JULY 2010 THE GYEMO

This movement was realized because we see the truth; the truth that we Youth have so much potential for addressing the issues we see around us, yet we are characterized by the media as directionless, materialistic party animals! This is not what we are capable of! Youth are the future! That future must be nurtured, and ONE of the ways we have learned to do so through experience, is through service. Being united to do service for the betterment of our world, and having fun while doing it! All the issues we see around us today, we are helpless to address alone. Yet if we join together our brilliant minds and unique talents, we are more than capable of Bring the movers and shakers of the world. We are global citizens, that is our identity and we are all bound by the fact that each and everyone one of us has something to offer! We are blurring the boundaries between you and me, and us and them. We are simply we; the Youth of the world.  This is something I personally, strongly believe in. I believe every Youth is capable of chipping in their own part to our world; the only issues are they don't know how or what others are already doing. Through the GYEM open source website, we are trying to link every single project existing, either Youth-led or Youth-inspired, so Youth know what's going on, how try can get involved, and can share their own projects and thoughts. It's our time to shine Youth! Let's show the world what were made of, and break these ideas that we Youth need to be rebellious and lost. We are focused, brilliant and filled with a vigor for life. Let's get involved!!

JULY 2010 THE GYEMO

Past Projects On the 28th & 29th of November, GYEM hosted

their first ever workshop. People from all over the Middle East attended this fun-filled, beneficial

weekend with the intention of educating their minds about how much one individual can make a

difference. The question is, did the guests leave satisfied? Well, these guests are now part of the

GYEM team. So, ask yourself, was this dedicated group of people moved by the workshop?

Of course GYEM being its innovative self couldn’t begin the workshop in an ordinary way. Once the

doors opened, an interesting pathway was set up with loud upbeat music in the background. The atmosphere was fun, exciting and it caused the

room to be flooded with laughter. This pathway was in fact the pathway towards a brighter future;

but at the beginning, it was just a pathway to comfortable seats in the youths’ eyes. With ages

varying diversely, there were cultures varying even more with people sharing similar passions: to be

part of the GYEM movement.

There were a great number of different activities

such as profile walls, researching in the computer lab as well as writing resolutions. There were also

many enjoyable games to create that comfortable

bond between the attendees. Many skills were developed such as teamwork, confidence and

leadership. Everyone has a passion; this workshop was mainly a chance for people to shine in the way

they dream to shine. Youth today may not be given many opportunities; GYEM wants to provide youth

with the confidence to be able to do whatever they desire without fear. One part of this workshop that

truly stood out was the secret t-shirt activity. Throughout the day, everyone had to wear a plain t-

shirt and everyone had to write an attribute on each other’s backs. At the end of the day, each person removed their t-shirts and read what was written.

The way so many faces lit up was phenomenal. It’s nice to know what others think of you and when

they are such beautiful words, smiles appear. Imagine a room filled with smiling youths; now isn’t

that a beautiful sight? So think to yourself, if someone wrote on

your back, would you smile when reading?

What do you think? This is a section from a reflection one youth wrote

about the GYEM Workshop. “I learnt that I am capable to be part of a movement and as part of the youth of today; I have the ability to cause a positive change in the world. At first I felt very useless and I didn’t believe that one person could make a difference but thanks to my best friend who was also the organizer of this workshop, I have completely changed my mind. I have seen how motivated one person can be and how hard they will try to make the world be a better place to live in. My attitude towards life overall has become more positive and I developed values which has made me less selfish. When you have everything you could possibly wish for, you tend to forget about others who don’t have this privilege.” -By Elisar Sasso Saksouk

