Task 6: Advert Development

Firstly I want to start with the audience overview and how it has changed my advert. The initial audience was to be teenagers and upwards however as my product is football based it made sense to add some British reign, and carry the English lion to introduce patriotism and the English national football team also display the lions on the shirt.

Secondly, I decided to have a range of fonts to display different things on my magazine advertisement. There are softer fonts for the URL links and bolder fonts for the slogan and title of the drink. The use of the soft and bold fonts still have the sports conations to them so it is recognisable and easy to read.

Finally, I enlisted the use of a crest to simulate the badge on a football shirt and used the colours related to the football team I was basing this advert on – Liverpool. The crest was chosen to be black as I think the white writing makes it stand out more and also adds to the boldness. The black and red also contrast nicely but still brings the main focus of the crest and what’s inside it.

I have made further progress by adding a gradient onto the background layer and also to the lions. The font has changed on the footballs also. Another change I have made is to the title of the product, there is a crowd shot behind the numbers and lettering which gives it some texture. Behind the crest I have also added a gradient that looks like football stripes on a shirt so simple things are still contributing to the full on football effect.

Task 6: Advert Development

For the additional information, also regarding what goes into the product I used footballs instead of an elipse tool to keep the theme of football running through without it being offset. The football also doesn’t have much opacity so therefore the wording can show through clearer.

I also wanted to point out the emboss used on the crest to make it look 3D, this use of this draws the attention to it better in almost a leading line as to where you need to read of look next. It also makes it look realistic like it would on a football shirt, everything is being modelled to influence everything football.

Now that I have a gradient on the background I can make this advert again and easily change the colour to blue, yellow or red to represent the different flavours or projects of the drink. It is also easier to change the tones, I can have the background dark red leading up to a brighter red. I have also changed the harshness on the gradient around the crest to add to the existing 3D look.

I decided to add a gradient to the lion(s) because I thought that it would give an edgy look and also introduce more colour. The gradient has also worked well because it doesn’t colour the full lion, it has a blend to it and also fades out around the tail and the mane – the big features.

Task 6: Final Advert

What are the technical qualities of your work? For this advert I have used a lot of colour overlay and soft light to balance certain objects. I have also used the custom shape tool to create the shield/crest and the magic wand tool to get rid of any unwanted colour and white space. From the outside of the crest I have used the emboss tool which makes the crest look three dimensional therefore it doesn’t blend into the background. The fonts I collected were from Da font and I selected square fonts and old school as they carry a sport theme I also spaced the fonts and made them bigger to stand out, it took me time to figure out where they would sit and how they would look compared to the other fonts. Another technique that I used was the gradient tool, there is a contrast of dark to light in the background as the crest is so dark, I could change the colour contrast around to see if it makes a massive difference or not. There are not big technical aspects to my work but ones that translate into the colour scheme and show off the important elements which would be the can design (when it is on) and the title of the product, the two main things that people look for.

What are the aesthetic qualities of your work? The good aesthetic qualities of my work are; that the crest implements everything that I want my product to be about, it is also unique compared to existing sports drinks, as I am focusing on one sport. The crest also has a nice strong shape and complements the size and style of the background. Looking at Lucozade and Powerade I think that I have created something that is completely my own and something that would break into my intended market. Secondly the overlay of the crowd picture underneath the title is clever as it gives more information to inspire what the product is about, it also adds more colour and looks pleasing from a distance and up close so therefore would work on an advertisement. Thirdly, I think that all aspects of the advertisement give it a sporty feel, it is authentic and has rich colour. I have included everything that surrounds football to implement my desired product, this includes – footballs, British lions and a football crowd. I also think that the font is also pleasing, there are a mixture of fonts which all give off the same sport vibe and get across the information clearly. The gradient on the British lions adds to the red effect as the colours I am using are based upon my favourite football team. The gradient doesn’t cover the full lion which has more qualities than if the lion was fully red as it would spoil the edgy tone as too many block colours isn’t what I was going for. I have used a lot of the gradient tool to make things look more three dimensional, I have used a lot of this on the top of the crest I think that this accompanies the look of making it stand out and bolder than the rest.

