1) What is the best part about being a three sport athlete? Also what kind of challenges do you face being a three sport athlete?I would have to say that the best part of being a three sport athlete is simply being able to not only partici-pate in three different sports at the collegiate level but to actually have an impact on the team on and off the court/field/track. I also think it’s pretty cool to say that I have close to 200 teammates, which many people can’t say. There are also many opportunities to travel as a result of being on three different sporting teams. A challenge that it brings is that I have to be really good at balancing time between school, sports, and a social life. I sometimes may not have time to go and have fun with friends so one of my ways of hanging out with them is inviting them to workout with me so that I can “kill two birds with one stone”.

2) How long have you been playing each of the sports? What is your favorite part of playing each sport?Basketball and football I have played since I was around the age of seven. I didn’t start track until col-lege but the track coach at my high school asked me every single year to participate but I said no. Once I got to college I decided to give it a shot and ended up lik-ing it a lot.

3) When you came to CUW did you plan on playing three sports or did you come here for one or two specific sports and the decided to do the others?Originally I was recruited for both football and basket-ball so I came to CUW planning on playing two sports. During my freshman football season I talked to one of the football coaches about me joining track and he thought it was a good idea to help with my speed and athleticism, so I went through with it.

4) Does it ever take a toll on you being a three sport athlete, do you wish sometimes you only did one or two sports, or do the benefits of playing each sport make it worth it?Playing three sports definitely takes a toll on my body since I don’t take a break during the football to basket-ball transition. Being someone that gets a lot of reps in football games I go into basketball season a little dinged up but I am able to play through it. At some

points during the basketball season I can feel my body starting to “burn out” , and at that point is when I start to make sure I’m getting enough sleep/rest and trying to make sure I’m getting proper nutrition (it’s hard to stay away from cookies & ice cream). Track coaches give me a break after the basketball season ends so that my body can have at least a little recovery time be-fore going into another sport season. I am completely fine with playing three sports because I enjoy it all and I think it’s all worth it because of the experiences that I have with each team and the friendships that I have built in the process.

5) What events do you participate in during the track and field season? My freshman year of track and field I did high jump and long jump. The last two years I only did long jump but this year I plan on picking up one or two more events depending on what the coaches think is best for me and the team.

6) How does playing one sport help you prepare for the others? With doing three sports I stay in decent shape and usually the lifting that I do carries over into each sport. As a defensive back I need to have strength, speed, ex-plosiveness, good lateral movement, flexible hips, etc. which carries over into my responsibilities as a guard on the basketball court, and as a long jumper in track & field.

7) Is it a challenge to adjust to another sport once one sport is completed? The biggest challenge for me is going straight from football into basketball. The main reason is because of the difference in the amount of contact that is allowed. I usually run full speed into people a couple times and I pretty much play football on the basketball court so to speak. It takes me a little time to get into basket-ball mode and not tackling players when closing out on a shooter or going for a loose ball. Another chal-lenge that I face is the tempo of our basketball team. In football it’s maybe 20-30 yards every two or so min-utes and with basketball there is much more back and forth action so I’m usually winded after playing for two minutes.
