    Group meets on

    Tuesday, April 24.

    See p. 5.

F irst, let me say that I have greatly missed my monthly interactions with all of you and all the assorted BGS activi-

    ties. I have been keeping

up with all of the activi-

    ties and processes that

    BGS is involved in from

afar. I am very pleased by

    the directions that I see

    the BGS Board moving

    toward. And, I am very

excited that I will be join-

ing you all this month at

    April’s General Member-

    ship meeting where I will

    be the presenter. You can

    read more about that

    here in the newsletter.

    The last several months

have been a crazy time for Rick and me.

We closed on the sale of our home in

Bend on October 3rd and left with the

largest U-Haul available the next day. We

drove directly to Tucson (3 days of slow

driving!) and put our belongings in stor-

age for what we thought would be a

month or so. Well, six months later, we

find most of our belongings are still in

storage awaiting construction of our new

    home.

We thought at first that we could just

    stay with family and

    friends throughout the

    southwest while waiting,

    and we would be building

    memories as a family.

    Well, that lasted four

    months. We are now liv-

    ing in an apartment just

    moments away from our

    new home that we have

    just received a closing

date... May 8th is the offi-

cial day!! We are very anx-

    ious. We know that we

    have made a positive

    change for our family to

be in Tucson. We have been able to see

our granddaughter Kylie about once a

week as she attends University of Arizona

Law School. It means a lot to me.

Needless to say, my genealogical research

has been in turmoil. The reason is proba-

bly obvious: It’s packed away. The computer is in what box? We

don’t have WiFi, now what? Where did I put my thumb drives? We

left the laptop in what city? The list could go on and on. It has given

me time to reflect on my genealogy research... and many of those

thoughts will be shared during my presentation. I have also had

some time to pay attention to online groups and what people are

doing and saying. I have been able to do some research on the

evolving best practices in genealogy. And, I’m making making plans

for when we are settled once again. I am so anxious to be “home”

and focus on my research and just living normally.

As I close my comments, I would like to give a shout out to many

of those that are critical to leading BGS into the future—The entire

BGS Board that has continued to work hard in my absence: Ann

Evensen, Sandy Thompson, Linda Beilby, Susan Agli, and Glen Rob-

erts. Many kudos to others who give countless hours to make BGS

an asset to the genealogical community in Bend: Eileen Krueger,

Maggy Wilcox, Lori Hill, George Larson, Gary Putnam, Cynthia

Stubenrauch, Gus Oberg, Barbara McGee, George Warren, Jennifer

Wegner, Charlie and Sally Brown, Patricia deWitt, and so many

more wonderful volunteers! Much gratitude to everyone!

I also welcome all of the new members. I’m looking forward to see-

ing old friends and making new ones! See you soon!

    Forming

    Help us start a DNA

    Interest Group after Marsha’s presenta-

tion on April 17. Bring a Brown Bag lunch,

if desired, and we’ll work together for

about 30-45 minutes on this task:

Make a list of all the beginner and ad-

vanced questions we have about DNA.

We will send the questions to Lisa

McCullough, who is our May meeting

speaker. Your questions will help guide

her regular program presentation for be-

ginners AND at the Brown Bag Interest

Group after the presentation, when she

    will address more DNA topics.

    Plan for 2 Brown Bags,

    1) after the April 17 meeting

and 2) after the May 15

    meeting to spend extra

    time learning from Lisa.

Have you taken a break from genealogy and are

trying to figure out how to get back into it?

Are you just beginning your genealogical research

and overwhelmed by all that’s available online?

Are you wondering what software or online programs

    will work best for you?

At the moment, Marsha is going through the same thing.

On April 17, she will offer her perspective on how to navi-

gate modern genealogy, both online and in the real

    world.

As always, Marsha will include audience participation in

    her presentation.

Come to hear her thoughts, share your ideas, learn a lot,

and enjoy a morning cup of coffee with your genealogy

    Stereograph Viewer

I have a stereograph viewer called the “Perfecscope,” which was manufactured by

Underwood & Underwood, patents—1895 & 1896. At one time (per Wikipedia),

Underwood & Underwood was the largest publisher of stereo cards in the world,

producing 10 million a year. I think it is great fun to look at old stereographs

from the 1800s to early 1900s.

I only have 10 cards to look at, including a couple of Underwood & Underwood cards, but I’ve just found a new

free resource to be able to make more: “The Oregon Historical Society Digital Collections,” which is available at:

https://digitalcollections.ohs.org/. Search for stereograph and there are 362 hits with images. Most were taken by

Carlton E. Watkins, who photographed many areas on the west coast in the 19th century.

This is a stereograph of Lower

    Multnomah Falls, picture taken in

1867 (no copyright any longer). All

I had to do is download the image,

print it the correct size, pop it in the

viewer, and see it in stereo.

