16-bit automotive MCU integrates high-voltage analogue functions

Freescale’s S12VR microcontroller can handle high-voltage signals and power supplies

FREESCALE

Freescale has released a newautomotive microcontroller thatincludes high-voltage analoguefunctions alongside digital logic on asingle chip.

The S12VR is intended for use in DC motorsfor automotive window lift and sunroofapplications connected to LIN networks.

The S12VR, a member of the MagniV mixed-signal MCU family, benefits from Freescale’sLL18UHV technology, which uses a low-leakage 0.18µm fabrication process to integrate40V analogue circuits, non-volatile memoryand digital logic on a single piece ofsilicon.

Traditionally, automotive electronicdesigns have required multipledevices: some created with a high-voltage process to connect to thebattery and power actuator outputs, alongside others designed on a low-voltage digital logic process. Thisposes a challenge when the endapplication has space limitations.

Using the S12VR, developers canconnect high-voltage signals andpower supplies directly to the MCU intheir automotive designs, helpingsave board space, increase system

quality and reduce build complexity. The S12VR MCU provides various analogue

functions required for relay-driven electricmotor control. These analogue componentsinclude an automotive voltage regulator, LINphysical layer, low-side drivers, high-side driversand inputs. The 12V devices are capable ofwithstanding the rigorous requirements of theautomotive environment, up to 40V, which canoccur during load dumps.

The S12 MagniV family uses the proven andwell-supported S12 16-bit MCU, enablingsoftware compatibility and tool re-use across abroad range of applications. The device isavailable as the S12VR64 with 64kbytes ofFlash memory, and the S12VR48 with48kbytes. Both variants are available either as48LQFP or 32LQFP packages.

Rotary position sensor supports high-speed BLDC motors

NXP SEMICONDUCTORS

NXP Semiconductors has introducedthe KMZ60, the industry’s firstmagneto-resistive angle sensor with anintegrated amplifier IC.

The sensor, which uses anisotropic magneto-resistive technology, supports high-performance brushless DC (BLDC) motorcommutation schemes. After calibration, it

offers angle measurements accurate to ±0.1°and a maximum phase error of 1.5° at a rotorspeed of 25,000rpm.

The KMZ60 consists of two chips, an anglesensor and an amplifier, in a single SO8package. It must be paired with a magnet witha field strength of at least 25kA/m andattached to the rotor. The KMZ60 producescosine and sine output signals related to theangle of the magnet’s field.

Since the KMZ60 includes an integratedamplifier, designers can avoid the cost of anexternal amplifier and thus benefit from lowersystem costs.

A pure analogue angle sensor, the KMZ60operates faster than competing digital systemsthat suffer from high latency arising from theiruse of complex algorithms. The accuracy andspeed of the KMZ60 are particularly useful insafety-critical applications such as steeringangle measurement and window wiper motors.

The magneto-resistive sensors operatereliably independent of magnet shifts and driftsdue to lifetime, temperature changes ormechanical stress. This enables accuratereadouts even in the most demandingenvironments, such as inside a motor.

The new TSZ12x series of high-precision operational amplifiers fromSTMicroelectronics offers very lowinput offset voltages withvirtually zero drift.

TSZ121 is the singleversion, TSZ122 the dualversion, and TSZ124 thequad version, in pin-outscompatible with industrystandards.

The high accuracy of these opamps is almost completelyunaffected by changes intemperature. The maximum offset voltage isjust 5µV at 25°C, and even over the fulloperating temperature range of -40°C to125°C, this figure is just 8µV. This stable

performance is due to the op amps’ chopper-stabilised architecture, which ensures that theamps constantly correct low-frequency errorsacross their inputs.

The TSZ12x parts also offer an excellentcombination of high speed and lowpower consumption: while gainbandwidth product is 400kHz,they draw less than 40µA at 5V.The devices also feature anultra-low input bias current.Together, these features makethe TSZ12x family ideal forlow-power applicationssuch as sensor interfaces, and portable and battery-

Waterproof connector canjoin 50A power cables

The EM-W connector from Hirose can be safely submerged in liquid

HIROSE

The new EM-W series from Hirose is ahigh-current, IP68 waterproof circularconnector with bayonet locking forthree-phase power supplies.