Task 6: Advert Evaluation

Page 6: Design for advertsing 1

What areas of planning and development worked well? The area that I feel worked well the most was working on the mind maps, it encouraged me to spiral all the ideas I had for one specific theme I had in mind since the beginning. The other area that went well was the idea generation, even though I had one idea already – I could experiment with my creativity and discuss different options. The development process was also interesting as I came on in leaps and bounds after trying out different ways of showing off my idea. I tried mocking up a football shirt, warping different shapes and trying out all the different aspects to football until I found something that I was happy with. Although it took some time, the main development part of the poster worked well the most, it is something I feel is my best work. I didn’t pay attention to my mind maps during the development which I should have done but even without looking at planning I have created something that meets the purpose and only needs minor improvements. The mood boards that I created worked for me as I could collect lots of images and slogans to express my ideas positively, the images I collected were mainly of footballs and football players from sports adverts to get an idea of how they are portrayed. It wasn’t a major part in development but the opportunities handout that I had to fill in was useful in the area of planning because it gave me chance to remember that I had to step out of my comfort zone and be more creative. The overall planning process was a big help as I get one idea too quickly, this helped me to be open with ideas and look at the possibilities I could take on.

Page 7: Design for advertsing 1

Are there opportunities for further development of your work? The first development that I can see is the footballs on the right hand side, I wanted to use them to finalise the look of football but I don’t think that they look right with the wording on top of them plus it looks offset to the rest of the ad compared to boldness. To also further develop my work I would use a gradient around the crest rather than one part to keep the rest of the crest looking bold and 3D. I would also make sure that the positioning of everything is in good order because the crest is a little one sided and I like things to be central. I like that I have used British lions to brand the product but I think it would look more exciting to have the lions facing each other – it then looks like the lions are roaring at the can (the three lions on the England football shirt are all facing the same way). On top of the crest the gradient doesn’t go all around the top which is quite unnoticeable however it looks untidy to me and I should have paid more attention to it. I am quite happy with the development process of the advertisement but there are little tweaks to be made until I think that I can’t do anymore. I chose to add the lines in the background to replicate a football shirt, I used a reflective angle to create the pattern but the stripes should be closer together to make the majority of the product tighter. Although it doesn’t show on the final product – to further develop my work I would choose better fonts to go with the theme and also to work alongside my colour scheme, the fonts I had chosen were quite hard to read although they fitted my idea at the time. The main development for me that I need to focus on is placement of objects, if I want the poster to be bold I should implement that more I feel that the use of the footballs is too soft using the soft light tool and looks irrelevant to the rest of the work.

Are your final pieces are fit for purpose?I do feel that my final piece is fit for purpose as it fulfils my ideas well. My poster is also good enough to attract people to buy the drink, it has bold colours and different tones which catch the eye. Because my theme is sport, by having a bold and unique design, helps in making it easier to appeal to the target audience and analyse the purpose of having a sports drink. I feel that because I have come so far in this process, that the purpose has many expectations and I have created something that I would be proud of to display. The purpose of this task was to create a poster that would appeal to the new energy drink I am creating I could see this poster being displayed on billboards as it has an influence on football which is part of a big market right now. My final piece has left me with an open mind with how to improve although it fits the purpose. Back to my own work, the task was to create something that would look like it would sell and appeal to what was planned, I think that I have fit the purpose here by thinking out of the box and having certain ideas that may have not worked on something else. I also had my own purpose which was to base the colour scheme on football shirts and the way they used their colours, it was easy to pick the colour scheme and what would work because the majority of colours were red, I knew that I wanted to have a bold red for the background and use black too as I feel it is a statement colour. It has a certain quality that I know fits the purpose because it has a selling point which was intended from the start, that quality that I think is definitely fit for purpose is the crest, it is the first thing you look at and it already has all the information inside it – from a far distance the crest is the main focus of the final piece until the can design is on there. The aesthetic qualities overall fit the bill as the more pleasing it is to look at, the more purpose it has to sell.

Page 8: Design for advertsing 1

What areas of planning and development could have done with more work? Going back to the beginning of the unit I think that the initial research of existing products could have done with more work as I focused on some parts more than others which hasn’t helped me when progressing onto this stage of the project. Although I think my mind map had the best stage of planning I think that I also focused on one too many specifics instead of paying attention to what a mind map was helping me to do. In hindsight, because I had one theme and idea stuck in my head my initial ideas (task 3) suffered as I didn’t put enough effort in to the other ideas which then could hinder my grade for that piece. My research before creating the advert wasn’t up to scratch as I had to source images there and then which was also time consuming. The planning of the advert didn’t have much thought, I had too many ideas that I couldn’t get creative with so I had to change my thinking.

