DGGB NEWS & EVENTS
Dear Guild Members,
It’s been a busy summer so far; a new Government for the country, and shortly a new office for the Guild. Our lease at Windmill Street has expired
and we shall be moving to a leafier part of London - the Royal Victoria Buildings on Wandsworth Common – a stone’s throw from Clapham
Junction. My thanks to Clive Duncan and Adrian Hall at ALRA for helping us find the new space. We will notify you of our new contact details when
finalised.
The new government has focused attention sharply on issues of funding across the arts, on copyright and on issues of diversity and equality.
Though the follow-up to last year’s Gender Equality conference has had to be postponed, these matters are very much for debate. I recently
delivered a lecture on the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity at the Polish National Film Festival in Gdynia; protecting and promoting
culture in its own right, and not just as a matter of trade, is a legal duty right across the world, and I hope that the UK and Europe will begin to
recognise the value of the “creative industries” outside their purely economic returns. The full text of the talk can be found at:
http://tinyurl.com/Diversitytalk.
I also note that the backlash has started against the badly flawed Digital Economy Act which was rushed through parliament by Lord Mandelson
just before the election. OFCOM are running a public consultation on the implementation of the “3 strikes” rule for suspected Internet piracy
(http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/copyright-infringement/) and the Open Rights Group are holding a conference on copyright and the Act
at City University on 24th July - tickets £10 from http://orgcon.eventbrite.com.
The Guild is now working together with several UK film festivals; we held or will be holding events with Sci Fi London, Rushes and the Turkish
London Film Festival, who have asked me to find out if any of our members have ever filmed in Turkey or plan to do so. Please contact me directly
at [email protected] if this is the case.
The Guild’s excellent events program continues to gather steam; the Introduction to 3D Evening on 24th June will have some of the top UK 3D
practitioners. Speakers will be coming from (among others) Sky, Decode and The Foundry (Avatar, Clash of the Titans). We are following up Simon
Phillips’ January workshop on his new “Advanced Tools of Directing” methods with a full weekend workshop from 2nd to 4
th July; this is the first
genuinely new methodology in directing to emerge in fifty years and I’m thrilled Simon has chosen to work with us. Prices are necessarily high (but
still heavily subsidised) and we are offering a number of bursaries. Please contact the office on 0207 580 9131 or 07977 237295 to book a place.
I’m aware that balancing the needs of directors working in different media can seem tricky, but in fact, two-thirds of what we do, be it in theatre, film,
television or radio is largely the same – we work with writers, producers, performers, designers and technicians to get a project made – and the last
third takes that project to the stage, or the screen, or the loudspeakers. So our August 15th workshop is targeted at all of us; voice-work for
directors, by accent coach and voice teacher Terry Besson. If you’re not off on an August holiday, then keep that Sunday free.
Finally, my apologies for the long delay in the directory; the forthcoming office move has set us back, but our new online database (where you can
update your own directory entry) is nearing completion and we hope to have it released to you in July.
Guild events and benefits are only open to members with a current subscription - so if you still haven't paid your 2010 subscription, it's never been
easier - go to http://www.dggb.org/join.php and click on the Paypal form. And if you know a director or someone who is interested to learn more
who is not a member, please don’t keep the Guild a secret – sign them up.
Wishing all our members the very best with projects, plans and openings,
Regards,
Ivor Benjamin – Chair

Advanced Tools of Directing Actors - with Simon Phillips A Directors Guild weekend masterclass Friday 2 July – Sunday 4 July 2010 (London, Shaw Theatre)
Have you ever felt that all the existing methods were for the actors to do great work, and there was some deep, dark secret that the experts weren't
telling about what a director can do? In January the Guild staged an introduction to Advanced Tools of Directing. Simon Phillips’ ground-breaking
techniques give directors their own unique methodology, neither dependent on theories of writing nor acting, but relating specifically to the
director’s craft. He brings new insight and clarity to the complex task of directing film - and though Simon’s methods are targeted at film for now,
they are equally applicable to the theatre. The Guild is now delighted to promote a weekend master-class exploring the Advanced Tools of
Directing in detail. Because of the one-to-one nature of Simon’s work, places are very limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. The
Guild is able to offer a limited number of heavily discounted placements.