Hirose has introduced the EM-W range tomeet increased demand for power connectorsoffering high reliability in industrial applications. The range consists ofplugs and receptaclesthat have the capacity tohandle up to 50A.

The innovativeconnector designincorporates three 50Apower contacts and oneground contact. Thecontacts are arranged insequence to ensure theground contact isconnected before thepower contacts duringthe mating process.

A special spring in the receptacle connectsthe ground contact to the metal shell forreliable panel grounding. The EM-Wconnectors also feature a special protectivecover over the female contacts to minimise theexposure of the contact area and so reducethe risk of damage. Termination of the crimpcontact is quick and easy using standard JIScrimping tools.

Waterproof protection is guaranteed withspecial gaskets placed at each connectionpoint in the mated condition. The EM-W series

can safely withstand submergence in 1.8m ofwater for 48 hours in its mated condition.

The connector includes five polarising keysin the mating face to guarantee the correctmating position and to brace the connectorwhen subject to vibration. The special one-touch bayonet locking mechanism securelylocks the mated connectors quickly and easily. This works by turning the outer collar on theplug with a clockwise quarter-turn to mate theconnector, and a quarter-turn counter-clockwise to disconnect. Correct mating isconfirmed with an audible tactile click.

Compact method for connecting 1.5mm2 cabling

WAGO 713 series: for high-density wire-to-board connections

WAGO

WAGO is offering its 713 series, a Mini-HD Multi-connection System providinga compact two-row housing forconnecting up to 1.5mm2 cables.

The design of the two-row system provides forhigh-density wire-to-board connections inproducts using 1.5mm2 cables. WAGOestimates that OEMs can save as much as40% of the cabling space in front-panel I/Oconnections.

The 713 series connectors feature vibration-proof CAGE CLAMP® terminations forapplications that require robust connections.

The connectors are available withstraight or angled headers, and inversions with from 6 to 36 poles.

WAGO’s design for the 713series connectors makes mis-mating impossible, because theplug can only fit into the header inthe correct orientation. Inaddition, special coding on theside of the device protectsagainst the risk that the headermay be mounted incorrectly.

The female connectors have abracket for a strain-relief plate inthe middle, between the rows ofcontacts.

The contact pins in the femaleconnector are accommodated inindividual chambers. Thismeasure protects againstmechanical damage, for instanceduring manufacturing processes,

and is particularly valuable in equipmentexposed to harsh environments.

For plug connections subject to multiplemating cycles, a connector is available in the713 series that offers an unplugging aid and alocking option.

Two-colour LED switches candisplay two different legends

NKK switches: innovative overlay material responds to changes in colour

NKK SWITCHES

NKK Switches has released newswitches with an innovative opticaloverlay technology which means theycan display a legend that is differentdepending on whether the circuit isopen or closed.

The push-buttonswitches are available inseveral variants: the UB,KP01, KP02, NP01 andUB2 series. The variousparts offer a range ofmounting styles andbutton types.

All offer a dual-legendcapability, with a choiceof standard legendsincluding; On/Off,Start/Stop, Open/Close,Remote/Local andEco/Power. The switches are able to

Family of scalable spring fingersshares a single footprint

Spring fingers from TE: improved contact force and reliability

TE CONNECTIVITY

TE Connectivity (TE) has introduced afamily of scalable spring fingers inheights from 1.8mm to 3.4mm. All canbe mounted on a single footprint, enabling the designer to change theprofile of the design withoutreconfiguring the board layout.

Spring fingers (also knownas shield fingers, groundingsprings or universal groundcontacts) are used in almostevery small PCB to provide asingle-contact, surface-mountable internalconnector. A spring fingeroffers an electricalconnection and groundingfrom EMI noise and staticbetween a PCB and otherelectronic components, suchas a secondary PCB, shieldcam, antenna or speaker.

The scalable type from TE features a pre-loadfunction which nearly doubles the working areacompared to a common spring finger andincreases contact force by 0.2N. A scalablespring finger also has a dimple on the contact, which helps to improve contact force andreliability.

