I have decided upon the Tropical Themed energy drink I came up with, this is the one I liked most out of my other 3 ideas (sports drink, animal based drink and music drink). The tropical drink is the one I had most ideas for and looked the most appealing to myself, and because I fit within the target audience I chose than that suggests that the target audience will be interested in my drink.

Name & SloganThe names I have come up with for the tropical drink are:·Toucan – I think it is simple and effective. I do not like long names as such with drinks because when you are asking for one at a bar for example its nice to keep them short and simple like ‘relentless’ and ‘monster’. I also thought it would work well with the theme of tropical because the bird is found in tropical countries. It would also work nice with the design on the packaging and on the adverts because I could place a picture of the bird next to the name with a tropical background like a beach or rainforest. Slogan – Toucan play that game. This is an interesting slogan that is a play with words, it works well with the name and the advert idea.

·Caribbean twist or Hawaiian breeze – These are both names that I thought worked with the tropical theme because they both are places that have tropical aspects and are hot. They would also work nice with the colour scheme because I could add bright colours around the name and a nice tropical background again.

·Koala - I thought of this idea whilst thinking about the advert; I wanted the energy drink to sponsor music festivals and events because the target audience is interested in going to these events in summer. But because the drink is tropical I wanted it to be festivals abroad such as Hideout. Oliver Heldens is a very popular music artist and his song called Koala is one of my favorites. So I thought naming the drink Koala would be a good idea because it fits with the tropical theme and also the advert Idea of having Oliver Heldens playing the song in the advert and everyone enjoying the festival whilst drinking the drink.

·The name ‘Twist’ and ‘Breeze’ would also work nice against another name to be a different drink but for the same brand. For example there is Lucozade sport, Lucozade revive and Lucozade energy. This would work nicely with Koala and Toucan and their been a ‘Toucan breeze’ which would include more blue and green colours and include flavours like pineapple. And ‘Toucan Twist’ which would be more orange and pink colours and would include passion fruit and berries. ‘Koala Cola’ would also be and interesting one and would be cola flavoured.

I have my final names to choose from either ‘Koala’ or ‘Toucan’ and I have come up with Advertisement ideas for both of them.

TV Advert Ideas – ‘Koala’

For my advert I want it to be focused on Oliver Heldens performing his song in the music festival and one of the cans of Koala will be on his DJ set, then the camera turning to focus on the crowd having a really good time and then someone opens a can of ‘koala twist’ and someone else opens a can of ‘Koala breeze’ and then the song goes to the chorus and the camera moves up to show a birds eye view of the festival and the can appears on screen. After this happens it will say Koala Twist and then the slogan.

I really like the idea of this advert because it’s simple and effective, doesn’t say much about the drink but clearly shows that everyone loves it, and because my target audience enjoys summer and festivals that happen throughout summer they will immediately be drawn to the advert to see what product is being advertised in it.

The packaging for Koala would be very tropical with a picture of a Koala behind the title name. It would be blue and yellow colours with surrounding beaches and tropical themes. I want the packaging to be very unique and easily recognized by the public so when people see a certain colour or image they immediately associate it with the drink.

TV Advert ideas – ‘Toucan’For this advert I want people to be going through a rainforest on a hike to find animals and they look really tired and have drank their last bit of water. A toucan then flies over and drops a can of toucan down to a person and when they open it they really like the drink and are suddenly refreshed. The toucan then flies onto a branch, winks at the camera and a voice says ‘Toucan play that game’ this advert is also very simple.

The packaging for Toucan would be also very tropical but with a picture of a Toucan next to the name and the beak either with the name on or surrounding the name, or maybe even between the top and bottom of the beak. The colours would be bright summery colours, blue and yellow for the breeze and pinks and oranges for the Twist. However I still want the packaging to be recognised as one brand ‘Toucan’ the packaging will include fruits on it and maybe a palm tree to suggest the tropical theme.

Slogan IdeasToucan Play it. Toucan Drink it.Toucan Love it.

