Reflecting on Sunday’s Readings

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – July 11-12, 2020

Introduction: Perhaps you have heard of the man who wanted to check out his wife’s hearing. He got about ten feet

behind her and whispered, “Margaret, can you hear me?” When he received no response, he moved closer, to within

six feet of her and raised his voice to a normal tone, “Margaret, can you hear me?” Having still heard no response,

he stood directly behind her chair, and raising his voice, loudly said, “Margaret, can you hear me?” Finally, in frus-

tration his wife turned around and said, “My goodness, for the third time, yes!!”

Like the story above, sometimes things are not as they seem. Many times, when a person comes to faith later in life

there is a bit of frustration and even resentment toward the Church. Often the lament is, “I never heard the gospel

preached.” The blame for their belated response to God is laid at the door of the Church, and at the feet of the priests

and religious they had known in their school and at their parish. In some cases, it may be true that the Gospel was

not made as clear as it could have been, but most often it is not a case of the Gospel having never been preached, but

of the person having never heard. As a matter of fact, the Mass is in fact a recounting of the Gospel, as the life, death

and resurrection of Christ is made present to us again. And though we would love to be able to ensure that the Word

is heard and received by everyone present, we cannot, for hearing is a function of one’s heart and not just one’s ears.

“A missionary was translating the Bible in Songhai. Unable to find a word for ‘to believe’ he asked a native to trans-

late it. The native thought for a second and said, ‘It means to hear with the heart.’”1 In our country the Gospel is

available through many channels; churches, radio, television, print, the internet, and by individuals. Though we do

hear the Good News audibly with our ears, it is only when we hear inwardly with the ears of our heart that God’s

Word takes root and accomplishes his purpose.

The parable of the sower, the seed, and the four types of soil speaks of the receptivity of our hearts to the Living

Word and his revealed teachings, and of the many things which can hinder our continuing receptivity to its message.

There are times when we leave Mass, or some other occasion where the Kingdom of Christ was proclaimed, and we

are filled with enthusiasm regarding the truths we heard. Then frequently the dissonance of life, the noise of people,

activities, and the clamor of radio, music, television, the internet, etc., steal the words of the Kingdom from our con-

sciousness before they have a chance to take root. How often have we left Mass not able to recall a single thought

from the Scripture readings or the homily?

A mind that does not exert effort to meditate and chew over the truths of Christ will find that spiritual malnourish-

ment will set in because the seed of the Word has been devoured by the noise of life, preventing the seed from ger-

minating and taking root. Receptivity is not simply a function of the circumstances and conditions that surround us,

but rather reflects our willingness to stop in the midst of our circumstances and listen with the ears of our heart. Of-

ten, we cannot change our circumstances, but we can always change our response to God amidst our circumstances.

Each year as we see people participate in the Rite of Acceptance as they journey to become Catholics, we observe

the cross signed on their head, and eyes, and ears, and heart, etc. With the signing comes a prayer of blessing that

God would enable them to spiritually understand, see , hear, and receive Christ and his teachings. This should be a

reminder to us that we too need God’s help to be soil that is receptive to his life in us. If we do not hear, it is proba-

bly because we are not listening.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Bishop Daly has declared a Eucharistic Year throughout the Diocese of Spokane, which will conclude with the celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi in June 2021. This great year will be marked with votive Masses, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and special devotions in parishes throughout the diocese. Let us give thanks for the gift of the Most Holy Eu-charist! In observance of the Eucharistic Year we are instituting WEEKLY Adoration of the Blessed Sacra-ment to take place each Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. As such, we are in need of some volunteers to spend an hour in prayer in the pres-ence of the Blessed Sacrament. If you are willing to take an hour or two each month please call the parish office to sign up. Thank you! Adoration will conclude each week with Benediction begin-ning at 5:00 PM.

Reconciliation Since Father Tom has two Masses to say on Saturdays (one

here and one in Deer Park) he is unable to hear confessions as well. Reconciliation is available on Wednesday mornings right after the Daily Mass which begins at 8:30 AM. You can also call Father Tom to set up an appointment for

Reconciliation if the Wednesday time won’t work for you.

Parish Photo Directory When the coronavirus shutdown happened in March we were almost ready to publish our new photo direc-tory. Many parish families did their photo ses-sions in February. Since we have had such a long delay due to the shutdown we are adding a make-up day for pictures before we send the directory to print. However, we only have appointment slots for 28 families so don’t hesitate to schedule a session if we missed you last time. There is no charge for the sitting and you will receive one free 8 x 10 photo. Of course, additional photos will be available for sale. A photo directory makes it so easy to identify people you see at Mass each week but have always wondered who they are!!

Wednesday, August 26th - 2 PM to 9 PM The whole process takes about 40 minutes from the time you check in until you are out the door. Family pets are welcome to be included in your family photo. Please call Jeannie in the parish office at 509-466-4991 to schedule your appointment. Thank you!!
