Can I buy my hardware from another vendor?
It is discouraged to purchase your hardware from an outside vendor because of the specific configuration required to support a Dentrix Enterprise install. This configuration is included in the cost of Henry Shein purchased hardware but incurs an additional cost for hardware purchased from outside vendors. Additional travel
and cost could also be assessed where there are missing or incorrect hardware items ordered.
It is recommended that each site meet with the DXE Training contact that will be provided through your account manager. They will help you assess the gap of knowledge between your
current software release and the release you will upgrade to. It is recommended that you plan to provide training to your office staff
to best utilize and maximize your upgrade.
Review the Features tab. Find the release you are currently on. All of the features listed in the columns between your current release and 8.0.5 will be new features your office can utilize.Features

submitting electronic claims. The following is a portion of a statement prepared by Henry Schein Practice
Solutions (HSPS) regarding HIPAA 5010 compliance: HSPS has reviewed the
HIPAA privacy, security and electronic data interchange regulations and
continues to evaluate related additional legal requirements to ensure timely compliance of HSPS’s systems and procedures with applicable HIPAA
requirements, including those added as a result of the HITECH Act enacted in
2009.

add-on, you can now send prescriptions electronically to participating pharmacies and manage those prescriptions online.
You can also access information drug and allergy interactions for a patient and check a patient’s prescription history.

Tip: To find participating pharmacies, go to http://www.surescripts.com, click the Find E-Prescribing Pharmacies tab at the
top of the page, and then enter your search criteria.
Practice Definitions – There are new practice definitions for the following:
• Allergen types – You can now have up to 99 allergen types, which you can attach to allergies.• Allergen reactions – You can now have up to 99 allergy reactions, which you can attach to
allergies.• Allergen severities – You can now have up to 99 medical alert or allergen severities, which you can attach to medical alerts and allergies.• PQRI registries – You can now have up to 99 PQRI registries, which you can use for Clinical

add-on, you can now easily assess possible oral health outcomes, such as the
risk of caries, for your patients based on automatic calculations or
manuallyspecified criteria. Outcome surveys can help you deliver quality oral care, and provide recommendations for

an online form, you receive real-time data validation and rules for completing the
form, and the necessary patient information is automatically uploaded
from Dentrix Enterprise to Outcome and inserted into the appropriate fields of the form. The Outcome service is provided by
Quintiles.
The definitions for the following have been changed, so you can enter more information for
those definitions:• Allergies – You can now have an unlimited number of allergies, which you can attach to
patient records as medical alerts.• Medical alerts – The medical alerts definition from previous versions is now called “Medical Alerts/Problems.” You can have an unlimited
number of medical alerts, which you can attach to patient records.
• Medications – You can now have an unlimited number of medications, which you can attach to
patient records as medical alerts.
Selecting Government Reporting Options – When you add a new patient or an account, the Family File provides
two new options for government reporting: you can record a patient’s
ethnicity and a value for a user-defined status (your practice can specify the use
of this status).
Batch Insurance Payments - When entering insurance payments for multiple claims from one check or electronic funds
transfer (EFT), you can now edit a claim and split a primary claim, enter
adjustments to be posted automatically, and enter negative payments as

If you are using the Dentrix Enterprise HL7 interface with your medical system, these new statuses in the Family File will
sync through HL7. HL7 is the international standard for the exchange
of healthcare information.
835 EOB Import - This fee-based feature allows you to import an 835 Explanation
of Benefits (EOB) Remittance to enter payments for multiple claims. The 835
EOB Import saves your staff time by eliminating data entry associated with mailed paper EOBs and will attempt to
automatically reconcile the payments in the file to the claims in the database. If no match is found, you can manually link the
EOB to the claim. You can use the 835 EOB Import regardless of the electronic
claims system that you use, as long as you obtain a Standard X12 835 File from each
payor. For more information about signing up, contact your sales
representative today.
Medical Alerts – Managing medical alerts for patients is different. You can now electronically record, modify, and retrieve a patient’s active
medical alerts and medical alert history (including modifications) over an extended period of time and for multiple encounters.
Similar to previous versions, medical alerts can consist of alerts/problems,
medications/prescriptions, and allergies, but you can now change the status (active/inactive)
of a medical alert. You can now attach a reaction to an allergy and attach a severity to an
alert/problem or allergy. You can now view medical alert history too.
Also, a Medical Alerts button has been added to the Appointment Book and Ledger toolbars, and
a menu option has been added to the File menus of those modules.
Note: In the Office Manager, from the Letters window, double-click a letter to open the
Patient Report View dialog box. If you click the Alerts search button, the Select Medical Alerts
dialog box that appears is the same as in previous versions (the new dialog box is not
used).