The tip of the finger bends backward toprevent it from hooking on any othercomponent. On the back of the scalablespring finger, there is a pick-and-place areathat makes the device compatible with

automatic assembly processes. The holes atthe bottom of the spring finger increasesoldering strength while reducing problemswith solder-wicking.

Besides scalable spring fingers, TE offers afamily of variable-footprint spring fingers in fourstyles and multiple sizes. Their effectiveheights range from 0.3mm to 6.5mm, withwidths ranging from 0.8mm to 2.5mm. Theyrequire very limited space on a PCB andaccommodate soldering as well as pick-and-place using standard equipment.

PTS840 series from C&K: rated for 100,000 switching cycles

C&K COMPONENTS

C&K Components has developeda new series of surface-mountside-actuated switches thatoffers long operating life whileoccupying a small footprint.

The tiny PTS840 series switch isavailable with front PIP leads that deliverstrong shear resistance and higherreliability than other technologies. Theparts are rated for a minimum of100,000 switching cycles.

The side-actuated switch measures aslim 3.5mm x 3.55mm with a travel pathof 0.2mm + 0.2mm/-0.1mm. Themomentary action of the PTS840 seriesswitch with G and front PIP-typeterminals can handle contact resistanceof less than 500mΩ and insulationresistance of more than 100mΩ.

C&K can embellish the switch itselfwith custom graphics, logos, texturesand finishes on surfaces that are

D E S I G N N O T E

Freescale i.MX 6 applications processors are one of the world’smost versatile platforms for smart embedded systems inmarkets including industrial, medical, automotive, and digitalsignage. A crucial decision for the embedded systemsdeveloper using the i.MX 6 is the choice of Operating System(OS). Board Support Packages (BSPs) for both Linux andWindows® Embedded Compact 7 are available. This DesignNote describes the reasons for choosing WindowsEmbedded Compact 7, and its BSP developed by Bsquare.

Questions about LinuxThere are three commonlycited reasons for choosingLinux over Windows, but allthree merit closerexamination – all is notnecessarily as it seems.

First, there is theperception that Linux is free. While it is true that open-source Linux does notrequire an up-front payment, the cost of licensing an OSis only a small part of thetotal cost of using and

supporting it. Deployment, management, security, and updates must also be considered inthe total cost of ownership. Windows EmbeddedCompact 7 can often provide a lower total costthan Linux because Windows is managed andupdated by one organisation, Microsoft, whichhas the resources and expertise to supportOEMs of all sizes.

For example, Microsoft covers WindowsEmbedded Compact 7 under a 10 year supportprogramme. By contrast, there is no single, source of support for open-source Linux. Inaddition, there is a smooth upgrade path fromWindows Embedded CE 6.0 to WindowsEmbedded Compact 7, so designers cancontinue to use legacy Windows Embeddedapplications on new hardware.

Linux is often touted for the strength of itscommunity, but the Microsoft Partner Network isone of the most well supported partnerorganisations in the technology industry, withhigh standards for participation and expertise.More than 700 partners worldwide are dedicatedto Windows Embedded, and there are more than700,000 partners in the Microsoft network.

And the support system is not just about Microsoft. Bsquare, thedeveloper of the Windows Embedded Compact 7 BSP included with theNovPED Product Evaluation Demo, is one of the world’s leadingproviders of smart, connected systems, drawing on extensiveexperience in every embedded technology market.

As a member of Freescale’s Wireless Developer Network, Bsquare hasaccess to a comprehensive catalogue of software, hardware, tools andservices to help OEMs create faster, smarter, more powerful devices thatuse Freescale’s broad portfolio of wireless products and platforms.

Plugging the security holesAnother argument commonly advanced in favour of Linux is that it ismore secure. However, as usage of Linux has become morewidespread, it has also become the target of an increasing number ofattacks. Any embedded system can be a target, particularly if there is afinancial reward for malefactors, which is the case in applications suchas point-of-sale systems.

Windows Embedded users can turn to Microsoft and a large communityof certified experts for help in addressing security challenges, andMicrosoft has one of the world’s largest teams of security expertsworking to address known and zero-day vulnerabilities on behalf of theircustomers. Linux users must rely on the goodwill of an unmanagedcommunity with skills and allegiances of which OEM developers cannotbe sure.