What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product? I think that the development stages had a good effect on the final product, every time I went back to it, it was beginning to look more and more like an actual poster. The development stages also taught me new techniques which I could then apply to different areas of the product which then built on the overall look. As the development stage went on I began to be more aware of the effect of the techniques and how I could get creative with balancing more ideas into the final product. I think that it also has had a positive effect for future reference too because I can look at different designs and techniques in depth to use at this stage again. The final product has a good effect to it as the development stages have shown what I am capable of and what I need to improve on. I changed my ideas during the development stages including my colour scheme which I feel helped in the long run because it shows of the important bits of my product better. During my development I looked at different ways to use little bits to make up for the overall effect including the title and the feel of the product, e.g. the crowd normally is referred to as the 12 th man which is what I have tried to do. So overall I think that the development stages had a huge effect on the way my product has turned out to be, I have been more creative and thought about the way it needs to be and picked out my own faults.

Task 7: Product Development

For my first attempt this was something I came up with, all black and white. The font that I had chosen to use was Slim Extreme, it wasn’t too extreme and was clear to read.

The picture on the product is dark or includes minimal tones which only shows some light.

There is also lots of writing, including a big slogan which could be chopped into two. The wording is in capitals which doesn’t help when reading because it is not clear.

The picture is quite small and there is a lot of spaced to be filled around the extra writing this could be done with a bigger picture or an overlay behind the text.

There is also lots of writing during this space which is not what should be on a can as no one reads a lot of the additional information and it needs to be shortened.

I have also started to introduce placement on where a barcode and nutritional information would sit with a mixture of bold white fonts and a clearer one.

Page 10: Design for advertsing 1

Task 7: Product DevelopmentI have made very different changes to the first design I have made, I have changed the background, fonts and overlay. I added more colour to this one and made it more football themed instead of bits dotted around the page.

I have made use of the extra space around the page and have copied over the crowd background from the poster. I have decided against putting the crowd picture behind the text as I waned the title to stand out on its own this time.

I have used some of the same fonts from the advert but have used them in a different way, I have also used the rulers in a better way as they have helped me to align the wording and keep things equal when it comes to putting the design on the can.

The trophies on the can design represent football more than what the last design did and fills up the page better.

I decided to change the look on the product because I did not like the look of having a black can and something that wasn’t fulfilling my expectations. The red is a vibrant colour and like the advert, gives off the feel of football – relating to football teams and the colour of their shirts. I felt it was appropriate to keep the same font for the title and for the slogan. I thought that using a black font would look tacky on the white background and not fit, however it does work alongside the rest of the white writing.

I have included some nutritional information, but I do not have enough room to put additional information on yet so I could make a few changes. I am still looking at the way Lucozade show their information.

Page 11: Design for advertsing 1

This particular colour also does represent a certain flavour of the drink, but the colour brings out certain aspects which are important. I have picked out some made up flavours; Guava Jean, Hazelnut, Pinocolada, Red Berry Crush.

The colour picker gave me a range of reds to work with, I chose a bright red.

The can design is quite simple but will look effective and better when it is put on a can (on Photoshop).

I have used the bevel and emboss tool again to give the trophies a better feel than being a block colour. To keep the bevel subtle I have pulled down the opacity down over half way. The trophies are still red and the transformation works better on the inside.

Due to a few changes – prior to the way it would look on the can, the slogan and the flavour of the drink are at the bottom, allowing there to be a collar on the design. The slogan also looks better down at the bottom as it would spoil the effect of the trophies and also overshadow the title. I have chosen not to include the crowd picture as I didn’t want there to be too much going on. There is also some white space on the right hand side which could fit enough room for additional information.

The only black text is the slogan and flavour, it didn’t sit right with the font to be a white colour, the white font was suited to the title to keep it bold and keep it in the eye line.

Task 7: Final Packaging

Page 13: Design for advertsing 1

What are the technical qualities of your work? The technical aspects that I used were similar to the advert, I used the custom shape tool to create the trophies and then a colour overlay to make them the block white. Then I added the slogan which spread out across the five trophies, on hindsight it didn’t work properly on the way it would fit round the can so I changed the colour overlay of the trophies to red – the same colour as the background and used the bevel and emboss tool to get the shape brought forward, also doing this I brought the opacity down to soften the look. On the title I had to use a stroke as the numbers looked too flat against the background, the stroke is down to 2px and the stroke is inside rather than outside. Before changes there was going to be the same crowd picture but this time as the main background, after positioning it the packaging looked overcrowded and that’s when I decided to keep the design minimal but with the same layout. I used the simplest of tools, the move tool to get everything into place including the slogan and the five trophies. I copy and pasted the trophies to make sure that they were the same size as each other. As the nutritional information needed to be displayed somewhere appropriate on the can, I created a rectangle which was a darker shade of red to the background, this required moving the trophies again and resizing them so that it all fitted on the page.

