to the customer. De
Necker says the renovations started on 24
March and were completed on 11 July. He says
the bank was only closed on four days, but tell-
ers were available to offer emergency services.

What doesmoneymean to you?
Establishing if you
have enough for re-
tirement is a fairly
simple exercise of
determining how
much income you
need to fund your
lifestyle and then
calculating how
much capital is re-
quired to provide
for this income us-
ing an assumed rate
of return, which is
governed by your
risk and return pro-
file.
Sounds likequiteamouthful, but
really fairly simple, which is why
I think there may be more to the
question do I have enough for re-
tirement than initially meets the
eye.

question of holistic fi-
nancial planners,
what does money
mean to you. What is
the definition of
wealthy, is it the World
Banks classification
forHighNetWorthIndi-
viduals (HNWI) of
$1 million?
A friend of mine who
has had his fair expo-
sure towealthy individ-
uals believes that
wealth is a state of mind. This
seems to endorsemyperson-
al client experience where I
have been asked the ques-
tion do I have enough by
clients with very little to
those with fortunes, which they
will not spend in three lifetimes.
The answer to the question is cer-
tainly not an arbitrary number
based on a simple calculation, but
definitely something more.
Somay be the question is not do
I have enough but rather what
does money mean to me. Answer-
ing this question may unshackle
you from a lifetime of financial
slavery exploited by consumerism
and the need to keep up with the
Joneses. The person who earns
more thanhe spends and is content
with his life is wealthier than rich
man who feels poor and will never
ever be satisfied.

He said that under coach Jeremy