Windows Embedded Compact 7 is used in a wide variety of settingswith stringent security requirements ranging from defence equipment tomedical devices.

Open-source development on WindowsDevelopers of embedded systems frequently need the ability to modifylow-level code in order to optimise system performance and provide

innovative user experiences. It would seem that this is an argument infavour of Linux, for which 100% of the source code is available. However, Microsoft actually works closely with embedded systemsOEMs, and fully supports open source development projects. For themost part, only the components of Windows Embedded Compact 7 thatbenefit from industry-wide standardisation are closed-source.

By providing the vast majority of OS source code for WindowsEmbedded Compact 7, Microsoft gives OEMs the control they need forlow-level fine-tuning of their designs.

Faster time-to-marketFor OEMs that choose to develop using Windows Embedded, theWindows Embedded Compact 7 BSP for Freescale i.MX 6 on the NovPEDProduct Evaluation Demo offers faster time-to-market, reduced projectrisk and cost, and facilities for designing sophisticated user interfaces.

Windows Embedded Compact 7 provides an architecture similar tothat of desktop Windows products, so OEMs can draw on theirknowledge of Windows development practices and tools. For example, writing a network driver on Windows Embedded Compact 7 is verysimilar to writing one for Windows.

OEMs opting to use Windows Embedded Compact 7 can also usethe Visual Studio integrated development environment to develop boththe operating system image and applications. They can write in C/C++native or managed code using the .NET Compact 7 Framework. WindowsEmbedded Compact 7 includes a Visual Studio plug-in that makes iteasy to select and configure only the operating system componentsrequired for the device, reducing the size of the OS memory footprint.

Also, the Windows Embedded Compact 7 BSP provides completesupport for Freescale i.MX 6 system-on-chip components including:• i.MX 6 multi-core processor• Up to 3GB of RAM• RS232 serial interface• 10baseT and 100baseT Ethernet• USB Host• SD memory card support

Reduced risk and costThe Windows Embedded Compact 7 BSP from Bsquare provides OEMswith a reliable, market-tested starting point for customisation thatreduces project cost and risk. Additionally, Microsoft indemnifiescustomers against patent claims on OS components. This is not thecase with Linux. Some OEMs using Linux have had to defendthemselves in court or pay unexpected licence fees to patent holders.

With the explosive growth in patent litigation over the past severalyears, this has become a significant risk – one that is eliminated whenusing Windows Embedded Compact 7. With Microsoft products, customers know they are dealing with an organisation that is trusted byenterprises worldwide. In addition, qualified developers for Windows-based OSs are normally much easier to find than Linux developers.

The Windows Embedded Compact 7 BSP from Bsquare is designedto help OEMs deliver next-generation embedded device experiences. Itincludes built-in support for touch-screen displays. The user interfacecan be written using the simple and familiar WinForms approach or, for acustomised and modern look and feel, by using XAML. With support forWVGA LCD screens up to 800 x 480 in size, OEMs can offer customersmore precise interactivity and make the most of their graphics interface.

In conclusion, i.MX 6 processor users can benefit from the WindowsEmbedded Compact 7 BSP to get to market faster, reduce cost, andmanage risk whileproviding users withthe fast, engagingexperiences that leadto high customersatisfaction.

In applications in which safety might be compromised, such as when auser must find a knob or push a specific button, a user can operate amachine through gestures in a wide active field where gross movementscan replace fine movements for a simple and more intuitive interface withthe machine.

But how can gesture control be implemented? This Design Notedescribes a reference design, developed by Vishay, which may provide ablueprint for a wide range of end-product implementations.

The foundation of Vishay’s Gesture Control Sensor Board is theVCNL4020 proximity and ambient-light sensor. Two of Vishay’sVSMF2890RGX01 IR diodes are mounted on either side of the sensor,as shown in Figure 2. They are mounted on the reverse side of the PCBfrom the VCNL4020 sensor to keep to a minimum the cross-talkbetween the diodes and the sensor. The emitters’ high typical radiantintensity of 80mW/sr at 200mA allows for the detection of hand gesturesat up to 25cm above the sensor board.