There are thousands of other images

and documents in the digital collec-

    tions. Perhaps you’ll find something

    of interest to your family.

How Many of You Are There? Reprinted from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter, 13 June 2017

The following is for U.S. residents only: There are 325,060,629 people

in the U.S. How many have your name? To find out, go to: http://

HowManyOfMe.com/, and enter your own name. NOTE: Don’t worry,

the site’s Privacy Policy assures everyone the site doesn’t share your name or any other information about you.

Specifically, it states, “We do not share search data of individual users or e-mail addresses with anyone, nor do

we intend to start.” The site’s search will tell you how many people in the U.S. share your first name and also how

many share your last name, along with a bit of other information. It then tells you how many people have exactly

the same first name AND last name as you. I don’t see any serious genealogical uses for this web site, other than

perhaps determining how rare a name might be. Perhaps it could also be used as a tool when trying to find a

suitable name for the baby your family is expecting. Want a unique name?

The site is based on data in the 1990 and 2000 censuses. I searched for my maiden name. The site found 1,027,964

others with the first name, Sandra, and 376 others with the last name, Stromgren, but only 1 person with the

name, Sandra Stromgren. I wonder who she is?

The Bend Genealogical Society’s program year is from June 1 to May

    31. At the meeting on May 15th, we will elect Officers for the Board

of Directors to 1-year terms for the 2018–19 year.

The slate below is respectfully submitted by the current Board.

Nominations can also be made from the floor on May 15th.

    Position of President—Susan Agli

My interest in genealogy came from my love of history and research,

so I was excited to join BGS in 2017. I have learned so much and enjoy the company of like-minded people. I have

extensive experience as a mediator, and since 2007, I have been a full-time real estate broker. I believe the role of

BGS President is to respect our past achievements, adhere to what has been successful, and be open to new ideas

and technologies that support our mission. I’m looking forward to the upcoming year!

    Vice President—No Nominee

We do not have a nominee for Vice President. Are you interested?

    Secretary—Maggy Wilcox

I am a retired English teacher and have been a member of BGS since moving to Bend early in 2005. I was Secretary

a few years ago. I’ve worked on the Operations Manual Review Committee, have served as Parliamentarian for

three Presidents, and am on the mentoring team. I’m an ardent genealogist!

    Treasurer—Sandy Thompson

I have lived in Bend since 1982 and joined BGS in 2002 after attending a Beginner’s Class. I love researching family

history and enjoy sharing my adventures. I also love retirement now after a 46-year career as an accountant and

manager for private business, for government and for another nonprofit. I’m looking forward to continuing to

serve BGS as the Treasurer again in the coming year. Thank you to BGS for supporting passionate genealogists.

    * Director-At-Large #1—Linda Beilby (1-year term)

I retired from California State University, Sacramento in 2000 and then opened and ran a Bed & Breakfast in Ham-

ilton, MT, for about 10 years, before relocating to Bend on 4 July 2014. I’ve been working on my family history for

about 17 years and have several brick walls to show for my effort. My other interest is quilting. I’m looking forward

to continuing being a Director-At-Large for another year.

    Director-At-Large #2—Gary Putnam (2-year term)

I am a native, fifth-generation Oregonian, born in Astoria. I have spent my working life as a lawyer and business

executive in the financial and real estate fields, and have lived in Bend since 2011. I’ve been researching and writing

about my genealogy since 1961 and have completed nine books. My primary fields of research interest are New

England and New York, Ohio, Oregon, Greece, Mexico and Medieval European ancestry. I really enjoy mentoring

and am very interested in DNA research.

Glen Roberts will continue to serve on the Board as the Past President and provide his expertise.

    * Linda will be elected for one year, so the two Director-At-Large terms will not end at the same time. Eileen Krueger

was elected to the position, but when she resigned in November 2017, the Board appointed Linda to fill the position.

    Make A Mentoring Appointment

You can request an appointment for a date and time

when the Library is open that fits in your busy life. We

will do our best to accommodate your request.

    Mentoring is Available

    All Year, Including Summer

To help our mentors help you, submit a Mentoring Re-

quest Form to tell us about your question(s). Request

your preferred date/time on the form, which is on our

website, in the Library, or available at meetings.

On the website, the form is a computer-fillable PDF.

Attach it to an email and send to:

    George Larson, Mentoring Coordinator

    [email protected]

George will confirm your appointment via email.

Mentoring Location: Williamson Hall. Wi-Fi is

available. Bring your laptop, if desired.

    Consider volunteering to be a

    mentor, because the great part

    about helping someone work his/her

way up a difficult hill is finding

yourself closer to the top, too!
