STAR Association (Singapore Talents, Artistes & Resources Association) was formed on 15 December 2015. This is an initiative that came about in 2014 and has been 2 years in the making by the pioneers in the entertainment and event management industry. As you know, the government has had a vision to make Singapore a MICE (Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions & Exhibitions) Hub. In doing so, there has been a surge of event management companies, artistes, Master-of-Ceremonies (Emcees), Audio-Video and Lighting companies and entertainers (DJs etc). This quick growth of self-employed, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in the entertainments field has brought about it’s fair share of challenges these last couple of years.

Some of the STAR founding members have been approached by various senior officials both in the governmental organisations and the non-governmental organisations to try and have some form of organisation in this particular area. The government is not looking at having another union as there is already one that is in place and is running efficiently and effectively. Thus, STAR was born and we got our approvals from MHA in December 2015. The founding Executive Committee is a group of individuals that have been in the entertainment industry for more than 30 years, and now want to give back to the industry that helped them grow. There are total of 13 board members of the board which include Davwinder Sheena as President, Anthony Lim (Lawyer) as Secretary, and various members of the entertainment fraternity ranging from event management companies, AVL companies, Emcees and DJs. At this point, we have four (04) target groups. The Emcee sub-group, DJ sub-group, AVL sub-group and Artiste sub-group. Each sub-group has it’s own sub-committee to manage their respective affairs, events and members.

Membership fees is a low S$100/year. Which is about $8/month for all the benefits of discounts via merchant members (cafes, restaurants, facilities, suppliers, technology partners etc). This cost of membership will also give members the benefits of attending specific member only events and talks organised by the respective industry. Membership benefits are attached in our deck. The founding members believe that the incorporation of STAR Association will definitely give the freelancers in our industry a unified 'voice' to be heard by the respective agencies and members of public. This is a much needed cause.

This evolvement I am referring to comes in the form of segregation, tribalization and debilitation. Not that these things have never existed before, but nowadays the reasons for such division may not even be music-related.

For over than a decade, DJ communities, groups or collectives are formed in relation to their preference of music genres, styles or beliefs.

For example, about a decade ago, collectives such as FRONTALLABS, TEKTILE Movement, KINEMAT, Guerilla, Radiance Crew, SUBVERT, Groove Genetics and few others, mainly champion various types electronic music such as Progressive, Techno, House and its sub genres, AFRO-Latin, Minimal, Breaks, DnB and even Trance. One thing that all these crews and DJ collectives have in common is that, they don't share the interest of mainstream music in their sets and the segregation is usually music-related. Then, there were collectives that are formed in line of their believes such as, “REAL DJs ONLY USES TURNTABLES” - therefore, the members of these group ONLY uses turntables.

SGDJ feedback

In the recent months, much has evolved within the local DJ community. Sad to say, it has nothing to do about the

technology, techniques or the art-form per say.

Page 38: EVENT RESOURCES DIRECTORY N o. · For advertsing sales please contact kevinsgdjmag@gmail.com For editorial matters please contact sgdjmag@gmail.com writers Alan Oliveiro Ashton Pereira

There were also DJ collectives like HYPOMATIQ Crew, formed because of their corporate affiliation with hospitality organization such as The Emerald Hill Group and DJ brands such as Denon DJ. Their music style was predominantly mainstream as their DJs were mostly residents of clubs and establishments, or supporting the events industry. Nowadays, with the evolution of social media, DJ communities are divided thru Facebook groups, the DJ schools they came from, the clubs they represent or even because of an admiration for celebrity DJs like Soda or Paris Hilton ;-) ... If you're still not convinced, we do have DJ collectives being formed because of their dissatisfaction of a certain individual. How about a collective that is based on how they look behind a DJ console or their ability to attract attention with their bodies instead of DJ-ing skills or music selection...?? Yes, fellow comrades, these groups or collectives do exist in Singapore. Coming back to the different local Facebook DJ groups, do we really need so many? Is it really necessary? How will it benefit the whole community in general? Can it help to elevate the standards? With so many DJ groups and communities, will we finally see a local DJ grace a national event or even an international event in Singapore? I am sure everyone of you reading this article will have your own opinions and perceptions to these questions, and best of all, I think you are all right on it's own levels.

Personally for me, I believe that more DJ groups, community, collectives or even tribes, are very much welcome here. DJ-ing in it's own art-form has evolved so much that nowadays we become DJs for all sorts of reasons and preference, not just music. One important factor is that it allows younger DJs or new DJs to seek help, share, speak up and speak out. They may choose to associate themselves with a certain group that is welcoming towards them or share the same interest within the DJ-ing paradigm. At any point of time, these DJs can choose which group to post their questions or just sit back and learn from the various groups. DJ-ing may not be my bread 'n' butter career nowadays, but I keep myself abreast with the happenings from the many local groups that is active in social media. Updates about vinyls, new equipments, new clubs, new residencies, bad paymasters, gig openings or even simply just bitching about an individual, are some of the topics that we find in these DJ forums. Somehow, it has made the local DJ fraternity exciting again since two years ago when we broke the Guinness World Record last August 2014.