VISHAY

Implementing gesture control: a single proximity sensor

Fig. 1: Vishay’s gesture-control system consists of just two IR LEDs and a single proximity sensor

Fig. 2: The Vishay Gesture Control Sensor Board, showing the proximity sensor and LEDs mounted oneither side of the board

Fig. 3: The two emitters are switched almost simultaneously

Principle of operationThe detection of gestures is accomplished by comparing the IR signalcoming from each of the emitters. The emitted IR light is reflected froman object, for example a hand, and then detected by the VCNL4020proximity sensor. In order to differentiate between the signals comingfrom either emitter, the emitters are multiplexed.

The proximity signal is then read out between each pulse via an I2Cbus interface. When a hand is in proximity to the board, it will reflectmore light from the emitter it is directly located over. If a hand is movedacross the board, the reflected-light signal from one emitter will increasebefore the signal associated with the other emitter.

This time difference of signal strength is analysed to determinewhether a swipe was made and in which direction.

The detection of a gesture calls for two main processes: • the acquisition and preparation of the raw data to be analysed • the interpretation of this raw data by the detection algorithm.

If a gesture is recognised, a corresponding event is triggered.

Data acquisitionThe data used for gesture recognition are acquired in separate datastreams, one per emitter. As the emitters are multiplexed, so only oneemitter should be on at a time, the measurements are staggered. Onemeasurement cycle consists of a set of data from each channel.

There are many advantages to using gesture control in placeof capacitive touch-sensing control or more traditionalcontrol devices such as buttons or knobs. When wearinggloves, capacitive touch panels will not work, but infra-redgesture control will. While both sensing technologies work intwo dimensions (x and y), gesture control adds a thirddimension: users can move their hand towards and awayfrom the sensor to execute control.

Page 17: Displays - my-boardclub.comFXAS21000, a small, low-power, 3-axis angular rate gyroscope for measuring yaw, pitch, and roll. The full-scale range is adjustable from 0.2°/s to 1600°/s

The measurements are done in quick succession so that the timerequired to complete a full measurement cycle is much greater than thetime between the individual proximity measurements of each emitter, asshown in Figure 3. This means that the system can compare the twoemitter signals almost in real time.

If the jumps between measurements are too erratic, for example if thesensor is in a noisy environment, several measurements per emitter andper measurement cycle can be made and then averaged. This will slowdown the measurement speed, but it will result in a cleaner signal. Thisvariable can be adjusted in the demo software provided with the board.

To be able to analyse and compare the data streams of each emitterchannel with one another, the data of each stream are split into framesof ‘n’ measurements. Each frame contains the most recent nmeasurements, with each iteration of the measurement cycle moving thesample one frame on. The recognition algorithm analyses each frame, and once a frame is seen to contain a gesture, the next few frames areignored, in order to avoid detecting the same gesture twice.

Furthermore, by ignoring several frames after a valid gesture has beendetected, it is possible to reduce false positives from hand movementsin the sensor’s field of view that were not intended as a gesture. Thisvariable can be adjusted in the demo software.

Each frame of the acquired signal is analysed for two parameters: thestandard deviation of each signal and the time delay between signals. Bycomparing the results of this analysis to user-defined thresholds, thealgorithm can tell whether a gesture was made, and which kind ofgesture it was.

The standard deviation is a measure of the spread of the data withinthe frame being analysed. It is calculated using the following formula:

Where x = the mean of the current frame and n = the number of samples being analysed

A low standard deviation implies there is no change in the signal andthere is either no hand in the sensor’s detection area or the hand is heldsteady over the sensor and no swipe or push gesture is being made. Ahigh standard deviation implies a large change in the signal, suggestingthe movement of a hand across or towards the sensor.

The detection algorithm only analyses the frame for more parametersif the signal is above a set standard-deviation threshold.

The presence of a sufficient time delaybetween the signals signifies that a swipegesture has been made. In the detectionalgorithm implemented in the demo kit, thetime delay is found by measuring the cross-correlation between the two signals.

The cross-correlation effectively shifts one ofthe signals over the other and computes thepercentage overlay of their integrals. By takingnote of the point of maximum cross-correlationbetween the signals, an estimation of the timedelay between the two signals can be made.