Page 9: Design pro forma

Copy/Script development

I have decided that I like the ‘Toucan’ name best and the idea of the Koala advert best, I am going to mix both ideas together to create one idea. I am going to use the name toucan but keep the concept of the music festival advert. The can is going to sponsor a music festival, this idea will be really effective and good towards my target audience, because they will be interested in the drink before they even see it because it works like a hypodermic syringe theory, because other people their age are drinking it at the festival and really enjoying it they will immediately think they will think the same and really like it, as well with Oliver Heldens being a celebrity endorsement this will also encourage them.

ColoursBreeze – blue, green, yellowTwist – orange, pink, yellow

Poster Advert Ideas The can will be placed in the middle of the page with a Toucan flying. It will be a really colourfull poster with a lot of fruits and flowers to make it look tropical. The poster will not be overcrowded too much though because I think that brings the attention off the can and onto the things in the background rather then the foreground. I have researched into tropical drinks, as I have not seen or heard of any energy drinks that are tropical, and I have come across Rubicon which includes some of the ideas I have for my own, that it is very colourfull and fruity.

Target AudienceMy target audience will be both genders, but because I am making different drinks out of the one name like ‘twist’ and ‘breeze’ one might be more target at one gender then the other. For example breeze is going to be more blue coloured based which a boy would be more attracted to. Women do not usually mind what colour the drink is but men do. For example men are targeted at drinking Lucozade and they brought out a ‘pink lemonade’ one and the bottle is pink, therefore women are attracted to it, however, a man would buy a different flavor because they do not get attracted to that certain colours. My drinks will hopefully be attracted by both because I want both genders to be interested. The audience will be young and aged between 16-25 because these are the people who usually go to a shop to buy an energy drink and usually are the type to go to music festivals each year and be interested in the latest music. Whereas people above this age do not usually like the thought of energy drinks and the ingredients included., they have usually also grown out of music festivals or have lost interest because they simply do not have time to take of work to go to them. The audience will be middle- low class because higher class will usually buy more healthy drinks or more expensive, these people are also not really the type to be interested in the certain type of music at festivals as well as attending them.

Font/Colour Scheme development

The first one I saw on the left was a brush type font, I liked this one because it looked different and I think it would look really nice on the can and blend in with the theme, although I do not know whether it will blend in to much and not stick out, I might have to do something with the colour to make it stand out more. I really liked this font because I thought it would fit nicely with the tropical theme again, although it is quite stereotypical in the sense of associating it with a tropical theme, however this could be a good thing because it will be easily remembered.

I thought I would look for a few more simple fonts also. This font reminds me of a paint brush, it looks like the lettering has being painted which reminds me of tribes. I think this would look nice on the can as well.

This is my least favorite out of the 5 because I think it is to simple and would look boring compared to the rest, but I am going to keep it to see what it would look like when placing them on the can.

I like that this one is simple but still has a remembrance to it, I would remember the font if I saw it somewhere else, which I want people to do.

Page 11: Design pro forma

Font/Colour Scheme development

I like both of these colour schemes because they match the other name I am giving them both which is Toucan Breeze and Toucan Twist. The twist colour scheme will be the warmer colours and the Colder colours will be breeze.

Page 12: Design pro forma

Font/Colour Scheme development

This will be my font that I use for the ingredients and smaller text on my cans of Toucan. The colours will also be the darker colour of my colour scheme. This is because they stand out more with the darker colour but I don’t want them black.

These were the two darker colours of the colour scheme, however, I prefer the pink colour even darker because I think the bright pink will look to harsh.

Breeze and Twist will be in this font that I have chosen and this colour. I like the font because it fits with the other fonts and is still different from the main title. When Twist and Breeze is placed below toucan it will stand out because of the different font type. The fonts are quite feminine which may make it more of a girl drink, however I am still going to include males in the advert and pictures.

Page 13: Design pro forma

Font/Colour Scheme development

I think the colours work nicely together and the text fits with the main body text. The two different cans will be the same design but with both different colour schemes. I aimed the breeze to suit the male audience more and the twist to suit the female audience more, however they’re still targeted at both genders. I might have to change the colour of the Twist and Breeze when it comes to choosing my background colour because they may be to similar.

Product packaging development

Use this space to document your product development.

There should be lots of variety here.

You can produce mock ups and flat plans.

You can test different designs.