Notes window, which you can access from the Patient Chart (and from other
modules).
Medical Alerts , Allergies, and Medications - You can now have an unlimited number of items for medical alerts, allergies, and medications in Practice Definitions, and a
search field has been added to make finding a definition easy. Also, you can
now easily add medical alerts, allergies, and medications when editing the list for a patient from the Select Medical Alerts
dialog box, and each patient can have up to 255 medical alerts, allergies, and
medications attached to his or her record.
Patient Portal – You can now provide patients with online access to their clinical information,
including lab test results, medical alerts/problems, medications/prescriptions, and
allergies. The Patient Portal settings affect all clinics. Patient Portal is an add-on that can be
purchased separately and is a third-party service that is provided by Updox.
Restricting Access to Clinical Note Templates – When setting up security
rights for a user, only if the new “Clinical Notes, Template Setup” option is
selected can that user access the clinical note template setup options to add, edit, and delete templates, template
categories, and prompts for templates.

you to review medical history for a patient, from the Medical History Review dialog box, you can now select the type of
pain scale to use when entering a patient’s pain level.
Patient Health Exchange – You can now export and import various sets of information for a
patient’s reference and to exchange with other healthcare professionals. The CCD or CCR
(import only) file that is exchanged contains a summary of clinical information from a patient’s
most recent visit, laboratory test results, medical alerts/problems, and medications.
Entering Patient Health Assessments – You can now electronically record,
modify, and retrieve a patient’s height, weight, and blood pressure. Also,
Dentrix Enterprise can automatically calculate and display the body mass
index (BMI) of a patient based on that patient’s height and weight.
Surfaces in Ledger and Ledger–Treatment Plan View - In the Ledger and Ledger - Treatment Plan view, there is now a
column for displaying treatment surfaces for any procedure posted that requires a
surface.
Clinical Decision Support – While you are working with appointments or prescriptions in
the Ledger, Chart, or Treatment Planner, automated notifications may appear and
provide information and care suggestions. You can customize what these clinical decision notifications say and the rules that control
where and when the notifications appear for all clinics. The rules are based on data from
specified medical alerts/problems, medications/prescriptions, allergies, diagnoses, patient demographics, and/or laboratory test
results.
Scheduling Events – You can now schedule an event (a non-patient
“appointment”) to block out time or close an operatory in the Appointment Book for a day or up to four weeks. You can schedule events for staff meetings, vacations, holidays, and other reasons.
You can set up an event to repeat at regular intervals (a series).
Extra Patient Identifiers on Title Bars - There is now a clinic setting that allows you to have Dentrix Enterprise display a patient’s birth date and age on the title
bar of patient-specific modules (except for the Family File), such as the Ledger and
Patient Chart. From the Clinic Information dialog box, go to the Optional Settings tab
to enable this feature.
Lab Test Results – In Dentrix Enterprise, you can now store laboratory test results that have been
received in an HL7 format.
Rescheduling Events Using the Pin Board – In the Appointment Book, along with the new event scheduling feature, you
can quickly move a partial-day or all-day event to a different day by using the pin board: drag the event to the pin board,
and then drag it to a new day and/or time on the schedule.
Patient -Is-Late -for-Appointment Indicator - There is a new clinic setting
that allows you to have an indicator appear on appointments when a patient is late. You can turn this feature on and off
and customize it by clinic. This feature uses the scheduled time of an
appointment, the selection of a specified appointment status, and a specified grace period to determine if a patient is late for
his or her appointment.
Meaningful Use Reporting – The following reports have been added:
• The new Meaningful Use Measure Calculation List displays the results for all percentage-based
measures that have been entered for eligible providers (EP).
• You can now attach medical encounters to a patient’s record. The encounters are stored as
AMA-CPT and/or ICD-9-CM codes. Medical encounters can be used to determine clinical quality measures on the new Clinical Quality
Measures List, which can be sent electronically.• You can add immunizations to a patient’s
record. Immunization records can be used to determine clinical quality measures on the new
Clinical Quality Measures List, to determine which patients appear on the new Filtered
Patient List, and to determine which patients appear on the new Patient Reminder List.
• The new Filtered Patient List displays a list of patients according to information from their
medical alerts/problems, medications, prescriptions, demographics, and laboratory test
results.• The new Patient Reminder List displays a list of
patients who need reminders for preventative or follow-up care according to information from
their appointments, continuing care, medical alerts/problems, medications, prescriptions, demographics, and laboratory test results.
Note: Before you can run these reports, you must set up the Meaningful Use feature.
Setting up Operatories – In conjunction with the new event scheduling feature, you can now customize available hours for individual operatories in your office.
Appointment Statistics Report - The new Appointment Statistics Report in the DXOne Reporting module provides
statistics for late appointments, on-time appointments, wait/will call
appointments, broken appointments, appointments that remained in specified
statuses for a specified length of time, and appointment durations based on specified
statuses.
Important: The report does not work for purged appointments. Also, the accuracy
of the report relies on the underlying functionality of the previously mentioned new clinic setting that tracks appointment
status changes to determine when a patient is considered late for any
appointment.
Encryption and Hash Values – You can now create an encrypted CCD file and decrypt a CCD
or CCR file. These files satisfy the Meaningful Use criteria for the integrity and encryption of
electronic health information.
Using Medical Consultation Notes – Now, if a medical consultation note has been added to a patient’s record in the
Family File, but no release date has been entered, you will not be able to schedule
appointments for that patient in the Appointment Book until the release date
is entered.
Security Rights - There are new security rights to control changing the option that indicates if a patient is late for his or her
appointment, completing duplicate procedures, and accessing Office Manager
reports. Additionally, the security rights for clinics (from the Office Manager and
the DXOne Reporting module) have been modified to allow you to access only the
patient records in and the DXOne Reporting module reports of clinics you
have the rights to access. As part of this change, there is now a My Clinics filter in the Select Patient dialog
box, so you can access patient records for not just the clinic you are logged on to or all clinics but the group of clinics that you
have been granted rights to access.
Miscellaneous – The following features have been added or changed:
• The Patient Notes Report has been updated to include the new information that can be
attached to medical alerts.• Dentrix Enterprise now uses the holidays in a
clinic’s schedule as part of the Automated Measure Calculation requirement for
Meaningful Use.• In the Family file, you can now specify how a
patient prefers to be contacted.• When you are adding or editing a medical
alert/problem, you can create a Public Health Surveillance record. The record is stored as a file
that is formatted for HL7 and includes information relating to diagnoses. Eventually
these messages will be sent to and received by the CDC to help catch disease outbreaks. For
this release, you can only manually upload the file.
• You can now provide education resources to a patient according to that patient’s medical
alerts/problems, medications/prescriptions, allergies, and laboratory test results. This
feature uses the database of patient education topics that are available on the MedlinePlus
Connect website.• You can now specify the smoking status of a
patient.
Understanding the new Document Center Window – The Document Center
window has a new look. It has been enhanced and provides you with new and improved tools to help your office
become paperless.