Both a time-delay threshold and thestandard-deviation threshold can be adjustedin the demo software, enabling the designer totest and fine-tune them for any givenapplication.

Setting the thresholdsThe standard deviation is a measure of the spread of the data withineach frame. The movement of the hand over the gesture board willincrease the standard deviation of both signals. The detection algorithmwill only scan the frames for a time delay between the signals if thestandard deviation exceeds a threshold. This threshold should be sethigher than any observed signal noise. The further away from the sensora gesture is performed, the smaller the change in standard deviation, asfewer counts are detected.

The gesture detection range increases with a lower standard deviationthreshold, as a smaller change in the signal is required to exceed thethreshold.

The time-delay threshold determines the minimum time delay thatneeds to be detected by the gesture algorithm for it to execute agesture event, and determine if it was a negative, left swipe, or positive, right swipe, delay, as shown in Figure 4. The detectable time differencewill depend on the measurement rate. With a lower measurement rate, higher delay time, the measurement time resolution decreases and sothe time-delay threshold must be decreased.

The width of the object used to perform the gesture should also betaken into consideration. A thinner object will lead to a higher detectedtime delay between signals, whereas a wider object will lead to a lowerdetected time delay.

A proven blueprint for gesture controlThe implementation described here is both sensitive and robust, andprovides for the design of a reliable gesture-control system with the useof components from Vishay that are readily available from FutureElectronics.

For passive LCD displays in industrial and home automationequipment, capacitive touch sensing is the best way toprovide buttons for user input. It is cheaper, more reliable, and provides a better user experience than an array ofmechanical buttons.

In harsh industrial environments, atouch-sensing display can alsoprovide a sealed user interfacewhich eliminates the risk ofproblems with mechanical wear orcorrosive fluids.

Such a system can beimplemented successfully with acombination of touch technologyand an LCD driver from NXPSemiconductors, a solution that willcompensate for any interferencebetween the LCD signal and thecapacitive sensor measurement.

In addition, moisture on the user’s finger or on the surface of the displayis another common source of interference in measurements ofcapacitance. Such interference may be eliminated by continuous auto-calibration and ultra-fast recovery, both features of NXP’s capacitivetouch-sensing devices.

Choice of touch display architecturesNXP’s technology supports three different touch-display architectures: • Add-on touch, in which the touch layer is added on top of the

conventional display, as shown in Figure 1a• On-cell touch, in which the touch layer is positioned between the LCD

glass and the polariser, as shown in Figure 1b• In-cell touch, in which the touch layer is combined with the LCD

electrodes into a single layer, as shown in Figure 1c

The demonstration systems shown were developed by NXP to helpdesigners evaluate the performance of devices such as the PCF8885 8-channel capacitive sensor in touch-display applications.

Add-on touch displayAny display can be upgraded with a capacitive touch panel made ofglass or foil to replace mechanical buttons. This implementation providesa quick solution for both active and passive displays. For standarddisplay sizes, off-the-shelf touch panels can offer a dense touch matrix.

The disadvantage is that add-on touch panels might be as expensiveas the display itself.

On-cell touch displayIn this implementation, the touch pads are sandwiched between the toppolariser and the display glass. The whole top side of the display glass isavailable for touch pads and routing. Sensor channels can bemultiplexed in systems that need to support advanced functions.

Although this approach is cheaper than the add-on touch glass, it stillrequires an additional step in the display production process, and thereis necessarily a cost arising from this step.

In-cell touch displayIn this implementation, the touch pads are on the same layer as thedisplay segments. The touch pads surround the segment electrodes;both pads and segments are made of the same Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)layer, using the same process step. This means that the touchfunctionality is integrated into thedisplay at no additional cost.

On the other hand, since thetouch and segment pattern are onthe same layer, there will be someconstraints on routing, and so thenumber of touch keys will be limited.

Better touch-sensing componentsNXP offers a wide variety of LCD drivers and capacitive touch sensorsfor touch displays. Uniquely, NXP’s capacitive touch sensors provide apatented auto-calibration mechanism that eliminates interference betweenthe display and the touch-sensing system. It also gives the systemextremely high immunity against changes in temperature and humidity.