What are the aesthetic qualities of your work?My first aesthetic quality has to be the use of the red background and the colour overlay, with the same red on top of each other I thought that it wouldn’t stand out however the bevel and emboss tool has made it look better. I also think that the trophies are a quality because they show success and the repetitive use looks better when filling the page. The page is full which is also a good quality because it shows off thee technical aspects and gives more to look at. I also like that the design of the packaging is simplistic and isn’t overshadowed or overcrowded by anything, it gives it a tight feel and makes sure that everything works together. Adding to the use of the red colour I think it is a popular colour and one that works well with white and black fonts. The use of the text goes with the football theme as the font type – Steiner is something that looks like it would go on a football shirt or on a sports energy drink. The use of the other font – Athletic is the same as the advert and carries the sport vibe, I think these fonts have helped the aesthetics of the packaging because they have an effect for sport with a mixture of old school and modern.

Task 7: Packaging Evaluation

Page 14: Design for advertsing 1

Are there opportunities for further development of your work?Firstly, for further development I would work the positioning better, because of my design being landscape the front of the can doesn’t display the title of the drink – which wouldn’t look appealing on a shelf. I would also contemplate looking at another colour for the can because the colour isn’t the original colour when on the can. To render this opportunity I can use the online colour picker to help get the correct colour and test it properly on a can. The other change I would make is putting a harder gradient on the trophies because they look faint on the can, I would have liked to multiply the designs and kept one design of the trophies white so that I could see the difference. Back to the positioning, I think that the slogan was also out of place because it doesn’t wrap the can properly however the barcode does. I could try different techniques by trying to downsize the font and the rest of the proportion to see how that would work on a can. I think that taking the crowd picture off the design was a good idea because it would look too crowded and it would mess with the other techniques when applying it to the can. Looking on hindsight and looking at the advertisement I can see my can design working alongside that. I tried a lot of things to get rid of the stripes down the side of the can but I think this is down to colour choice, next time I would like to choose a darker colour like where the nutritional information is displayed, it also gives a better tone and I can play around with the gradient more.

Are your final pieces are fit for purpose? The purpose was to create something that would appeal on a shop shelf, for my first can development I think that it fits the purpose slightly, I think that the colour makes it stand out and also the white font adds to the boldness. The design doesn’t wrap the can properly so it is a shame that it doesn’t fit the purpose for even showing the title of the drink. The final piece is appealing to me because I spent a lot of time working on it and trying different options. If I did include the other options, such as the crowd picture I don’t think it would still be fit for purpose for being too packed. My purpose was also to create a design that was appealing and also showed my creative side, with more development I can achieve this, e.g. using a cut out of a football bursting through the design. If a few changes were to be fixed with another opportunity I think that my final piece would be fully fit for purpose. My design also has some qualities which are purposeful, it shows the target audience and also shows the theme much like the advert. Although I have been critical on this part, the purpose was to make something appealing which I think worked well for me, on the flat design I created a good final piece and tried new ideas which is developing my creative side. I also wish that I had taken the time to be more careful about the placing as the can would have looked better and working on getting the design fitted to the can would be easier. To the original question, I don’t think that my final piece is fit for purpose, it has to many changes to be made and the design doesn’t live up to expectation on the can.

The line through the can.

Page 15: Design for advertsing 1

What areas of planning and development worked well? For this particular task, the development that worked the most for me was the beginning of the can design process, I

changed a lot of my ideas so that I could develop a final piece, I had lots of ideas that didn’t work so this gave me the chance to get one good idea. Again I referred to mind map and the type of audience that I wanted to go for, there are different types of football e.g. street football but the design didn’t appeal to me this time. I feel that the planning and development was better this time around because I worked a lot on this piece and what I could achieve compared to the last advert. The development that was also useful was having enough time to create a design, I was experimenting with techniques and layouts, this time was important as I could look at colour schemes, adding fonts in and working the slogan around the page. I also think that having the original planning and narrowing it down worked well, as I had a broad choice of flavours etc. I could pick out two or three which potentially could work and then develop it from there.

