One of the most enjoyable experiences I have had this last year has been participating in a new program we launched in the Foundation, called Earn Your Scrubs. As I was meeting with donors throughout this last year, one comment that resonated with me was the desire of donors to see what their monetary support was doing at their hospital. From this vision, Earn your Scrubs at CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson was launched. Earn your Scrubs is a half day tour that provides participants with an opportunity to walk in the shoes of the caregivers at our hospital, exploring behind the scenes and gaining a deeper understanding of the work we do here.

There has been one group thus far, with the next group to tour in June, and members that took on the inaugural experience have raved about their experiences. Tammie Braun, Hospital Foundation Board Member, said “I want to come again next year and bring some of my friends along; this was great!” The goal of the program is to give participants an opportunity to see parts of the hospital that they may not have had a chance to otherwise see and learn about the services provided at our hospital. Additionally, departments highlight current and prospective improvements. Participants also have an opportunity to meet a number of caregivers along the tour route and have lunch with members of the hospital leadership team. Another board member said “This experience was wonderful. I really saw how passionate all the caregivers are about what they do. They love their jobs. I had no idea how many people from all over the hospital showed up during a trauma code when announced overhead.” I hope that you will consider joining me on one of the upcoming Earn Your Scrubs Day tours!

Our New NameYou will notice from the title of this publication a very significant change for those of us at the hospital, as well as for all the people of our region: As of April 19, 2016, CHI St. Joseph’s Health became “CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson”. We have joined with other Catholic Health Initiatives facilities in several central and western North Dakota communities to form CHI St. Alexius Health Regional Health Care System. Uniting in name will help our staff have access to greater resources and our patients experience an even better continuum of care between our facilities. And while we embrace all that it will mean to share the name “St. Alexius”, we are being purposeful in preserving the history and legacy of St. Joseph’s in our building and in our communities.

Along with that change, the name of our local foundation is now “CHI St. Alexius Dickinson Foundation”. That means dollars you gift will stay local, continuing to help your friends, family, and neighbors get the care they need with the best equipment and well-trained staff.

Thank you for your continued support as we announce this historic change. The future looks bright, and we invite you to continue to be part of it!

During a time in healthcare where budgets are tight and capital dollars are minimal, CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson Foundation helps in more ways than you can imagine. Most individual gifts we receive during the year still come with the instruction to for “equipment needs”. We are always grateful for those gifts for two reasons: First, it’s a strong indicator that the community fully trusts decisions made by the Foundation board. Second, it gives us the latitude to make sure funding will have a direct impact on the patient experience. We have listed some of those items here that we believe you will consider money well spent!

We greatly appreciate all who take pride in securing the very best equipment for our patients at our hospital and clinic. Your continued support is vital to the Foundation’s mission: the development and successful acquisition of gifts to assist our hospital and clinics in providing exceptional health care to the region.

During 2015, the Foundation spent over $385,000 dollars on equipment, scholarships, and medical related supplies for our hospital and clinics.

Burn Training Facilitators from North Colorado Medical Centers Western State Burn Center provided emergency burn training to staff from CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson, Valley Med Flight, local EMS squads, and other area clinicians.

City of Dickinson Fire Department receives an AED unit as part of 3 year grant awarded to 12 CHI rural hospitals within its Fargo Division including CHI St. Alexius Health through its Rural Access to Emergency Devices Grant Program. This grant has assured placement of 220 AEDs throughout rural Minnesota and North Dakota.