The demonstration systems shown in the Figure 1 diagrams wereimplemented using the PCF8885. For applications requiring only one ortwo touch keys, the PCF8883/PCA8886 single-/dual-channel touchsensors may be used.

In addition, the new PCA8538 from NXP is a fully featured Chip-On-Glass (CoG) LCD driver, designed for high-contrast vertical-alignmentLCDs with multiplex rates up to 1:9.

HMI, Touch and DisplaysWhat’s the best way for a user to interact with a machine? Forsome years, Apple, with its innovative touch screens, was thecompany with all the smart answers. As this Application Spotlight shows, however, the industrial

electronics world is now experimenting with new Human-MachineInterface (HMI) implementations that go beyondthe tried-and-tested finger input on a displayscreen. Gesture control is particularly interesting to

industry because it can be performed by a userwearing gloves, and in harsh or wetenvironments, without touching the display. Onequestion for equipment OEMs to answer, however, is over safety: how reliably will thesystem recognise the user’s gesture? On page 20 is a component from Melexis that

will help to allay fears over gesture control.Providing a bridge between discrete LEDs andphotodiodes on one side and a microcontroller on the other, thegesture-controller IC includes algorithms that filter sunlight andother sources of ambient light to ensure that the system onlymeasures light reflected back from the user’s hand. For simplecontrol gestures, such as left/right or up/down swipes, this is avalid technology today.

A different implementation, by Vishay, is described in the DesignNote on pages 16 and 17. Displays that can orient themselves are also moving beyond

consumer electronics into other market sectors. Here, MEMStechnology has proved to be the best for the gyroscopes and

accelerometers that sophisticated HMIs require, since it enables the production of small androbust devices. The latest gyroscope fromSTMicroelectronics, the L3GD20H featured onpage 22, is even more accurate, precise andquick than its predecessor.Application-oriented components such as these

are important to designers of HMIs, but perhapsthe strongest reason for the growing sophisticationof graphical interfaces is the availability of highprocessing power at extraordinarily low prices.ARM®, with its Cortex™-M series of processorcores, has enabled microcontroller manufacturers

to introduce fast 32-bit devices at price levels that would onlyhave bought an 8-bit MCU three years ago. A prime example is the new STM32F4x9 series from ST,

featured below, which offers stunning media and graphicscapabilities, while retaining sufficient processing horsepower tosupport many other system functions as well.

ARM Cortex-M4 MCUs provide forrich graphical interfaces

The ARM Cortex-M4core with floatingpoint unit in theSTM32F4x9MCUs runs at180MHz, providing225DMIPS ofprocessor throughput, and is supplemented byST’s Adaptive Real Time(ART) Accelerator, whichperforms instantaneousexecution of instructions from Flash memory.

This high-speed capability is particularlyuseful in media-rich user interfaces. Forinstance, the devices’ new LCD-TFT controllerinterface with dual-layer support takesadvantage of the Chrom-ART graphicsaccelerator to perform content creation twiceas fast as the core could on its own.

As well as raw data copy, additional functionssupported by the Chrom-ART Acceleratorinclude image format conversion and imageblending. This accelerator not only improvesgraphics performance, it also saves theprocessing bandwidth of the main ARM corefor other, non-graphics functions.

Despite the high raw performance of the 32-bit STM32F4x9 MCUs, power consumptionis moderate. In Run mode, and executing from

Flash memory, the current requirement canbe as low as 260µA/MHz. In the power-

saving Stop mode, the devices typicallydraw just 100µA, which is three

times lower than some otherSTM32F4 parts. Audio is well provided for as wellas video in the STM32F4x9: theparts feature a dedicated audio

PLL, two full-duplex I²S channelsand a new serial audio interface.

A flexible memory controller in theMCUs supports Compact Flash, SRAM,

PSRAM, NOR, NAND and SDRAM memories. The STM32F439 also integrates a

cryptographic/hash processor providinghardware acceleration for AES-128, -192 and-256 cryptography, and supports the GCMand CCM, Triple DES, and hash (MD5, SHA-1,and now SHA-2) security protocols.

The STM32F429 and STM32F439 fromSTMicroelectronics are ARM® Cortex™-M4microcontrollers which provide amplesupport for sophisticated userinterfaces in medical, industrialand consumerapplications.