you can quickly search for a view by using a new search field in the Select View
dialog box
Other Miscellaneous features have been added or changed:
• From the Medical History Review dialog box, you can now access the Patient Health
Assessment dialog box.• You can now have patient health assessments,
prescriptions, and medical alerts copied automatically to patients’ clinical notes. The
setting that controls this affects all clinics.• A patient’s mobile phone number from the Family File is now available as a data field for
letters. Also, you can now filter which patients are included in a letter merge by the presence or absence of an email address in the Family
File.
Acquiring Documents – You can easily import documents and images into the Document Center, using a scanner or
digital camera.
Document Center Document Type Templates - You can now create
document type templates to make importing documents into the Document
Center faster. When you acquire a document you can select a template,
which automatically assigns a type and description to that document so that you do not have to enter that information for
every type of document you routinely import (for example, EOBs). Additionally, if you attempt to delete a document type,
and if that type is assigned to any patient’s document or to a template, you
must choose a replacement type.
You can now copy any of the five standard dental coverage tables or any portion of those coverage tables to specified insurance plans.
Using the Document Center Printer Driver – With the new Document Center
printer driver, wherever printing is available (from a program or website),
you can export documents to the Document Center with or without any
Dentrix Enterprise modules being open.
A new security right controls whether or not you can change any of the options for running the
Treatment Case Report. There are new rights for managing lab tests, medical encounters, and
immunizations. There are also new rights that control access to the new Meaningful Use reports (Clinical Quality Measures, Filtered
Patient List, Meaningful Use Measure Calculation, and Patient Reminder List).