Wait 'a minute...!!? Did I say “exciting”? Did I say “Guinness World Record”? Has it been two years already??

Talking about something exciting for the DJ community, we now have the newly-launched STAR Association. Started two years ago after the Singapore DJ's GWR feat, active and senior members — from freelancers to experienced business owners — from the events industry came together to help improve, educate and cultivate the new generation of emcees, performers, talents, DJs, and also to raise the standards of technical entertainment. More than often our DJ friends have cried foul because of bad business ethics, unfavorable regulations, lack of understanding on contractual agreements, marketing tools, business avenues or even fair performing rates.

There were no associations, government body or offices for them to seek help. Now, we have STAR Association! Sad to say, support hasn't been all forthcoming. I am not sure where all the cries-for-help have disappeared to? Maybe there is an alternative out there to help them that we don't know of… or maybe the DJs are not coming because they don't see enough familiar faces in STAR? Maybe everyone is playing the waiting game to see if STAR is “real”? So many questions to answer. So why don’t we all come together and find out more? Just us DJs and STAR. In the meantime, stay safe, stay vigilant and keep rocking. You'll never know who will steal your next gig. WE ARE SINGAPURA DJs!!

HOW TO LEAD FROM THE FRONT By Ashton Periera

If I was a betting man I’d wager that the majority of Pulse readers here have come across the phrase, "Lead from the front!", either in your MBA or some seminar or other. For those of you who are in the thick of action and without the luxury of a schedule for lots of seminars, this is for you. This short article serves as a quick takeaway of the look and feel of leading from the front. In Sequoia Pacific, I have the pleasure of serving clients across the Asia Pacific region and in one of the firm’s services, it assists Small to Medium Business (SMB) owners to head out into the markets. Strong leadership is crucial when heading out to market because when the clients roll in, your processes and protocols will be tested.

So, over the years I have discovered the “golden thread” in the weave of business operations that will be the basis for this how-to article. In avanti e verso l’alto! (Onwards and upwards) That "golden thread" is a personal standard that SMB owners need to uphold. It is higher than for most individuals because of the direct interactions they have with their staff. Unlike large corporations where the various layers of management are the staff facing element that isolates the C-Suite from the rest of the company, most SMB owners are highly visible and interact heavily with the entire company. The standard can be best summed up in this quote by Peter F. Drucker: “Rank does not confer privilege or give power. It imposes responsibility”

Simply put it is this paradigm that has to be embraced first. It is easy for you to identify the negatives in your company environment and I have noted the opposite display of this mindset and it is evidenced in the disorganization, resentment, and low morale among staff. Putting the negativity aside, I shall share a few steps on how you can embrace personal responsibility for the better of your team and company. Step 1: Be clear with your instructions. Ensure processes are followed by monitoring the completion of a task properly. Implement protocols properly and do not contradict yourself by changing your instructions or being indecisive.

Choose your words properly before you speak. This allows you to eliminate emotional responses and it develops the habit to employ logic in your thought processes. Step 2: Mind your demeanour. “You can feel the vibes, feel the people pulling for you“ Julius Erving. Your manner and posture to your team and staff is a clear display of your inner feelings and confidence. If you show fear and indecision, your staff will reflect those qualities as well. Lead with confidence! Hide your negativity and deal with them with your mentor or when you're alone. Display positivity and you will reap great results from the attitude change of your team or staff.

Step 3: Build morale in the company. The fastest way to accomplish this step is to celebrate the wins. Forget the size of the win just celebrate it! Post your win on the company social media platforms and tag your team or staff for a job well done for example. Feed the soul by stuffing the belly. Take your team or staff out for a celebratory meal and in some companies I’ve encountered, a quick getaway, concert tickets or spa packages are arranged for the team or department as a reward. The lengthier step would be the guiding of your team of staff with encouragement. Do not baby them. Handle mistakes objectively to prevent repeats and avoid emotional responses. Here’s a tip for you managers. Keep a little pocketbook on the performance of your team or department. Note down their mistakes and the follow-up to prevent a repeat and note down their successes as well.