JULY 2010 THE GYEMO

GYEM has done it again! Following the remarkable workshop GYEM organized, they have hit a new level of innovation. On the 11th December 2009, over 5,000 people participated in The Terry Fox Run, which was held in Mamzar Park. Residents of all ages and nationalities took part raising over 500,000 AED. One highlight of the event was the motivated commitment the GYEM team supplied, contributing towards a great part of the success produced. With the efficient litter monitors and recycling bins, allowed this event to be green and positive towards the environment. The GYEM team made sure that everybody was aware of how to dispose of their water bottles along with any other forms of plastic, by supplying everybody with a pink ribbon labeled ‘litter monitor’. This gave the public the opportunity to not only support this green movement but to also guide others in the right direction as well, giving people the authority to endorse no littering. Of course the GYEM team didn’t stop there. They made sure an inventive spirit was spread throughout the event by using music as a way of promoting awareness. The extremely talented Abdullah Al Khateri and Ritz Miranda held a performance on stage. This was by far the most successful act as it attracted a very large crowd fulfilling GYEM’s aim of spreading awareness in a number of innovative means. GYEM wouldn’t be the unique organization it is if their plans just stopped there. The team has a passion of taking something so simple and turning it into something spectacular, with the intention of affecting everybody positively. On top of all the fantastic contributions forwarded by the GYEM team, they made an unforgettable gesture towards recycling. A monument was made using wooden crates as the frame, encouraging runners-by to stick their plastic on to gradually form a structure. The tree symbolized the seed that Terry Fox planted, not just for cancer, but also for all the ways that we as human beings can embrace our own problems, as well as the need for heightened awareness about not wasting. GYEM is all about youth giving back to the environment. Whenever the team sees an opportunity to spread awareness and attract people into the movement, they grab it with both hands and give it their all. The day certainly benefited from the GYEM support, as the amount of plastic collected and recycled was phenomenal. Who knows what GYEM will do next but we definitely know that it will be superlative.

JULY 2010 THE GYEMO

On the 20th of November 2009 Dubai Cares organized the ‘Water Bucket Walk’, a charity event that aimed to provide children around the world with clean drinking water. Over 5,000 residents across the UAE participated in a 3 km walk along the Jumeirah Beach Road where registered a minimal fee of AED 30 each and received a Dubai Cares t-shirt, bucket and a bottle of water. All proceeds went directly towards providing the children in developing countries with access to clean water. The atmosphere throughout the event was highly jovial and it was encouraging and even inspiring to see so many youth of different nationalities participating in this event to aid children in need. Overall it was a huge success for the participants as well as the numerous volunteers who worked throughout the event. By Hayon Shin

Future Projects GYEM Graffiti Wall

GYEM’s   first  major  project   is   going   to  be   to   graffiti   a   tunnel   at   the  Dubai  Festival  City  Waterfront  Mall.  The   theme  of   the   tunnel   is  Building  Hope.  The   idea   is   to  bring   the  entire  Dubai  community  together,   from   children,   to   families,   to   university   students,   to   professionals   and   local   community  groups.  Anyone  can  join  in  and  paint  or  spray  an  image  or  simple  a  word.  There’s  going  to  be  roads  running   into  the  tunnel,  and  there’s  going  to  be  street  signs  and  random  car  doors  and  essentially  ‘junk’   bolted   onto   the   tunnel   to   give   it   an   interesting   texture.   We   are   unifying   the   community  through  fun  art,  while  sending  a  powerful  message;  the  message  of  the  small  things  we  cherish  that  give  us  hope,  and  more  importantly,  that  we  still  have  hope!  Hope  for  a  brighter  future,  hope  for  our  children  and  hope  for  humanity!  Because  of  the  hot  weather,  this  will  be  happening  towards  October  as  it  is  an  outdoor  event.  Two  full  days  of  funky  painting,  spraying  and  drawing.      If  anyone  has  any  questions  or  suggestions  please  email  us  at  [email protected].

GYEM Space

We are opening up a Youth Community Center in Dubai Festival City Waterfront Mall; a 2-story 36,000sqft building adjacent to the mall. It’s going to be a GYEM center where we…

-‐ hold GYEM workshops -‐ display past, ongoing and future Youth-led service projects happening in Dubai (and the

UAE) -‐ have a design/art studio (for projects) -‐ have the GYEM headquarters -‐ play weekly documentaries open to the public -‐ have regular mini conferences where Youth come and speak about what projects they’re doing

We are very excited and it’s a brand new project. We’ve started planning out the design and floor plan of the building and hope to have it up and running by the end of August! It’s going to be a place where all Youth can meet to discuss, learn, share and enjoy themselves! It’s a huge project, but will be all the worthwhile when it’s finished. We are trying to connect all the Youth in Dubai and eventually the UAE. Currently we’re working on getting funding for fitting out the place; furniture, stationary, design studio materials, and electronic equipment. (The brief for the space is included in the email attachment.)
