Distance Learning Instructions Period 4 – Intro to Music Week 2 – April 13-17 th Letter from Shanker: First, thank you so much to those who were able to join me on Zoom in week 1 and help me trouble shoot all the technology. It was really hard to figure out if pages and documents were visible and functioning correctly by myself. By day 3, I think I got it all set. I appreciate your patience and your emails and texts when something wasn’t working. Without you, I would not know it needed fixing! We tried many different ways of getting to documents and turning in homework and I can see what is and isn’t working for the majority of you. I am including a section in this week’s instructions about where to find things and how to turn your work in for those that are still unclear. Please don’t panic if your work didn’t make it in on time. I understand! With this week’s instructions hopefully clarifying more info for you, I hope to see late work roll in Monday & Tuesday. Please also remember that you are now your own boss, motivational cheerleader, and procrastinating obstacle. Distance learning is so much more complicated for some of you. Set up a time to work and a time to have fun in your weekdays. Stick to it and get your work done early so the pressure is off at the end of the week. I understand how tough it is to live with a procrastination guy sitting on your shoulder telling you to do the fun stuff before the work. If I can conquer him, so can you! Zoom meetings will be announced using Remind and the email address you use to access the google drive files. Stay tuned for our next Q & A opportunity. You must put your First Name and Last Initial into Zoom so when you are seen in the waiting room, Shanker will recognize you and allow you in. Zoom meetings will be locked after the first ten minutes from the scheduled start time for security reasons. You will not be able to enter if you are 10+ minutes late. Homework is due on Mondays and will not start to be graded until that Monday. If you see in the Aeries gradebook an assignment has been marked “done grading” and you don’t have a grade, that is the time to email Shanker and make sure I found your file in the drive, email, etc. Until then, don’t expect confirmation emails. Don’t expect your grades to magically appear on Monday morning. It’s not realistic. You had a week to do your assignments. Shanker needs a week to grade them. Be kind to your teachers, and remember: Don’t Panic! (see Douglas Adams’ book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” – it is also a movie/mini-series. Your Turn In Folder on Google Drive: I have created a folder for each student in my google drive and titled them “P4 – Your Name”. Your folder is only viewable and editable by you and Mrs. Shanker. Distance Learning Instructions Period 4 – Intro to Music

Week 2 – April 13-17th Letter from Shanker:

First, thank you so much to those who were able to join me on Zoom in week 1 and help me trouble shoot all the technology.

Shanker. You will be able to upload files to this folder or create new word or spreadsheet documents to turn in assignments.

- To find the folder, you must log in to the google drive with the same address you use to access the learning tracks. If you are not sure which address you need to use or you are having trouble, please contact Mrs. Shanker via Remind text or email.

o It is best to use a Gmail address to access the google drive because your files are linked to your email account.

o Non-Gmail addresses will need to access the folders through a shared link that you will be emailed. It is too easy to lose track of that link. Perhaps bookmark the page once you access it?

Page 2: Distance Learning Instructions - Week 2 · Distance Learning Instructions Period 4 – Intro to Music Week 2 – April 13-17th ... please contact Mrs. Shanker via Remind text or email

- Once you are logged in, look at the left side of the screen (desktop version) and you will see “My Drive”. This is where the files you create or upload are stored.

- Underneath “My Drive” is “Shared with Me”. Click here to see files and folders that other people have created and shared with you. You should see your class folder “Intro to Music - Master Documents” and your new personal folder “P4 – Your Name”.

- Your personal turn in folder: o The best way to turn in assignments that are not already in a google form is to put

them in your “P4 – Your Name” folder. Any scans or pictures of your work or can be uploaded here instead of emailed.

o You may see that Mrs. Shanker has already pushed some of the files you sent via email into your folder.

o Now comes the organizational assignment: § I need you to make a folder inside your personal folder for your first week’s

work and title it “Week 1”. § Then drag and drop all your work from week 1 into that folder so it is not in the

way of week 2’s work. § While you are at it, go ahead and make another folder and title it “Week 2” so

you can prepare for this week. § Every week you will add another folder for that week’s assignments.

- Class Folder “Intro to Music – Master Documents”: o First, nothing in this folder can be edited, added to, modified, or deleted by a student.

These documents must remain “Read/See Only” so that everyone has access to the original clean file.

o While I am obligated to put all needed files into a pdf on the Heritage webpage, this is where you will find a second copy of the same pdf as well as smaller files in various formats which may allow you to more easily complete the assignments should you be unable to print worksheets.

