Daniel Leblanc arrived at Port Royal about 1645. Daniel and his wife Francoise were established in the parish of St-Charles-de-Mines in Port Royal Acadie. Daniel remained on the northern bank of the river Francoise, in the North East of lake Bélisle; approximately 9 miles from Port-Royal and 1/2 mile below Vault, St-Laurent. Daniel was a farmer. In the Census of Acadie in 1671, he had 18 cows, 26 sheep and 10 arpents. In the Census of Acadie in 1686, he had 2 rifles, 6 arpents, 15 cows, 20 sheep and 7 pigs. In the Census of Acadie in 1693, he had 20 cows, 35 sheep, 9 pigs, 8 arpents and 3 rifles. It being useful had named one Jean LaForêt and Marguerite LaPrincesse.

Notes for Francois LeBlanc:During the great deportation of 1755, Francois, Marguerite and their family were deported to Point Shirley Massachusetts. Francois petitioned the Governour of the Massachusetts Bay Colonie to be removed from Point Shirley and move to Needham Massachusetts.

To his Excellency the Governour, the Hon'ble the Council and Representatives of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay. Francois Le Blanc a poor french Inhabitant of Accaday humbly shew That he and his family five of which are men were placed at Port Shirley that they have with great, difficulty supported themselves since the provision allowed by the Province ceased but now they cannot find work and they have a Winter before them and no prospect of any opportunity of labour during that season and all necessaries of life are excessive dear, there and your Petitioner's family must perish with hunger and cold. Your Petitioner has relations placed in the town of York and is known to Col. Donnell and Capt.Donnell and has traded with them, and he thinks he could support his family, tho he is 63 years old with the help of his sons and some little relief from the Publick and as there is but 8 French in that Town he hoped there will be no exception and humbly prays he may be placed there with his family. CHARLES LEBLANC

Francois died in Needham Massachusetts in 1761.Marguerite with four sons and a daughter, Simon and Marguerite being still in her household, were repatriated onto Miquelon Island near Newfoundland in 1763. In 1767 they removed to Memramcook New Brunswick with the families of her sons Charles and Francois.

Generation 7 (con't)Henri came to Dalton Massachusetts by train from Moncton New Brunswick and entered the U.S. through Vanceboro ME on April. 13, 1885.Father Thibodeau, parish priest of St. Pierre Parish in Cocagne NB told me that the folks going to the States were advised to anglicize their french names to help with their transition, Henri anglicized his name to Henry White when he came to the United States and so too did many of his brothers. Many of the French immigrants who came during this period including his wife Anne-Marie Bourque changed her name to Marie Anne Burke.Henri was a carpenter and for a time worked at the carpenter shop for the Byron and Weston Paper mill.For a brief period, at least in October of 1898, they lived in Middlefield where their daughter Maria Clara died. Maria was brought to Dalton and buried in the family burial lot at Fairview Cemetery on Curtis St.Henry and Marie Anne lived on Hale Street in Dalton for only a few years.They were next found at Housatonic Street in Dalton.They then moved to 36 Depot Street near the Center Block and eventually to 933 East Main Street where they lived until the family built the house at 16 Lake Street. This lot was also part of the East Main Street property and behind the main house.The main house at 933 East Main remained in the family until 1962 when it was sold to Gordon and Marion FitzPatrick.