What areas of planning and development could have done with more work? I think that the mood boards could have done with more work. I had the initial mind map that was more in depth and that I could pick ideas from. I collected images for my mood board which doesn’t really tell me a lot because they are just pictures, however the pictures of footballs have given me some inspiration in different ways for when I develop my product. I also think that the most difficult part of planning this was trying to create a design that would look appealing, I feel that my overall look of the can is not up to my best standard as I didn’t draw up any ideas before working on Photoshop. I am happy with the development of my can because a lot has changed creatively, however I still feel that there is work to be done development wise, referring to the fit for purpose question because I need to get things in the right proportion to work on the can. I think that this is the biggest area of development for me but I do have time in the near future to change it and complete the design properly. I think that my planning and development for this particular design wasn’t as good as my advert because I didn’t think about it properly and didn’t have a clearer idea to start with.

What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product?I think that the development stages had a good overall effect on the final product because I have a piece that I am happy with and would fit in with the advert. The also good effect that this development has had on the final product is personally my creativity. At times I have been stuck with how to portray my ideas but it has helped having the time and the mood boards to boost the morale. I think that I have used the development stages more wisely than the planning because the developing of the final piece took longer and had the better effect – the colour was already planned but I changed and got rid of ideas during the development, it was hard to decide with what idea to go with and what design to choose because I was only just expanding my ideas and the more I was thinking, the more opportunities I had to make the design better. For this can design I would like to think that I have come on in leaps and have totally changed my outset on the process of designing because I went from a design that was really basic to something complex with a lot more techniques and a better look.

Page 16: Design for advertsing 1

Task 8: Web Banner Development

I decided to change from the leader board layout because I couldn’t expand my design. I took inspiration from my advert and used similar gradients and images to create the look. I decided to have an edgier look on the web banners and use the rest of the space to highlight the can which is the main focus. I mostly used a crowd picture of used a picture to wrap the text, I thought this was effective on the advert and wanted to use it again. I also thought that the footballs were effective because they added to the football effect and I can perform some good gradient techniques on them.

Out of all three designs, I prefer the middle design, it is my strongest design and has more technical quantities. It is also similar to my last design for the packaging and I wanted to keep the same flow throughout, and make my product recognisable. I also like the last design as I wanted to include an actual footballer however it overshadows the N which doesn’t look very professional. The first design is simple which I don’t like and one which I will develop, I used similar techniques such as the stroke and gradient to create most of the effect. I wanted to use the can as like a shrine and something that would be the only stand out object, I tried to put the can (s) in different positions to give it that feel, the most effective would have to be in the middle, the larger image emphasises the energy drink.

Page 17: Design for advertsing 1

Task 8: Web Banner Development

These are some of the tools I used to create the gif. The process was relatively straight forward after getting used to creating the key frames and moving objects about. On my gif, the words fade out and then fade back in again, this is effective with the crowd picture as it also fades but can show the crowd becoming more of the ‘12 th man’. The hardest part of creating the gif was getting ideas to work, on some layers, linking didn’t work and I had to move objects individually, this was becoming tedious and creating too many key frames. Eventually I settled for the words fading as it is effective and brings light to the gif.

One of the last tools that was used was called ‘Forever’ this meant that the gif was on a continuous loop, the tween tool was useful as it added more key frames and looked better when the words were fading in and out.

When saving a gif, you have to save for web which brings up this box, once on the Powerpoint the gif works fine and the timing is still the same like it was on Photoshop.

This is the design that I felt was the best and that I could do lots with. I had many ideas and tried them all out before deciding on one. With the gradient set on the lions and the footballs I didn’t want to move them so the wording was something that I wanted to play with. It was frustrating not getting the ideas right at first but this was maybe because I hadn’t familiarized myself with the tools.

