DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix Introduction

1 Introduction

The DEXIS® Integrator™ for Dentrix software represents the next generation in the seamless integration of digital imaging software with practice management programs. It displays preview thumbnails of all available radiographic and photographic images in a window inside the Dentrix Chart. This enables the user to have direct and immediate one-click access to the images from the patients’ Dentrix records.

The Integrator features four icons which can be used to select the different types of images: intra-oral X-rays, extra-oral (panoramic and cephalo-metric) X-rays, intra-oral photographic images, and extra-oral photographic images.

A small light below an icon indicates that the corresponding screen contains images.

If you simply double-click on a thumbnail image, it will be shown at full size in DEXview™, the DEXIS image viewer. This is the quickest way to inspect single images. With the image displayed, you can use the mouse to change brightness and contrast, and you can use ClearVu™ functionality to enhance the image. If you then click anywhere else in the Integrator window, QuickLaunch™ will open the DEXIS imaging software allowing you to use the full functionality of the DEXIS program and to acquire new images.

DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix integrates the DEXIS imaging software and the Dentrix practice management program providing:

• Icons in the tooth chart that indicate available images for specific teeth.

• Function buttons in Dentrix Chart that allow one-click acquisition of X-rays and intra-oral camera images.

• Images that can be attached to electronic claims, lab cases, referrals, and presentations with simple mouse clicks.

DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix version 3 has been qualified to work with DEXIS Software version 9 and with DEXIS Imaging Suite™. In this document we use the term "DEXIS imaging software" if we refer to either of these imaging packages.

DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix version 3 has been qualified with the following versions of practice management software:

• Dentrix G3 (Windows® XP/32 bit only)

• Dentrix G4 (Windows XP/32 bit, Vista/32 bit, Windows 7/32 bit, Windows 7/64 bit)

• Dentrix Enterprise 4 (Windows Server 2003 only)

1.1 Intended Use of the DEXIS Imaging Software

The DEXIS imaging software is a software program for general dental and maxillofacial diagnostic imaging. It controls capture, display, enhance-ment and saving of X-ray digital images from digital imaging systems. It can also handle other types of images acquired by digitizing film with a flat bed scanner, or color images from intra-oral and extra-oral dental cameras.

CAUTION

US Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a dentist or other licensed practitioner.

1.2 Conventions Used in the Manual

The following conventions are used to bring the operator’s attention to im-portant information:

2 Installation

DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix is an add-on to the main DEXIS imaging software. The DEXIS imaging software therefore needs to be installed first, before installing the Integrator.

CAUTION

If you have already entered patients in DEXIS without using a link to your practice management program, installation of DEXIS Integrator should not be attempted without assistance from DEXIS Technical Support. The previously entered pa-tients will have to be renumbered to match the IDs issued by the practice management program; otherwise the installa-tion may result in improper linking and even loss of data. Al-ways back up your image database before installing the Integrator.

Operating System Platform

This software has been validated for use on the following members of the Microsoft Windows product family of operating systems:

• Windows XP Professional SP3 (32 bit)

• Windows Vista Business SP2 (32 bit)

• Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise, all SP1 (32 and 64 bit)

Restrictions may be implied by the connected practice management system. Do not deploy this software for use on other versions of Microsoft Windows unless the software has been validated for use on that platform by DEXIS Technical Support.

Integrator Installation CD

To begin the installation, insert the DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. The CD is equipped with an Autorun feature and will start on its own. Should the Autorun feature not work with the CD-ROM drive in your computer, you can launch the installation menu manually: Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, open the CD-ROM drive by double-clicking on its icon, and double-click on the DEXmenu icon.

Select Software

Click on Install Integrator for Dentrix to install the Integrator software.

Please note: If this is an upgrade of the Integrator software, please do not uninstall the older version unless requested to do so by a DEXIS Technical Support Representative.

Choose Destination Location

During the installation process you will be asked for the folder into which the software should be installed. This folder must be the same folder you selected when the DEXIS software was installed, typically C:\DEXIS for DEXIS Software version 9, and C:\Program Files\DEXIS for DEXIS Imaging Suite.

3 Usage

3.1 Dentrix Chart

When you open Dentrix Chart and select a patient, in the Image Pane you see the patient images and the Integrator tool bar.

3.1.1 Image Pane

Click on the DEXIS logo to show program information, to open the Integrator User Manual (click on the Help button), or to access the DEXIS web site.

Use the icons on the Integrator tool bar to view the stored images on the DEXray and DEXimage intra-oral and extra-oral screens. (Lights under the icons indicate that images are present.)

Hold the mouse over an image for two seconds to show information about the image.

Double-click on an image to open an enlarged version in DEXview, where you may enhance it by changing the brightness and contrast or by using ClearVu.