The Battle of Savo Island August 9, 1942

The Japanese Force was diverted from other assignments as soon as word reached Admiral Mikawa that the seaplane base at Tulagi was being invaded. These ships headed slowly towards Guadalcanal. They waited until some information was available so Admiral Mikawa could develop a plan. They also spent some time on the way trying to deceive the US planes that spotted the force. The Japanese objective was to destroy the transports. The American Force was assigned to protect the troop transport ships bringing the First Marine Division to Guadalcanal. The US Forces had been on alert since prior to the invasion on August 7. They had been involved in several Air Raids during the first two days, they were also watchful for Japanese submarines. This second night off Guadalcanal was to be their last night. They were scheduled to pull out the next day. The US Forces were divided into three groups. The Eastern Group was not involved in the battle. They patrolled between Guadalcanal and Tulagi. The Southern Group included the cruisers Chicago, Canberra, Australia, and destroyers Patterson and Bagley. They patrolled south of Savo Island. The Northern Group included the cruisers Vincennes, Astoria and Quincy, and destroyers Helm and Wilson. They patrolled north of Savo. Destroyers Blue and Ralph Talbot patroled a picket line, one on each side of Savo Island to the North. The Japanese spent the two days gathering information from the returning planes involved in the Air Raids and their scout planes. They worked very effectively to not be caught by US patrol planes moving toward Guadalcanal. They knew which US

They brought the battle to the US Navy on Japanese terms. They would steam in a battle line of Cruisers with the destroyer Yunagi last in line. The plan was to approach Guadalcanal through the Slot, entering Iron Bottom Sound between Savo and Guadalcanal, brushing aside any opposing ships. They would attack the transports off Guadalcanal, then move to the transports off Tulagi. When finished they would leave Iron Bottom Sound between Savo and Florida islands and withdraw North, through the Slot. The scout planes from the IJN cruisers would scout ahead and on signal drop illuminating flares. The BattleAt 54 minutes after midnight on August 9, the Japanese sighted the picket destroyer USS Blue. They continued on, while Blue did not spot them. At 1:36 am they spotted a group of ships guarding the southern entrance and launched torpedos. At 1:43 USS Patterson sighted the Japanese and broadcast a radio alarm. Warning - Warning: Strange Ships Entering Harbor!At the same time, Japanese Floatplanes dropped flares over the transports off Guadalcanal. These flares silhouetted Chicago and Canberra of the Southern Force. Australia had pulled out of the line to take Admiral Crutchley, RAN, to meet with Admiral Turner and General Vandegrift. The Japanese Cruiser line was 4,500 yards away. They opened fire on the American cruisers. On the Canberra a sharp-eyed lookout had spotted the Japanese ships, and then the torpedos fired earlier started to hit. The Alarm was still sounding and the minute that started at 1:43 am was not finished Two torpedos and 14 shells were to hit. The Japanese had achieved complete surprise. The Chicago was hit by one torpedo and one shell. With part of her bow blown off, Chicago looked for the battle, but steamed the wrong way. Admiral Mikawa had turned his cruisers to the north. At 1:48 the Japanese fired torpedos at the Northern Force. Cruisers Quincy, Astoria and Vincennes were under attack. Vincennes took two or three torpedos, all ships took hits from gun fire. These cruisers did return fire. The Chokai took two hits. By shortly after 2:00 the battle was over. The Japanese regrouped and retreated northward. They left behind four Cruisers sunk with one badly damaged. The Japanese took minor damage from a few shells to two cruisers. It was only the beginning for these seven cruisers when the S-44 fired torpedos and sunk IJN Kako just before she arrived back at her base on New Ireland. By the end of the war all seven had been sunk.

Notes for Henri LeBlanc:Henri came to Dalton Massachusetts by train from Moncton New Brunswick and entered the U.S. through Vanceboro ME on April. 13, 1885.Father Thibodeau, parish priest of St. Pierre Parish in Cocagne NB told me that the folks going to the States were advised to anglicize their french names to help with their transition, Henri anglicized his name to Henry White when he came to the United States and so too did many of his brothers. Many of the French immigrants who came during this period including his wife Anne-Marie Bourque changed her name to Marie Anne Burke.Henri was a carpenter and for a time worked at the carpenter shop for the Byron and Weston Paper mill.For a brief period, at least in October of 1898, they lived in Middlefield where their daughter Maria Clara died. Maria was brought to Dalton and buried in the family burial lot at Fairview Cemetery on Curtis St.Henry and Marie Anne lived on Hale Street in Dalton for only a few years.They were next found at Housatonic Street in Dalton.They then moved to 36 Depot Street near the Center Block and eventually to 933 East Main Street where they lived until the family built the house at 16 Lake Street. This lot was also part of the East Main Street property and behind the main house.