Why you ask? 2 words. Performance review. With that notebook you can almost eliminate bias. Handle their mistakes with a mission to guide them and you’ll be surprised how reassuring it makes your team or staff feel. There we go! Leading from the front is evidence of YOU taking responsibility for your actions and the success of the company. Use these 3 steps to begin with and allow time to work its magic on your team or staff. Along this journey you will discover other helpful steps to take so feel free to use this article as a foundation and keep building from here.

A JOURNEY INTO KL SOUND

A Super Club was being built in Jalan Ampang Kuala Lumpur. It used to be a live venue which eventually ran it’s time. Bob Wong, the great architect of clubs was refurbishing this space in an old warehouse. He was one of the original partners of the world famous ZOUK in Singapore. Borrowing ideas which helped ZOUK become what it is; he proceeded to build this multi split level dance club. The audio-visual fit-out for the club was originally commissioned to another company. Unfortunately, opening night technical issues forced them out and we were engaged as the consultant and contractor for the group.

The install was a mix of speakers from different manufacturers. We practically had to clean up the mess and get the club going. It was a huge responsibility especially trying to convince the owner who was known as the “Salvage King” to start using new and streamlined equipment. A lot of the lighting units came from a club that closed down in Singapore. Though most of the lighting equipment was considered dated such as the Clay Paky Comets, Astro Discos, UFOs etc. but we had in our hands four units of FAL Clever Scans (Moving Mirror Lights) and a dedicated lighting controller.

These were not easy to program and we gave up on them eventually. Email and on line data sharing was not really available till a few years later and if you didn’t have the manual, snail mail would take at least a month before you received anything. Who could tell that these were the pre cursor to the now indispensable Moving Head Intelligent Light Fixtures. Of course there were the PC Spots which cost a fortune to own and operate. Anyway, VOODOO was the beginning of large scale super clubs in the ‘90s. Two years later, FIRE Disco Singapore found its way to Malaysian shores and the two room club scene began. FIRE with its massive budgets showed KL what money and technology could do to a club. I used to visit Singapore a lot back then as most of the importers and distributors were based

there and as with most clubs in Singapore, spending on technology was the way forward. I started my venture into the Audio install industry with Cerwin Vega!, a popular American brand in the 80’s who came up with the Earthquake series Subs made popular by the movie of the same name. They were affordable and packed a lot of SPL and punch. We had a falling out with the local distributors over some project proposals. We moved on. Partnering with another importer, we started promoting DAS Audio of Spain. DAS Audio was what KL needed, affordable high powered systems which were built on the same platform as JBL and the likes. This too did not last long as the popularity of these affordable systems was the envy of other importers.

We proceeded to outfit another super club located adjacent to Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel called The Arena Discotheque with a huge DAS & NEXO system. This was a huge room which was packed to the brim especially on Fridays and Saturdays. My name was synonymous with DAS then. As they say, all good things must come to an end and after three years of promoting the brand, we parted ways. This was in 1997. I was about to go on my first trip to MESSE Frankfurt. During the winter of 1997 in February, while walking around the great exhibition halls of the MESSE Expo, I stumbled upon Court Acoustics and Stephen Court himself. This legendary loudspeaker designer and manufacturer turned out to be the one whom we had been looking for. His insights and advice was immeasurable. Their range of high quality loudspeakers was what the scene in Malaysia needed. By this time, more brands were being imported directly into Malaysia through local distributors. We quickly signed up with Court Acoustics and the revolution began. Our installs were the talk of the city and the nightlife. The first Court Acoustics Black Box System was installed in KL in the ‘80s in a club called Tracs. Our first

install was for a club called Modestos Sunway Pyramid. Club owners used to visit the club just to listen to the system. Another large install that we did was a club called Heaven on the 18th and 19th floor of an office tower right smack in the middle of KL. For ARENA and Heaven, we were also using lighting equipment from JB Lighting. This was followed by another super club called Embassy. We installed a massive system with so much of insane SPL and audio quality that the Ampere meters in the electrical distribution room used to fluctuate like the VU Meters on a mixing desk. We had entered into another realm of club AVL design and build. Kuala Lumpur also experienced a new sensation that we were involved in. The BOOM BOOM ROOM KL, a concept borrowed from Haw Par Villa Singapore made its way here. Joanne Kam Poh Poh and her wacky crew rocked the house for two years. Every night was a Saturday night here. Of course, yours truly and team were the show production crew. I always believe that the sound quality of an audio system does not lie in the specs on paper but in the actual experience. We had arrived at creating this experience as club goers were becoming more discerning. Numerous clubs in Malaysia were outfitted with Court Acoustics and Varyscan. The late 90’s and the early 2000’s saw the Malaysian Ringgit take a serious hit. We had to discontinue using these products as the Sterling and the Euro were just too expensive. As I always say, these are the ramblings of an old dinosaur.