Click on the highlighted icon again or click anywhere on the background of the Integrator to open the DEXray software so that you have full access to the DEXIS tools and can acquire new images. When you are finished, close the DEXray software.

Click on images to select them – the borders will turn golden. Click again to deselect, or click the Deselect All icon to deselect all images.

3.1.2 One-click Acquisition

The Dentrix Image Toolbar gives one-click access to the acquisition func-tions of the DEXIS imaging software:

• The Intra-oral Camera icon leads to the Live Video screen in DEXimage. Use this function to acquire intra-oral camera images and to store them in the patient’s file.

• The X-ray Sensor icon lets you acquire intra-oral X-rays with DEXray. If you selected a tooth in the chart before clicking this icon, the tooth will auto-matically be selected in the DEXray acquisition dialog.

• The Scanner icon lets you acquire pans or cephs with the attached phos-phor plate scanner or digital pan.

3.1.3 Access to Legacy Images

If you switched from using Dentrix Image to DEXIS imaging software, and have Dentrix Image installed on the computer, you may access its modules and the images stored in its database by clicking the Switch To icon.

This function is disabled if Dentrix Image is not installed.

3.1.4 Tooth Image Indicators

Small icons next to a tooth in the chart indicate images are available for that tooth:

• A gray icon indicates radiographs are available.

• A red icon indicates intra-oral camera images are available.

3.2 Guru Patient Education

If Guru Patient Education is installed, you will see a Guru icon in the Inte-grator Toolbar. Click on this icon while images are selected to open Guru and to copy the selected images to Guru.

Please note: The Guru button is only active when images are selected.

3.3 Presenter

Dentrix Presenter allows images to be included in presentations. For this purpose, Presenter shows an Image Pane similar to the image pane dis-played when Dentrix Chart is open (see page 5). With the Image tab select-ed, clicking the Add icon adds selected images to the current presentation.

3.4 Attachments

Images can be attached to the following electronic documents of Dentrix:

• Electronic claims (maximum of 10 images per claim)

• Lab cases

• Referrals via Web

The method for attaching the image(s) varies according to the source of the electronic document to which they are attached.

The method for selecting the image(s) is the same regardless of the source of the electronic document to which they are attached:

• Select from the DEXray and DEXimage intra-oral and extra-oral category buttons to view the stored images for the category selected. (The select-ed button turns golden.)

• Select images to attach by clicking on them. (Deselect all images with the “–” button.)

• Attach the selected images with the “+” button.

• Chose Composed series to attach all images as one file. Chose Separate files to attach each image as a separate file.

4 DEXIS i-CAT Link

The DEXIS i-CAT Link optional module integrates i-CAT based cone beam CT systems into the DEXIS imaging software. Supported systems include:

• Imaging Sciences i-CAT 17-19

• GXCB-500 HD

• KaVo 3DeXam and 3DeXam-i

DEXIS i-CAT Link allows you to schedule patients for volume or pan acquisition from the DEXIS imaging software and from Integrator. The patient data is automatically passed to the acquisition software, so that data does not have to be entered twice. For each acquired volume DEXIS i-CAT Link stores a placeholder image in the DEXIS image database that serves as a link to the volume. Clicking on the placeholder image opens the volume in the Vision 3D viewer program. Acquired 2D images - pans and exported slices - are stored in the DEXIS image database to be directly accessible in the DEXray imaging program and the DEXview image viewer.

If DEXIS i-CAT Link is installed, Integrator for Dentrix shows an additional “3D” button. Click this button to schedule a 3D acquisition directly from Dentrix. The patient name and other known information will be auto-matically transferred to the acquisition workstation.

After acquiring a volume, a placeholder image will be shown in the extra-oral X-ray section of the DEXray program and of Integrator for Dentrix, which contains a link to the acquired volume.

Click on the shown placeholder image to open the acquired volume in the Vision 3D viewer.

4.1 Installation of DEXIS i-CAT Link

The following software has to be installed before installing DEXIS i-CAT Link:

• DEXIS Software version 9.0.4 or higher or DEXIS Imaging Suite

• Vision 3D Viewer

• VisionConnect

Having installed these prerequisites, run the DEXIS i-CAT Link setup program to install DEXIS i-CAT Link in the DEXIS software folder. The setup program will copy the necessary files and will add the necessary settings to include DEXIS i-CAT Link into the DEXIS imaging software and into Integrator for Dentrix.

DEXIS i-CAT Link requires a separate license code.

5 Client-Server Mode

The Client-Server Mode is for practices that use Windows Terminal Services or Citrix® to share the Dentrix Enterprise Practice Management System and want to take X-rays on a client workstation. The client workstation needs to be a complete computer running Windows, not just a so-called ‘thin client.’ The client workstation can be located in the same office as the server, or can be located in a different office using a WAN (Wide Area Network) connection.