Page 18: Design for advertsing 1

Task 8: Final Web Banner

Page 19: Design for advertsing 1

What are the technical qualities of your work? There are more technical qualities to my work than previous adverts and can designs. Most of the tools were already on Photoshop but I hadn’t used them before. To loop the key frames I used the tween tool, you could then add how many key frames you wanted, in this case I added 10 and then 10 again for the second time. I used some other tools such as the blending mode, opacity levels and linking layers. I also made sure that all the text was in separate layers otherwise the gif wouldn’t work with the crowd picture behind it too. The other ideas that I had to create the gif used similar techniques but they didn’t work and or give the effect that this one has. After moving an object, you can choose to duplicate the frames, you can then move on to selecting the tool Forever which continuously plays the gif. Before creating this work I had to make sure that everything was placed correctly and I couldn’t add into key frames as it would change the whole gif. I made three potential web banners before moving on to the gif, two were leader board size and one was a rectangle, I wanted to have a variation so that I could do different things with them, they all followed a similar style, with the rectangle web banner following the advert. Each of my web banners have a football on or use an incentive of a football player I decided to also use the can in all of my designs, with the background still being black, it still needed some colour and it is also what I am selling. When creating the web banners I also used mostly the same tools as my advert and can design, I still kept the gradient as I think that has the standout effect for most of my designs. On the final we banner I made I was running out of ideas and couldn’t find a suitable attention grabber, I decided on making a football player come alive in the text, although it covers the N on ‘man’, I didn’t want to warp it, I also wanted to focus on the facial expression. Most of my other work has been about including bright colours and I wanted to go for an edgier look to the web banners, going back to the gradient, I wanted to heavily use it and made sure it worked as it didn’t fully work on the advert. For choosing the design to accompany the gif, I chose the one that I thought I could do a lot with, I tried many ideas, my first was to squash the can, I had to duplicate the layers and then warp the cans to look different every time, my second was to move the lions to the centre, I had to move them individually and didn’t play at the same time which looked unprofessional. As the crowd is the fuel behind my product the other idea was for them to fade in and out of the text, we had to change the opacity level to zero for each ten key frames after using the tween tool. The web banner isn’t exaggerated and shows my technical abilities as well as showing off my product.

Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation

Page 20: Design for advertsing 1

What are the aesthetic qualities of your work? The aesthetic qualities of my work are that it is strong, and has bold colours on it, for my original colour and font testing I chose block colours like red and blue and thought that, that would be enough in my product, after going for an edgier look to the web banner I decided I still wanted to keep the red as it is used on the can and on the advert, it is still recognisable and therefore keeps the flow that I wanted to achieve from the can design. The gradient and the colours are a main aesthetic in my web banner, it shows off my work, I also like that the footballs looked ripped and torn this is also from the gradient I added, on the lions I used the same gradient, however I didn’t want to exactly replicate the advert and thought that there would be enough red and enough going on, to leave it simplistic. Another aesthetic quality of my work is that the picture and text ratio matches, it also represents the motive – the 12 th man being the crowd in football I have liked to stick with this throughout my designs, it has worked on the advert and also in this section, I used trial and error with the crowd picture because many times it didn’t work, especially on the start of creating the advert, I also think that the crowd picture has a certain stimuli as the fans (crowd is mostly associated with football). Thirdly I think that the best quality about my work is the lions and footballs on either side, because much like my can design and advert it shows that the product is British without being patriotic, I also wanted to add the ripped effect to the footballs because during sport you get worn down, much like you do when overusing a football - that was one of my ways of putting a motive across that way. My second web banner was similar to the first, in size. The first aesthetic quality is the way the logo is balanced in the background, the logo isn’t on the other designs and also reiterating about keeping the flow, the font is still the same as the can design and the advert, the logo tells a message about the product, which is useful for the consumers as it could give them another reason to buy the energy drink. Secondly, the three cans are to the left of the banner which balances everything out, I also think that it is an aesthetic quality because it adds the colour into the banner and you can also see the can from three angles, the use of using three angles makes the banner look classy and not overcrowded, I didn’t use a gradient on any of the objects as I thought it would ruin the style, a simpler look brings out the aesthetic qualities more one of these could be organisation. I decided to leave the crowd picture for this design as I didn’t want to use it too often and I felt it would work if I added something else into the web banner for a change. This brings me onto my third aesthetic quality, I think that the footballer mixed in with the text works well, as I wanted to concentrate on the facial expressions, much like Lucozade on their newest advert. The picture that I have selected shows success and determination on the face, much like the success after drinking my energy drink. I think that this is my strongest aesthetic quality in this design because it splashes a bit more colour but also uses its own shadow and still creates the domain of having a rougher look.My third web banner takes inspiration from the advert I created, I wanted something that was similar and to keep the same idea so this was it. My first aesthetic quality from this is the gradient inside and outside of the shield, I wanted more of a gradient on the advert for the shield and I have achieved this on this design, I think that the black and grey tones work well again and show off the can in the middle, I don’t think I have overused the gradient because it works well on all of the designs. My second aesthetic quality for this work is the footballs at either side of the page, this time the gradient isn’t used because I wanted the footballs to have a light to them, this is because I wanted a light around the can, to make it like a shrine. (continued on next slide).

