We are so grateful to all of you who give us your unneeded items so we can give them to our families. Unfortunately, this cost us a lot of money: cost and upkeep on the van; gas; cost of storage unit; compensation to the Run The Race couple who pick up and deliver.

Thus, we will pick up as many donations as we can on a to be determined (TBD) weekend in October, bring them to the Center and have a Give-Away day for our families. This will include clothes. The only clothes we will take throughout the year are children’s and teens’ clothes.

We hope you will be able to join us in Running the Race to continue to serve our most vulnerable inner-city children, who are struggling with all phases of poverty. We need your help financially. We need to train our older Racers so that they can work somewhere. We need to keep our GED Practice Center going. We need to insure that our preschool stays open so that we can help the children avoid the struggles our older Racers have.

RUN THE RACE CLUB

No nursing home for us. We'll be checking into a Holiday Inn! With the average cost for nursing home care costing $188 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble. I've already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it's $59 per night. Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon.

For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up.

It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today. And you're not stuck in one place forever -- you can move from inn to inn, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii? They have an inn there too. TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem. They fix everything, and apologize for the inconvenience.

Each inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks to see if you are ok. If not, they'll call an ambulance . . . or the undertaker. If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.

That leaves $129 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. $5 worth of tips a day will have the entire staff scrambling to help you. They treat you like a customer, not a patient. There's a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride free. The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp).

ED(UCATION) CHOICE SCHOLARSHIPS This is the program that allows children in failing public schools to get a “voucher” that helps pay for the tuition at a private school. This is probably the single most effective way to help children out of poverty.

After years of explaining the program and getting rejected by parents, last school year we were able to convince and encourage 10 elementary Racers and 6 high school Racers to attend private schools (they were at St. Mary Magdalene and Bishop Ready). The opportunity to apply for this school year recently passed. Those accepted should be receiving information.

If you can volunteer time to help us educate parents on this excellent opportunity, please call Rachel at 614-276-2171.

Once your child has been accepted by the private school, the school will have you complete a Scholarship Request Form, along with visible proof of your current address and child's birth (certificate), shown to the school.

Students currently receiving an EdChoice scholarship who asked to renew it for the 2016-2017 school year must remember to: • Take all required state achievement tests for their grade level; • Do not have more than 20 unexcused absences for the school year; and • Do not move out of the school district in which they became eligible.