§ For example: The Listening Log in the pdf packet can be downloaded to your computer and opened in Preview or Acrobat. Both these applications should allow you to add text on top of the page and fill it out digitally. Then you could save it to your turn in folder in the google drive.

§ If that isn’t working for you, there is also a spreadsheet version of the Listening Log in this folder. You cannot edit any document in the class folder, but you CAN “Make A Copy” by right clicking or control clicking on it. The google drive will automatically move the new copy into your “My Drive” section. Then you can right click and move it to your turn in folder.

• When trying to move a file, click left out of “My Drive” and you will then be able to click into “Shared with Me” section.

- There is a Google Drive app you can download onto smart phones to make it easier to upload recordings and pictures to your turn in personal folder. I highly recommend it.

o In my app on an apple device, there is a menu bar at the bottom of the screen. If you click on the two people, it will bring up the files that have been share to you from someone else. That’s the “Shared with Me” section.

Music Genres Worksheets & Listening Log Process:

- This week’s genres are #13 Cool Jazz and #14 Crooners. - Complete the reading and questions first.

o Go to the New Website: www.sites.google.com/view/hhschoir-vocalmusic o Type your answers into the google form on each genre’s page. This is the easiest way

to submit your answers to the worksheet. - Then look at the Listening Log Pages.

o The song title and opinion page is now available as a spread sheet which should make it easier to enter your responses.

o The check box pages are still a pdf but use Preview or Acrobat to type directly on the page. Preview will even check the boxes!

o Write your starting opinion of the genre before you hear the music. o Go to the new website https://sites.google.com/view/hhschoir-vocalmusic o Read about each song by clicking on the “Song #” expanding textbox, and then

listen/watch them. o As you listen, mark the check boxes of what applies to the music. o Write your opinion of each song after you hear it. Your opinion should include

information from the check boxes about what made it good or bad. § The following statements are not acceptable opinion answers:

• I liked it. • It was ok. • I hated it.

§ The following are great opinion answers: • I liked it because it used a soft piano and flute which made it sound like

a lullaby. • I hated it because the brass instruments were loud and angry sounding. • I thought the lyrics were really bizarre and I didn’t know what emotion I

was supposed to feel. • I thought the tempo was too fast. It made me feel anxious.

o Close with your overall opinion on the genre now that you have heard all the songs. o Upload your finished pages into your Week 2 folder in your turn in google drive folder

“P4 – Name”. Name your files appropriately. Turn In Check List:

- Create “Week 1” and “Week 2” folders within your turn in google drive folder “P4 – Name”. - Worksheet Questions #13 Cool Jazz – Answer in the google form on the new website. - Listening Log #13 Cool Jazz – PDF and spreadsheet versions of these forms are available in the

google drive “Intro to Music – Master Documents” folder. They can be filled out electronically by downloading them or making a copy and then uploading your finished forms to your turn in folder. Full Instructions can be found on the new website “Intro to Music” page.

- Worksheet Questions #14 Crooners – Answer in the google form on the new website. - Listening Log #14 Crooners – PDF and spreadsheet versions of these forms are available in the

google drive “Intro to Music – Master Documents” folder. They can be filled out electronically

101 Info”. - E-MAIL

o [email protected] o Always include your name first and last and which class you are in. It can be very

confusing when you use a nickname in your email and Mrs. Shanker can’t figure out who she is talking to.

www.sites.google.com/view/hhschoir-vocalmusic

1. Classically trained singers would use a dark sound with vibrato and embellishments to add to their

performance. Average recording pop singers (up to 1930) would sing with a bright sound and with

precision to the music notation with very little creative liberties taken. This type of singing was

called _____________________ singing.

2. Crooners were pop artists influenced by ___________________ music which allows for more

interpretation and embellishments by the singer/instrumentalist.

3. Crooners voices were usually ____________________ and had a __________________ quality.

4. Who established the Crooner style of singing as a popular one? ____________________________

5. Bing Crosby didn’t want to perform on television live in case he messed up or there were technical

difficulties. He started the trend of ____________________________________________________.

6. When the Crooner style became less popular due to the rise or Rock & Roll, the big names in the

Crooner style set up permanent shows in what two towns?

a. ____________________________________

b. ____________________________________

7. Who are two modern day Crooners?