The main house at 933 East Main remained in the family until 1962 when it was sold to Gordon and Marion FitzPatrick.

The Japanese Force was diverted from other assignments as soon as word reached Admiral Mikawa that the seaplane base at Tulagi was being invaded. These ships headed slowly towards Guadalcanal. They waited until some information was available so Admiral Mikawa could develop a plan. They also spent some time on the way trying to deceive the US planes that spotted the force. The Japanese objective was to destroy the transports. The American Force was assigned to protect the troop transport ships bringing the First Marine Division to Guadalcanal. The US Forces had been on alert since prior to the invasion on August 7. They had been involved in several Air Raids during the first two days, they were also watchful for Japanese submarines. This second night off Guadalcanal was to be their last night. They were scheduled to pull out the next day. The US Forces were divided into three groups. The Eastern Group was not involved in the battle. They patrolled between Guadalcanal and Tulagi. The Southern Group included the cruisers Chicago, Canberra, Australia, and destroyers Patterson and Bagley. They patrolled south of Savo Island. The Northern Group included the cruisers Vincennes, Astoria and Quincy, and destroyers Helm and Wilson. They patrolled north of Savo. Destroyers Blue and Ralph Talbot patroled a picket line, one on each side of Savo Island to the North. The Japanese spent the two days gathering information from the returning planes involved in the Air Raids and their scout planes. They worked very effectively to not be caught by US patrol planes moving toward Guadalcanal. They knew which US ships were there. They had a goal, the troop transports. They were prepared for battle. They brought the battle to the US Navy on Japanese terms. They would steam in a battle line of Cruisers with the destroyer Yunagi last in line. The plan was to approach Guadalcanal through the Slot, entering Iron Bottom Sound between Savo and Guadalcanal, brushing aside any opposing ships. They would attack the transports off Guadalcanal, then move to the transports off Tulagi. When finished they would leave Iron Bottom Sound between Savo and Florida islands and withdraw North, through the Slot. The scout planes from the IJN cruisers would scout ahead and on signal drop illuminating flares. The BattleAt 54 minutes after midnight on August 9, the Japanese sighted the picket destroyer USS Blue. They continued on, while Blue did not spot them. At 1:36 am they spotted a group of ships guarding the southern entrance and launched torpedos. At 1:43 USS Patterson sighted the Japanese and broadcast a radio alarm. Warning - Warning: Strange Ships Entering Harbor!At the same time, Japanese Floatplanes dropped flares over the transports off

Australia had pulled out of the line to take Admiral Crutchley, RAN, to meet with Admiral Turner and General Vandegrift. The Japanese Cruiser line was 4,500 yards away. They opened fire on the American cruisers. On the Canberra a sharp-eyed lookout had spotted the Japanese ships, and then the torpedos fired earlier started to hit. The Alarm was still sounding and the minute that started at 1:43 am was not finished Two torpedos and 14 shells were to hit. The Japanese had achieved complete surprise. The Chicago was hit by one torpedo and one shell. With part of her bow blown off, Chicago looked for the battle, but steamed the wrong way. Admiral Mikawa had turned his cruisers to the north. At 1:48 the Japanese fired torpedos at the Northern Force. Cruisers Quincy, Astoria and Vincennes were under attack. Vincennes took two or three torpedos, all ships took hits from gun fire. These cruisers did return fire. The Chokai took two hits. By shortly after 2:00 the battle was over. The Japanese regrouped and retreated northward. They left behind four Cruisers sunk with one badly damaged. The Japanese took minor damage from a few shells to two cruisers. It was only the beginning for these seven cruisers when the S-44 fired torpedos and sunk IJN Kako just before she arrived back at her base on New Ireland. By the end of the war all seven had been sunk.