Page 21: Design for advertsing 1

The more light I brought in the better, the final design is still like the advert however it is different in that there is more boldness to it. The final aesthetic quality on this piece of work is the can itself, it is big and in the centre of the banner, this way it is clearer to see and the design on the can is also recognisable, from a sales point of view, consumers could see the advert and the web banner, which would then encourage more sales and promotion.

Are there opportunities for further development of your work?On my final design I think that there is lots of improvements to be made, I feel that even though it has strong points, it is also too basic and rushed, it also doesn’t show off any of my technical skills, as most of it is carried on from the other designs. To prevent this, I should have asked for help in creating something more complex, especially as it was my final design. For my second design also, I feel that this could have done with a bit more work in trying to find another way of introducing the footballer into the design as it blocks the text and the only way I could show it was to put it on a white background. For the whole development of my work I feel that I could have looked more into the colour scheme and what I wrote about it, the black is a classy colour however there is only so much you can do with a gradient on a black background, this is when I began to run out of ideas, which made it complicated to create something that was at standard with the first design. If I had the opportunity I would create the web banners again because although I took some inspiration from the advert, it was hard to match that quality with the time I had, I also didn’t ask for as much help so my creativity suffered for that. I also think that starting off with a leader board design wasn’t the best idea as I had limited space and I know I am capable of achieving more from this, I should have chosen a different size to start with and therefore I would have more variation to my work.

Are your final pieces are fit for purpose? The purpose of this work was to create web banners that would be suitable to not be ignored on the web. I think that my final pieces re fit for purpose because they would fit in any situation on the internet. I can see them popping up at the top of the screen and you would be drawn to it, rather than think it was something created easily on Photoshop. There are more developments to my work but I feel that I have fitted this purpose well as I have created something that is not too outstanding on the internet and has aesthetic qualities that people would like when it appears. I only think that my final design properly meets the expectations of the purpose because it is the one with the most aesthetically pleasing objects and one that I tried all my ideas on to create the gif. I also think it fits the purpose better because it is the one that has led on from the advert the most using the same objects and gradients to complete the effect.

What areas of planning and development worked well? For this part, I didn’t take to any formal planning but used my development to build up the pieces of work. I think that the development from the advert and the can design worked to create these pieces as I wanted to keep everything similar, and in the same style. For previous work I have looked back at my mind maps to find something I could use, for my third design I think I needed to use this because it looks too shabby and not up to my standard. During the time I had to make the web banners, I learnt a lot in the creativity section, so I think that much like the advert it was the development that helped me the most. I think I will use the development process more wisely in future designs and not always use my previous work as I need to create something different each time.

Page 22: Design for advertsing 1

What areas of planning and development could have done with more work? I definitely think that I should have planned my three designs before getting straight into it, as I can’t rely on my initial ideas and previous work as it doesn’t help me coming onto the final ideas. I should have planned what to take forward with me on this process, because I couldn’t settle for repeating all the designs and my work would look boring all the time. My area of development is good, but my planning isn’t I can’t do anything now about the lack of character on my designs but I can take it into account that more mind maps may be useful in the future when creating three things as I can get

What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product?I think this has had a really good effect on my final product, it shows that I can be competent at something and create a continued flow in theme and design. I like that the development stages have made me more creative and I like to copy style from previous ideas and see what I can do with them to create something different for each product. I have enjoyed creating the web banner because it was easy following on from previous adverts and can designs and showing off the technical aspects that I am good at.

Page 23: Design for advertsing 1

Task 9: Storyboard DevelopmentMy storyboard consists of ten boxes which has a text to picture ratio. There are differences of the football players and the stadium however this is a rough idea until it all comes together. This idea uses the player performance to show how my energy drink works and looks. I put my can on the storyboard because it is going on the advert, and it goes along well with the way the picture and the text are displayed. I explained in some detail the way I wanted the advert to work and what would go where etc. My storyboard pictures could be better in displaying the action however the text does that for me, for my second idea it will be more developed and have a better storyline, for my first idea it is not bad and is starting to show off my ideas more and still linking it back to the initial ideas and advert.

I changed the idea slightly from my initial idea as I planned for the beginning to be different with more players involved with the drink, I think this idea is better because it focuses on one player and follows their story better.

The images I used were stock images and not used them before for my advert or can design, I need to get them in a a proper ratio so it looks like a proper storyboard.

The synopsis of the story links to a normal football scenario where the players get tired and the manager/second coach bring supplies of energy drinks, normally towards the end of the game.

