Newsletter No. 2 16th February 2018

From the Principal ………..

Dear Parents, Each Monday at 3:00p.m. the whole school gathers for as-sembly. The purpose of a school assembly at Wattle Park Primary is to help students develop school pride in them-selves, their school and their country. It also enables students to share stories and performances, as well as their abilities/talents. It can contribute to student motivation through recognition of achievement. Students taking part also have a chance to work with students they may otherwise not usually choose to; open-ing minds, broadening horizons. Assembly provides a founda-tion of understanding for the community, in which students can better understand the “big picture” of their learning and school life. By being in assembly together, it immediately becomes something that everyone shares and identifies with, fostering greater solidarity and school spirit. Even the act of sitting, listening, showing respect to the speakers/performers is something that carries into later life, teaching respectful behavior, patience and affording new perspectives to those involved. Another important function of assembly for stu-dents is a platform for them to gain experience in perfor-mance, and particularly in public speaking. At last Monday’s assembly every Year 6 student was present-ed with their Leadership Badge by Mr Graham Watt (local member for Burwood) and me. Congratulations to all of our students. I would especially like to thank and acknowledge all of the parents and grandparents who attended the afternoon. It was very special to see our gymnasium filled with guests who made the time to attend this momentous ceremony. This week’s assembly we will be presenting Student Repre-sentative Council badges for students in Foundation to Year 6. The Foundation Family barbecue last Friday saw most of our foundation students and their families in attendance gath-ering together for a chat, sausage to eat or just a general climb

on the play equipment. Thank you to the Foundation teachers; Catherine, Kathryn and Robyn and Year 6 teachers Karl and Keren who grilled approximately 200 sausages. Each year we have been blessed with a lovely evening and last Friday was no exception. A big thank you also to Burwood Bakery (Jason I Yr 6) for donating 14 loaves of bread for the event. Much appre-ciated. Information Nights for all year levels- Year 1 to Year 6 were held on Tuesday night. Sessions were well attended. If however, you were unable to attend the night the information booklet will be available on our website shortly. We have two fundraising events scheduled for first term, our Family Movie Night screening Paddington 2 on Friday 16 th March and the Burwood Village Cake Stall on Saturday 24th March. Please see attached flyers to this newsletter. The Movie Night is a wonderful community event that has been a feature of our school for sixteen years! Communication is crucial between families and the school. Please ensure that you have signed up to our Konnective app. Mr Steve Donohue and I make every effort to ensure that school events and major reminders are sent through this communication tool. If you haven’t signed in you may miss the latest information. Notices for our Essential Items and associated costs were distributed to all families last week and are due by Friday 2nd March. For those of you who have health care cards you are entitled for a Camp, Sports and Education Fund. Please see application form attached or you can collect one from the office. Our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program has commenced for the Year 3 & 4 students with chef, Carolina Trantino and Penny Hayes. It was great to see the Year 3 & 4 classes with sufficient volunteers last week- but they are always needed! Please encourage any of your families or friends to volunteer. All that is needed is a current Working with Children’s Card, a signed Child Safe Code of Conduct and some enthusiasm! This week it was noted by a teacher on morning yard-duty that a parent dropped their children off to school stopping on War-rigal Road halting traffic! Under no circumstances is that behaviour permitted or tolerated. Not only were the students at risk but also other drivers on Warrigal Road. Please obey the traffic laws. Chinese New Year, also referred to as Lunar New Year, is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar. Chinese New Year 2018 is today! February 16th 2018. The celebration lasts from the night before the first day of the lunar year until the Lantern Festival 15 days later. Much like the celebration of the New Year in the Western world, Chinese New Year is all about the hopeful spirit of renewal. The holiday’s traditions, symbols and rituals are all meant to wipe the slate clean and prepare for prosperity, good luck and happiness in the New Year. Simply put, every Chinese New Year is a new beginning. Today, Chinese New Year is celebrated with fireworks and family dinners by more than a billion people around the world. Happy Chinese New Year!

I’ll leave you with some photos of our very proud Year 6 leaders.

Regards Gayle

Have you signed up for Konnective Yet? Konnective is a mobile app solution that will allow us to communicate with you, our parents, straight to your smartphone. You will be able to receive important alerts (similar to a text message) as soon as they are released.

Via the app, we can send communication to specific grade levels, so you will receive information specific to your child’s grade as well as general news or updates that will go to everyone. This will extend and enhance our existing communications (eg. Newsletter, website). For those without a smartphone, there will be a link to the general updates on our website.

Please see the instructions on how to register, log in and connect to Konnective.

By Helena in 3A Hey, today is Chinese New Year! Last night was Chinese New Year’s Eve. We went to Westfield and did shopping for a BBQ on Saturday. Then we went to a Chinese restaurant in Box Hill and we ate some special food. The food was delicious and I drank Fanta too. I got $500 in a red paper money envelope from my mum and dad. I will keep the money for when I go to Universi-ty. I was born in Year of the Ox. There are 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. In the 12th year, it is your special year and you wear red underwear for good luck. 2018 is the Year of the Dog. Happy Chinese New Year to everyone!

WPPS Twilight Movie Night 2018 Friday 16

th March

Our Movie Night this year is “Paddington 2” which will be screened outdoors near the Banksia St Gate

on the big screen.

This has been a highlight on the School’s Social Calendar for the past 16 years and continues to be so successful based on the volunteers from the school community.

Volunteers We need lots of volunteers to assist with the various stalls on the night. Can you or another adult in the

family spare an hour or two? There are spots to help out on the Gates, BBQ, Wine Stall, Movie Food

and Glowies Stall and Setting Up.

We expect that everyone helps out with Pack Up at the end of the night!

Movie Ticket Sales Avoid the queue at the gate, and save some money

by pre-purchasing your tickets. They are cheaper if you pre-order your tickets ra-

ther than purchasing at the door on the night! A pre-purchased Family Ticket is $35 and a single

ticket is $10. (Gate price is $40 for a Family Pass and

$12 for a Single Ticket). Go to https://www.trybooking.com/UEFA

Lolly Donations There is a tub outside the office and we are happily

taking donations of bags of lollies to sell on the night.

Movie Night Sponsorship We pride ourselves in promoting family and local busi-

nesses by offering a sponsorship package whereby we ad-vertise your business to the WPPS community in several

ways in the lead-up and after Movie Night. Contact Astrid Blackburn if you are interested in finding out more by emailing [email protected] or

calling her on 0408-001-300

All families will have received a letter of school contributions for 2018. As all supplies have been given to the students, it is imperative that contributions are paid. The school ap-preciates that families sometimes experience financial difficulties in meeting payment re-quests. A range of support options are available to parents who have difficulty making pay-ments including the CSEF ‘Camps, Sport and Excursions Fund’ and the State Schools Re-lief Committee support. The school office can assist you with the relevant forms if you have a current Healthcare Card, see notice below. Please be aware, if you wish to pay your school fees by cash, the correct amount is appreci-ated, as the office may not have correct change. Please contact the school on 9808 2165 if you need to make confidential arrangements with the School Principal, Ms Gayle Cope in order to meet your payment commitments. An al-ternative arrangement Family Payment Plan may be collected from the Office.

Garden Request Penny our SAKG Gardener has requested newspapers for garden. Please leave papers bundled up and place in tub on the trestle table outside of the 3/4 building .