INDUSTRY NEWS & EVENTS
The Economic Impact of the UK Film Industry The UK film industry contributes over £4.5 billion a year to UK GDP and more than £1.2 billion to the Exchequer, according to a report published
earlier this week by Oxford Economics. The Economic Impact of the UK Film Industry – commissioned by the UK Film Council, Pinewood
Shepperton plc, Framestore, Cinesite and Double Negative – concludes that the UK film industry is substantial, is weathering the recession well,
and its long-term trend is one of strong growth and expansion. The report also concludes that the UK’s film tax relief is vital, generating an extra
£13 in GDP for every £1 invested. Without it, UK GDP would be reduced by around £1.4 billion a year. Read more at

sort out issues of copyright for creators. Guild Members should to take a look and complete the survey. Closing date: 30th July 2010. Link:

The BFI continues to survey the work of a golden generation of TV dramatists; more of the best shorter-form dramas from the last decade or so.

undervaluing what might well be a new golden generation of TV dramatists. For more info and to download the full programme of events and

Bronco Bullfrog, screening and Q&A Barney Platts-Mills 19 June 2010 (London, Curzon Soho)
Barney Platts-Mills’ cult film about a 17-year-old Eastender and his gang met with great critical acclaim on its release in 1970. Other than Mike
Leigh, it’s arguable that no one has better portrayed the true agony and ecstasy of British teenage wastelands – a stark yet humorous canvas of
working-class East-End values, and a perfect snapshot of the Mod-influenced fashions that dominated the late 60s. Saturday 19 June, 4.30pm.

Panel discussion on increasing global understanding: Making Media Matter 24 June 2010 (London, Channel 4)
One World Media Week brings a panel discussion on increasing global understanding through effective use of the media, boosting International
Drama. At present, access to stories from the developing world is limited to news and current affairs. Could drama play a bigger role in bringing
stories from the wider world to new audiences? What are the challenges in bringing audiences this kind of content? Do production companies self-
censor international stories through fear they won't be funded? This panel discussion presents evidence of how viewers respond to content about
the developing world and show why drama could be television's missed opportunity to bring international stories to a mass audience. It will also
discuss the challenges in getting these stories on UK television as well as learn from recent successes such as Blood and Oil, Endgame, and I am
Slave. Chair: Camilla Campbell, Head of Drama, Channel 4. Thursday 24th June from 6.15pm at Channel 4. This event is free but places are
limited - to book your place email [email protected].
White Material, preview screening and Q&A Claire Denis 24 June 2010 (London, Curzon Soho)

and fearless white woman, refuses to abandon her coffee crops, or to acknowledge the danger to which she is exposing her family. For Maria, to
leave is to surrender: a sign of weakness, of cowardice. Isabelle Huppert and Christopher Lambert lead an astonishing cast in this African-set first
action drama from French auteur Claire Denis. Thursday 24 June, 6.20pm. http://www.curzoncinemas.com/events/qanda

Islamic state, will launch the festival. Other highlights include the UK premiere of We Are Half of Iran's Population, an insight into women
demanding change prior to the controversial 2009 election, harrowingly contextualised by the reality that, by the film's completion, three women
involved had been imprisoned; a double bill of films plus a Q&A from acclaimed director Kim Longinotto, a filmmaker renowned for creating

LDN24 by the Light Surgeons – new Museum of London display The Light Surgeons’ LDN24 is the first winner of the Museum of London Film Commission, a new biennial competition in association with Film
London, which will attract and develop London’s brightest and most innovative multimedia artists and film-makers. LDN24 follows a 24-hour day in
the life of London with hundreds of filmed sequences from across the capital - framing the city waking, working and winding down on a giant
plasma screen. LDN24 by The Light Surgeons is a new display which forms an integral part of the new Galleries of Modern London. An innovative
and radical vision of the city is played out across an astonishing elliptical chandelier screen which stretches for 48 metres. The Light Surgeons craft
a dynamic exchange with the living city by marrying high-definition filmwork with a kaleidoscopic LED display which perpetually rewrites the London
scene and prompts the audio soundtrack whose pulse is dictated by the currents of digital data. An enveloping stream of 35 real-time information
flows around the LED ellipse producing an ever-changing map of the city, with software choreographing the rituals and movements of London and
Londoners into a compelling statistical dance. http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/English/EventsExhibitions/Special/The+Light+Surgeons.htm