It was also easier to spread the images out and show a transitional change during the storyboard which people could relate to, I have done many storyboards but this one is different as I have had to add my product and make it look morally realistic.

Page 24: Design for advertsing 1

Task 9: Storyboard DevelopmentI have picked the most iconic football ground and footballer for this storyboard, England’s stadium Wembley is one of the biggest tourist attractions and people would recognise it. Luis Suarez is also one of the best footballers in the world, he is known to everyone and it and would be easy to sell a product because I have recognisable faces and places.

This is the best that I could think of when developing from my initial ideas because I didn’t like what I had come up with before. My original idea was like the Lucozade advert but involved more of the crowd, I think for my next idea I will build on this story and make it more apparent to the 12th Man.

I wanted to get a big comparison in of how the drink would effect the players mood when playing, so the pictures of the player changes throughout the advert, I think its important to show the change when displaying the energy drink otherwise people won’t buy it.

I think that this storyboard will work because it has an interesting story and connects with real life. It was easy deciding what to do and what ideas to include, it is straight forward on Photoshop rather than stripgenerator.com because they didn’t have anything linked with football.

I started to roto scope some of the images of the footballers as this is what I had in mind but it was easier to collect the images and make a first draft, because it would slow me down.

Page 25: Design for advertsing 1

Are there opportunities for further development of your work? There are definitely chances to develop my work, the advert seems quite basic however I have honed the detail as much as I can. I also think that my idea could be further developed as it is similar to existing adverts, such as the Lucozade one which I did a lot of research on I could develop the storyline with a more complex and or stronger ending. Other little things that could be developed are that the storyboard looks too compact, better quality pictures that are a bit wider would have given more room and would make it look a little less scatty. Another thing that I could do to develop it further is to take up two boxes with my pictures and then I could be less vague about every step of the advert. On the whole storyboard I feel it could be more exciting as the players used throughout the storyboard aren’t the same so it looks odd like that. Also the can isn’t put into the storyboard very well so that makes the storyboard look out of shape too. If I had to look at every picture individually, I would have tried to get all the players and stadiums matching so it actually runs properly. On certain parts I feel like a wrote too much and some of it is irrelevant in just giving a bit of detail. Because I have used stock images it is hard to comment on the images rather than the text, I could have worded some parts better and not repeated things such as the performance that followed in the previous slide.

Are your final pieces are fit for purpose?I think that my final pieces are fit for purpose, the purpose was to create a storyboard that would show an idea for an advert. I think that I have achieved this because I have enough text and picture ratio to balance the storyboard out, also the text gives a justification to why the pictures were selected and how everything would work if it was to be filmed. Another reason for filling the purpose is that my can works into the storyboard and builds up around it. I think that by choosing good images and using place/people that are well known and would attract interest in my energy drink. It relates back to creating a simple idea of what the advert would be like, I think that I have done this by giving each picture a good explanation and describing my view of the advert. My storyboard doesn’t link with the poster however it does show how it has been developed to create something better and the way I have manipulated the use of 12th man to mean something to the players rather than the fans. During my planning for this, I expected there to be a lot more, such as a fast build up to how the can worked and that the advert would consist of the players rotoscoped.

What areas of planning and development worked well?I think that my copy and script for the advert was the area that worked well, because I could pick out bits that I did and didn’t like and go on to develop it. There was certain parts of the development which I enjoyed because I could experiment with different characters and what I wanted from them, I could also fit my can into different scenarios and I could adapt the story board to put the can in at different points.

Task 9: Storyboard Evaluation

Page 26: Design for advertsing 1

What areas of planning and development could have done with more work? There were certain parts of my planning that let me down because I didn’t go into much detail and also I only had one specific idea and not a plan B in case I didn’t like my first idea. I think that my development was fine because I have created a piece that is fit for purpose. I was too focused on one idea and creating something in my head rather than something that would be practical to use on Photoshop and to evaluate. For future reference I would thoroughly plan through different options and different scenarios so then I would have more to try out and it could have worked better

What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product? I think that my development stages had a good effect on my final product because I changed my idea to something that suited myself and something that would work for showing my ideas. It didn’t take much time for me to complete the development stage because I only had to make a few alterations and then this idea came about. Throughout this project the majority of my development stages have had a good effect on the final product because I have had time to think through what changes I want to make and how it will look compared to the can design and the existing products I have created. Out of all of them, I feel that this had the least amount of good effect because this was simple and didn’t personally require a lot of skills to make.
