Bishop John F. Doerfler

WEEKLY WEEKEND MASS ATTENDANCE COUNTS Bishop John has requested that all parishes submit a total weekly weekend Mass Attendance count (for all Vigil and Sunday Masses combined) each week, beginning the first weekend of July, 2017. The weekly Mass Attendance counts will give us a baseline for our Mass attendance as we work together to increase Mass attendance through evangelization efforts discussed in Bishop John’s Pastoral Letter on Evangelization, entitled: “Transforming Fire: A New Pentecost to form Spirit-Filled Evangelizers”. The pastoral letter is due to be released on Pentecost. An email reminder will be sent to the pastors, secretaries and bookkeepers prior to the start of the weekly Mass attendance count requirements, which will include a link to the online form that will be used to collect the data. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of the Bishop at (906)-227-9115. DONATING CANDLE WAX Lakestate Industries employs developmentally challenged individuals in the Marquette area. They use wax from discarded candle ends to make fire starters. If you have candle ends that you would like to contribute, you may drop them at St. Louis the King in Harvey, St. Michael’s in Marquette or at the Diocesan Office (Attn: MaryAnn). Lakestate

RETREAT AT MARYGROVE An exciting opportunity has arisen to serve the needs of your parish. Cathryn Torgerson holds a Masters Degree in Theology from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, has worked for many years in parish ministry, focusing on evangelization and catechesis with adults and teens. She has a deep interest in making Sacred Scripture accessible and has worked with the Catholic Biblical School of Michigan, taught at Sacred Heart, as well as parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Diocese of Lansing. She will be presenting a series of talks on the Goodness of God, using lessons from Scripture culminating in our ultimate destiny at the Wedding Banquet of the Lamb. This retreat will be open to all parish workers, Faith Formation Coordinators – catechists, youth group leaders, RCIA team members, paid or volunteer, clergy or lay – all will benefit from Cathy’s infectious joy and brilliant insights into the Story of Faith. There will be time for group discussion, as well as liturgical and private prayer, along with opportunities for the Sacrament of Penance. The retreat will begin on Sunday evening, June 25, with registration at 7:00 p.m. and an introductory conference and 8:00 p.m., followed by night prayer. The first substantial conference will be on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. The retreat will wrap up with lunch at noon on Thursday, June 29. The cost of the week retreat is $185. To encourage folks to sign up for this first-ever event, we’d like to offer a special: if the parish is willing to pay at least $50 per registrant, Marygrove will reduce the cost of the retreat by $35. So, if the parish pays $50, the retreatant will pay $100. If the parish pays $75, the retreatant will pay $75. If the parish pays $150, the retreatant will not be charged.

BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS MARQUETTE DIOCESAN PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT COLLECTION – May 13/14TH, 2017 THE WEEK OF THE COLLECTION Retired priests of the Diocese of Marquette receive health insurance benefits, automobile insurance and a monthly pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund. Diocesan priests live independently during their retirement, and they use their pension for basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation. Parishes are assessed an annual amount per priest serving at the parish. These assessments, plus other growth in the St. Joseph Association, have fallen short of what is needed to provide necessary benefits to our priests. With a large number of priests nearing retirement, and skyrocketing costs for medical services, prescription drugs, long-term care and gaps in Medicare coverage, there is a pressing need to provide necessary benefits to our priests. All parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette will participate in a special collection the weekend of May 14th to help bridge the gap. It is essential that we ensure adequate retirement and health coverage in the years ahead for our priests. Please return your collection envelope during next weekends’ Masses. THE WEEK AFTER THE COLLECTION Last weekend, our parish and all parishes and missions throughout our diocese took up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund, called the St. Joseph Association. The St. Joseph Association, pays the monthly pension, health and auto insurance for retired priests of the diocese. Thank you for your support of our retired priests.

WORLD CHURCH COMBINED COLLECTION – JUNE 10/11TH, 2017 All parishes in the Diocese of Marquette will be taking up the 2017 “World Church Collection” on the weekend of June 10/11th, 2017. This new collection combines three previously separate collections into one and supports the following outreach ministries to the Universal Church: CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES OVERSEAS FUND Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. Funds will help six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support to struggling communities and to work toward peace

and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. HOLY LAND & NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS COLLECTION The political, religious, and military challengers in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest, and instability have been especially hard on Christians. The Holy Land Collection offers hope to the Holy Land Christians in these times of hardship. The National Communications collection helps connect people to Christ, here and around the world, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. A portion of the funds collected will remain here in the Diocese of Marquette to support our local efforts. Peter’s Pence Collection (Collection for the Holy Father) The Peter’s Pence Collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to requests to aid the neediest throughout the world—those who suffer as a result of war, oppression, and natural disasters. It likewise provides the faithful with a tangible opportunity to not only empower the weak, defenseless, and voiceless, but also sustain those who suffer.

BULLETIN INSERTS Bulletin Insert #1 For weekend of April 29/30 The Diocese of Marquette is blessed with many senior (retired) priests (those who are no longer assigned to a parish). These men make present Christ, the Good Shepherd, and continue to give of themselves in countless ways of service for which we are grateful. As is the case with many pension plans in today’s world, our priests’ retirement program is not fully funded. On Good Shepherd Sunday, May 13/14, our diocese will take up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement and help remedy the shortfall in the St. Joseph Association. I hope you will consider using the envelope provided in your packets. Bulletin Insert #2 For weekend of May 6/7 Retired priests of the Diocese of Marquette receive health and automobile insurance and a monthly pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund. Diocesan priests live independently during their retirement, and they use their pension for basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation. Parish assessments, plus growth in the St. Joseph Association, have fallen short of what is needed to provide necessary benefits to our retired priests. All parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette will participate in a special collection on May 13/14 to help “bridge the gap.” It is essential that we ensure adequate retirement and health coverage in the years ahead for our priests. Please return your collection envelope during next weekends’ Masses. Bulletin Insert #3 For collection weekend May 13/14 This weekend all parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette are holding a Good Shepherd Sunday special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund, called the St. Joseph Association. This collection directly benefits priests of the Diocese of Marquette and is completely separate from the annual December collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, which supports retired clergy and sisters of religious orders across America. Please prayerfully reflect on how you can best help support our own priests’ retirement and return your envelope in the collection or drop it off at the parish. Bulletin Insert #4 Two weeks following collection weekend May 27/28 Last weekend, our parish and all parishes and missions throughout our diocese took up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund, called the St. Joseph Association. Collectively, our parishioners have raised $_AMOUNT_ to date. We truly appreciate your support. If you were unable to use your envelope last weekend, you may still do so.
