Plan to join us on November 18 following the 10:00 AM service for our monthly Pot Luck Luncheon. It is very important to sign up on the sheet in the fellowship hall to allow for sufficient seating to be arranged AHEAD OF TIME and to know what dish you are bringing. This helps to know what areas might be needing more dishes. We look forward to another great fellowship on November 21!

KING’S KITCHEN COOKING

King’s Kitchen, 1203 US 90, Bay St. Louis, began feeding people in the kitchen of Central Bible Church on November 19, 2012. In 2017 they saw a need to add a Saturday meal. They began initially feeding many home-less but today the ministry has evolved to feeding the “working poor”. It is a much needed ministry in a very poor county in one of the poorest states in the USA.

The Mission Committee of Diamondhead Community Church approved a mission of DCC to send an team of 6 persons from DCC who would cook and serve and decide if we wanted to participate in this mission. The team met, prepared food for 100 persons and served the meals to each of the “clients” who came on that Saturday. Our team was in agreement this was a needed mission and we wanted to see DCC participate. Out team prepared a casserole on Friday morning, 9:30 - 11:00 am. One of our team members had solicited Dan’s Sea-food and PoBoys on Aloha Drive who donated salad for 100. After chopping and preparing the casseroles the team went to lunch together. The team reassembled on Saturday morning at 8:00 am at DCC to cook the casseroles and have them ready to transport to King’s Kitchen that morning. We arrived at King’s Kitchen around 9:45 am and with the two staff members of King’s Kitchen the six of us made 100 salad bowls, prepared green beans in the large pots at King’s Kitchen, and prepared the bread and the desserts. Young students from St. Stanislaus served individual trays of cold drinks and food to all who were seated at tables of eight to receive the blessing and their food.

Afterwards all members of our team and St. Stanislaus assisted the King’s Kitch-en staff in cleaning the pots and pans and the floor. Everyone finished by 1:00 pm and left knowing that 78 people were fed a nourishing meal that day.

Please consider making a team of six members from DCC (or friends) or volun-teering individually to be teamed up with others. Please indicate your interest on the signup sheet in Fellowship Hall on the table by the kitchen. We will try to get 3 Saturdays in 2019 if we have enough members sign up.

Thank you, The Mission Committee

DCC LIBRARY NEWS In September 1620, approximately 100 puritans or separatists known for their strength to separate themselves from the corruption and lack of discipline within the Church of England departed the Old World. Carrying with them seeds and living plants, each with a purpose, either for food or medicine, they arrived at Plymouth in November. Since the pilgrimage took more than two months, it was too late to plant crops and with the long winter months upon them, they were certainly doomed. During that first winter more than half of the original settlers perished from starvation and disease. The remaining settlers would not have survived that first winter and the next few winters without help from the Wampa-noag people. The Wampanoag or “people of the light” defended the colonists against attack from the Narragansett tribe. In addition, they supplemented their food supply and shared their secrets with the colonists for growing native crops, catching fish and hunting in a New World with a colder climate and different growing conditions.

The first Harvest Festival in 1621, a tradition in England was not a picture perfect scene. Lacking were linen tablecloths and fancy buckles on hats, belts and boots, but it was one of the most critical events in United States history. During the celebration, which lasted several days, the remaining colonists thanked the members of the Wampa-noag Tribe for their survival. They drank hard apple cider and feasted on mashed and baked pumpkin, venison meat and stew, squash, corn, beans, clams, nuts cranberries, fish, lobster and wild turkey.

As you approach our Harvest Festival, Thanksgiving Day, sing several choruses of “Over the River and through the woods” and visualize your childhood memories of Thanksgiving Day. Moreover, as you prepare the feast, be thankful that you do not have to chase, kill, clean and roast a 40-pound wild turkey. Lastly, before beginning to feast thank the separatists for their courage and bravery to leave Europe, and the Wampanoag people for their generosity and willingness to share their foodstuffs and knowledge with the colonists.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A BOOK REVIEW — by Bob Benzing

Don Piper with Cecil Murphy in 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN did a great job describing

his very difficult personal experience and how eventually he discovered why his visit to heaven was a brief one. Do not expect the book to be entirely about Piper’s time in heaven, but how God sent him back as messenger to help others believe in heaven and not to convince anyone of his experience.

LETTER TO THE SESSION, From Bill Buchanan My brothers and sisters on Session I’m sorry I could not attend the Session retreat. Noni and I made plans over 6 months ago. It is her birthday. I have realized each day with her is a gift.

I want to address the issue of consideration to leave the PCUSA. I watched 5-6 years ago in Jackson, MS when two of the five PCUSA congregations voted to leave the PCUSA. One of the two churches has almost closed and the other church members have told me they can tell little to no difference in the theology, the Sunday services and where they were as a congregation before the decision. Some told me they wished they had stayed the course because they don’t have the support as they did in the PCUSA.

There are tremendous advantages to being in the PCUSA. Some, but not all of these, are 1) the especially rich pool of ministers to serve in a variety of capacities from Senior Pastor, to Associate Pastor to Parish Associate to Director of Christian Education. The reason for these training programs is the heritage of the PCUSA seminaries. They are the finest in the USA. 2) The tremendous support of the Board of Pensions of the PCUSA who guide and direct financial decisions of our ministers and the staffs of churches. No longer do we have destitute ministers of the Word who served their church(s) well but had no support even to purchase a home when they re-tired (remember most churches provided manses for their ministers) much less to support them and their spouse. 3) The PCUSA is a tremendous educational resource for each PCUSA church such as opportunities for ministers to return to seminaries and study groups to enrich their skills, educational programs for Sunday School, Bible studies, Bible school, Pro-grams for the youth, Mission opportunities both in the USA and worldwide, a strong international Mission recognized throughout the world, all built upon a strong reformed theology foundation. 4) The PCUSA (1983) and its predecessors have over 180 years of Reformed Theology in the USA. Of course in that period there have been schisms and revisions but the tradition lives on. This is not the first time the church has had dissension and it will not be the last.

LETTER TO THE SESSION

5) The foundation of the PCUSA is doctrinal theology. No other church can claim its richness. Some use many of our same creeds and doctrines but none have all that the PCUSA has developed over the years. 6) Lastly I would like to address an issue I hear repeated a few times. That is the issue of hypocrisy and how can we live with the ordination of “gays” and same sex marriages when “the Bible does not provide

for us to live in that manner”. This decision as outlined in the Book of Order, 2015-2017, is left up to each local congregation realizing not all PCUSA congregations will interpret scripture in exactly the same way. Therefore a) the local church is the ultimate authority through the Session to control the use of all church property(s), which includes the Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, all the classrooms and other rooms in the building(s) including all the church grounds and other properties. Also the Session has the ultimate authority to call a minister justified by the vote of the congregation. b) The Session also guides the minister to fulfill their role as teaching elder. Therefore if the minister moved against the Session on this issue, the Session may allow the minister to leave the church and find another church who may hire them.

The second great commandment tells us to love our neighbor as our self. Are we acting in love if we try to tear down the church? I think not. This is the time to unite with Jesus Christ, the head of the church, and as Jesus did and taught us to associate with all - beggars, harlots, the deranged, the sick, the orphaned, the widowed, the homeless and those who don’t smell like us, look like us or think like us.

I pray that each one of you on this Session will pray and especially LISTEN to God on that which has conflicted some of us. We should never have this reaction to the Love of Jesus Christ and His church. There’s too much to do in Jesus’s name in this world and too little time to have this issue occupy so much of our time, thoughts and prayers.