I like these colours and designs best out of the others I was trying out. The colours work together nicely and were similar to the colour scheme I originally came up with. I made the background blue lighter because the main text didn’t stand out with the harsh background. These designs are only basic and do not yet include the slogan, ingredients and nutrition information.

After designing the different layouts I decided to choose one but when designing the Twist can also I decided to change the fruit and made the breeze lemon and lime and the Twist Orange.

Page 16: Design pro forma

Product packaging developmentI have narrowed my layouts down to both of these ones, I wanted to see how it looked on the can so I placed the flat plan ideas onto the can. I created the flat plan by using to rectangles to place ideas in that would be around the can and the little box is for the writing on the back of the can, mostly including the ingredients. This gave me a rough idea of where to put everything. As you can see you can only see the front of the can so it is a good idea to produce the flat plan so you can add more stuff round the edges.

I like this design because there isn’t a lot of white space, it is filled up nicely of the main image and the pictures of the ingredients (fruit) the colours also work together really nicely. Blue is for the name of this Toucan can (breeze) and the oranges work nicely with the beak of the Toucan.

I do not like how the Toucan doesn’t really blend into the can like the oranges do and the colour blue I have layed over the top, but when I have more time to spend on the end design this would out better.

I like the flat plan and can design of that layout because the toucans beak goes round the main text, but from the front of the can it doesn’t look that good because of the beak so I decided to text what the toucan looks like underneath the main text and it also works nicely there.

Page 17: Design pro forma

development I thought lemon and lime worked better with the breeze drink because of the colours and orange worked better with twist because of the same reason. I like how their isn’t much space left to fill because I wanted a drink that had lots of colour to fit with the theme tropical. I do like simple energy drink cans but I didn’t want my product to be like that. A simple one with a tropical theme sounds boring and I tried it and didn’t like any design. I came up with the slogan ‘revive yourself’ and added them to the flat plan because I thought it was simple but effective. Its short which makes is easy to remember but also fits with the advert ideas of giving you energy to stay up at festivals, which is reviving yourself.

Task 6: Advert Development

What I did:The first thing I did was find an image that went with my theme ‘tropical’ I wanted a beach picture because I thought it would look good behind my can. I think it worked well so I added the slogan below the can. This still looked quite plain and boring.

I then added the scan code for mobiles to get quick access to our page on face book to the bottom left, they usually go in one of the corners of the page. I also added the hideout festival logo because my drink sponsors there festival and I wanted the audience to be alerted to this as well. After I added both of these I realised that there was a lot of work at the bottom of the advert and not the top so I repositioned the slogan to the top of the page.

I wanted to add more text onto the page to make it more interesting and have more for the audience to look at so I changed the sponsoring position to down the side of the hideout logo. I decided to add ‘Introducing… Toucan energy’ but the text didn’t stand out very well so I put a low opacity rectangle below it. I still wasn’t happy with the pink because it stood out to much among everything else so I changed it to a light yellow. I then blurred the edge of the box slightly because it blended in more this way.

Another thing I changed because it didn’t stand out enough was the slogan. I put a light blue stroke around it so it didn’t look like it was behind the background image, because it did before I changed it.

Page 21: Design pro forma

Task 6: Advert Development

I changed around the text in the yellow box around the page but it didn’t look as good as the bottom because it didn’t fit properly. I then just moved everything up slightly so the whole page was full and then I was happy with the final piece.

I have seen adverts like mine that inspired me to do a realistic background, such as Tropicana, which was also a tropical drink so I researched into it because it would really help mine look like a professional advert.

The Tropicana advert ad a background of a sunset landscape with tree’s surrounding, which is similar to my beach background. There's is more simple which much less text which is good and effective but I thought a good advert needs to have a scan code in because the product is then more known and the word about It spreads on the social networking sites. I also thought adding the bit about hideout will be beneficial towards my audience because it will not only tell them it sponsors hideout it will also suggest that it is a drink for that certain target audience and as soon as the logo catches their eye it will immediately make them want to know what's sponsoring them. Strengths and weakness’What I like about my advert is that the colour scheme really suits the advert and the product, they work well together. It took me along time to come up with the colour because I think this is really essential to get an audience interested in the product because the first thing you notice when you look at a piece of paper is the colour of it. The slogan on this advert doesn’t catch your eye, however I have made the advert quite busy and interesting for an audience to look at it, which will usually make them read the advert so this is a huge problem but is something that I could try alter and change more.