If multiple offices are involved, each office has to have its own image database, which is synchronized with a central server regularly using DEXsync™. All involved image databases have to have the same patient IDs issued by a central practice management system.

The method:

• Dentrix runs on the central server. It is viewed from a client workstation in a Remote Desktop window using Terminal Services or Citrix.

• Integrator for Dentrix is installed on the Terminal Server and set to server mode. Integrator Client is installed on the client workstation.

• When a patient is selected in the Remote Desktop, the server installation of Integrator for Dentrix shows the patient’s X-rays that are located on the central server.

• When the user clicks on the Integrator window to start the DEXray software, the Remote Desktop window is minimized, and DEXray is opened on the client workstation. The software runs locally on the workstation; therefore all functionality and connected hardware is available.

• When DEXray is closed, the Remote Desktop window is automatically reopened and shows the server installation of DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix.

• In installations with only one image database (single office installation), the local DEXIS installation on the client computer shows the same X-rays as the server installation that is located on the server.

• In multiple office installations, where each satellite office has its own image database, the client workstation shows the images located in the

local image database, and puts newly acquired images into the local database. For these installations Integrator Client can be set to copy all new images automatically to the central server, so that they are shown in Integrator as soon as they are available.

Please note: Viewing stations that do not acquire images do not need client-server mode. For viewing stations the DEXray software can run centralized on the Main Server, and images can be viewed through the Remote Desktop window.

5.1 Single Office Client-Server Installation

In this type of installation, a local image database on the server is shared across the network of client workstations.

On the server: Install the DEXIS imaging software and DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix. Make sure the DEXIS image database is accessible from all workstations.

On each acquisition workstation:

• Install the DEXIS imaging software and Integrator Client. Set up the DEXIS imaging software to access the same image database as the server installation.

• Access the server through the Remote Desktop window. Open Dentrix Chart and select a patient; this will open Integrator for Dentrix. Click on the DEXIS icon in the Integrator tool bar and select Preferences. Select Server Version (Talking to Client). Leave the field Client-Server Mailbox empty. Note: This option is only available if DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix is accessed from a Remote Desktop.

• Restart each client workstation.

5.2 Multiple Office Client-Server Installation

In multiple office installations each office should have its own image database to avoid extensive wide area network traffic with possible loss of data. The centralized and local databases can then regularly be synchronized through DEXsync, so that they contain the same image files. The Integrator Client-Server Mode can also work in this environment. Integrator Client can be set to send all new images to the central server, so that they become quickly available in DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix and in viewing stations running the DEXIS imaging software.

In this type of installation, the DEXIS software and Dentrix software are installed at the main office and at each satellite office using the same procedure as described in “Single Office Client-Server Installation” on page 14. Each office has a separate image database. DEXsync synchronizes the main office database with the satellite office databases.

On all acquisition workstations in the satellite offices Integrator Client is then set to send all new images to a shared folder set up on the central server located in the main office.

On the central server in the main office:

• Install the DEXIS imaging software and DEXIS Integrator for Dentrix. Make sure the DEXIS image database is accessible from all workstations located in the central office.

• Create a folder that is shared across the whole network including satellite offices. This folder is to be used as a mailbox where workstations located in satellite offices can leave new images. (Client-Server Mailbox)

On each acquisition workstation in the main office:

• Install the DEXIS imaging software and Integrator Client. Set up the DEXIS imaging software to access the same image database as the server installation.

• Access the server through the Remote Desktop window. Open Dentrix Chart and select a patient; this will open Integrator for Dentrix. Click on the DEXIS icon in the Integrator tool bar and select Preferences. Select Server Version (Talking to Client). Leave the field Client-Server Mailbox empty. Please Note: This option is only available if DEXIS Integrator for Dentrixis accessed from a Remote Desktop.


On each server in the satellite offices:

• Install the DEXIS imaging software. Make sure the DEXIS image database is accessible from all workstations located in the same office.

On each acquisition workstation in the satellite offices:

• Install the DEXIS imaging software and Integrator Client. Set up the DEXIS imaging software to access the local image database.

• Access the central server through the Remote Desktop window. Open Dentrix Chart and select a patient; this will open Integrator for Dentrix. Click on the DEXIS icon in the Integrator tool bar and select Preferences. Select Server Version (Talking to Client). Enter the path to the Client-Server Mailbox folder created on the central server in the field Client-Server Mailbox.

• Make sure Integrator Client is started on the client workstation. Right-click on the Integrator taskbar icon of the client workstation. Click on the DEXIS icon and select Preferences. Enter the path to the Client-Server Mailbox folder created on the central server in the field Client-Server Mailbox.