Page 22: Design pro forma

I liked the idea of the background being tropical on my first advert so used that idea for my second advert. I didn’t want them to look to different though because then they would not be recognised as the same product, so for now I have left them the same but with a different background, both still tropical but a different colour scheme to suit the audience. Twist is for more of a female audience and Breeze is more of a male audience.

I do not like how ‘Revive yourself’ is blending in with the background and does not stand above it enough. I liked the colours though because they were the same colours as the first advert but switched around so that the stroke was pink and main colour was blue and on breeze the stroke was blue and the main colour was pink.

The background colours are strong as well so that the can doesn’t stand above it enough. I might either blur the background slightly or alter the colour balance.

I don’t like the white boxes at the bottom of the advert I think that they ruin the overall colorful and tropical effect that it gives of. I might still keep the ‘hideout’ logo but delete the rest of the writing that the white box contains and get rid of the white box. I might also see what it looks like without the scan code and just add a face book and twitter icon for audience interaction. I will do this to the other advert also because I want them to look similar so they are recognised as the same but different so they aren’t to similar and boring.

Another thing I could improve is making the can in line with the bridge because it is slightly off and doesn’t look very good.

I changed the boxes at the bottom so that there were not white and instead of the scan code I placed a twitter and facebook icon, I think they look butter but now the hideout logo doesn’t catch your eye, which it did before and I wanted this to happen because it was an essential thing for the audience to see first because the audience I am looking for are people of the age group and interest as people that go to this festival, so when they see the logo they are immediately interested, so I think the white background might be essential.

I also changed around the placement of writing to see what worked best and what didn’t. I moved the twitter and facebook icons to the top left of the page and moved the hideout logo to the middle. This helps the logo stand out more than it did but still not enough. The icons at the top are hidden and they ruin the effect of the slogan and make this less noticeable. So I think I might stick with the original layout but change the writing.

Page 23: Design pro forma

I decided that I wanted to try out something that looked more simple, without a busy background like my other two ideas. There are not a lot of ideas I could come up with without the page having to much white space so I thought of having fruit on the page to fill up some space. This idea actually worked out well and as you can see from the image on the right, there isn’t a lot of white space. I added a gradient to the bottom of the page as well to add the two audience parts into the advert but also added it to fill up a bit of white space and make the page more colourfull which is what I intended to do from the beginning.

I like this idea because it is nice and simple but it does make you immediately think that it is fruity and tropical still, as well as my other advert and everything on this advert catches your eye and stands out. Whereas with my first idea some of the text wasn’t noticeable because of the busy backgrounds. The thing I do not like about this advert is that it reminds me of a smoothie advert like innocent because they contain mainly fruit they usually have fruit all over their adverts. However I did do some research into fizzy drinks that contain fruit flavours like Rubicon and they have fruit on their adverts also, so this actually isn’t a big problem. There are no energy drinks that are usually fruit interpreted but I wanted mine to be different from the rest of them, this way people will want to have the drink because it is something new. Whereas Red Bull and Monster and similar and people have tasted these sort of energy drink flavours, but my advert itself suggests that it is different just from the pictures.

The strengths of this advert are the colour, which makes us assume that it is fruity and healthy, unlike ordinary energy drinks. It also suggests that it is ok for children under 16 and pregnant women, which it is because it is slow releasing energy and not to high in caffeine. Another thing I like about the colour is that as soon as you turn the page you want to see what the advert is about because colour to the target audience I have is essential. Another strength is that you can see everything clearly and it is a neat presented advert unlike the other one I produced which is really busy. A weakness of this advert was at first the white background which I have changed to a very light blue which is hardly noticeable but it makes it look better because the white isn’t to harsh. Another weakness is the can looks like it’s been placed there because there isn’t room anywhere else on the page, I think this would improve when I have my can designed properly and I have used the correct tools to fit it into the page correctly, for example the blur tool round the edge so that the edges aren’t to harsh.