Notes for Donald Edward White:Don and Eleanor lived in the house built for his parents at 16 Lake Street in Dalton Massachusetts. This house was on the property of the 933 East Main Street house where the family lived and Anne Marie ran a bakery. The house was built in the 20's by the family with Henri and Henry (Henny) as the key carpenter's. Henny died of cancer in 1930, Marshall died in 1934 and Henri died in 1936. In those years, wakes were held in the homes and Grandma was said to have commented that the house was built as a funeral parlor.Don's mother, Ann Marie, lived with Don until her death in 1958.Don was an accomplished guitar player playing a style similar to Les Paul. When I (Peter H. White) was small, his guitar playing was what drove me to learn to play. In about 2000, cousin Hank Leohr gave me the guitar I remember watching Don play. A 1939 archtop electric Epiphone New Yorker with a Rickenbacker horseshoe pickup.Eleanor was a terrific singer and together they would perform mostly at the Bass Ridge Country Club in Hinsdale Massachusetts.

The Japanese Force was diverted from other assignments as soon as word reached Admiral Mikawa that the seaplane base at Tulagi was being invaded. These ships headed slowly towards Guadalcanal. They waited until some information was available so Admiral Mikawa could develop a plan. They also spent some time on the way trying to deceive the US planes that spotted the force. The Japanese objective was to destroy the transports. The American Force was assigned to protect the troop transport ships bringing the First Marine Division to Guadalcanal. The US Forces had been on alert since prior to the invasion on August 7. They had been involved in several Air Raids during the first two days, they were also watchful for Japanese submarines. This second night off Guadalcanal was to be their last night. They were scheduled to pull out the next day. The US Forces were divided into three groups. The Eastern Group was not involved in the battle. They patrolled between Guadalcanal and Tulagi. The Southern Group included the cruisers Chicago, Canberra, Australia, and destroyers Patterson and Bagley. They patrolled south of Savo Island. The Northern Group included the cruisers Vincennes, Astoria and Quincy, and destroyers Helm and Wilson. They patrolled north of Savo. Destroyers Blue and Ralph Talbot patroled a picket line, one on each side of Savo Island to the North. The Japanese spent the two days gathering information from the returning planes involved in the Air Raids and their scout planes. They worked very effectively to not be caught by US patrol planes moving toward Guadalcanal. They knew which US ships were there. They had a goal, the troop transports. They were prepared for battle. They brought the battle to the US Navy on Japanese terms. They would steam in a battle line of Cruisers with the destroyer Yunagi last in line. The plan was to approach Guadalcanal through the Slot, entering Iron Bottom Sound between Savo and Guadalcanal, brushing aside any opposing ships. They would attack the transports off Guadalcanal, then move to the transports off Tulagi. When finished they would leave Iron Bottom Sound between Savo and Florida islands and withdraw North, through the Slot. The scout planes from the IJN cruisers would scout ahead and on signal drop illuminating flares. The BattleAt 54 minutes after midnight on August 9, the Japanese sighted the picket destroyer USS Blue. They continued on, while Blue did not spot them. At 1:36 am they spotted a group of ships guarding the southern entrance and launched torpedos. At 1:43 USS Patterson sighted the Japanese and broadcast a radio alarm. Notes for Henri LeBlanc:Henri came to Dalton Massachusetts by train from Moncton New Brunswick and entered the U.S. through Vanceboro ME on April. 13, 1885.Father Thibodeau, parish priest of St. Pierre Parish in Cocagne NB told me that the folks going to the States were advised to anglicize their french names to help with their transition, Henri anglicized his name to Henry White when he came to the United States and so too did many of his brothers. Many of the French immigrants who came during this period including his wife Anne-Marie Bourque changed her name to Marie Anne Burke.Henri was a carpenter and for a time worked at the carpenter shop for the Byron and Weston Paper mill.For a brief period, at least in October of 1898, they lived in Middlefield where their daughter Maria Clara died. Maria was brought to Dalton and buried in the family burial lot at Fairview Cemetery on Curtis St.Henry and Marie Anne lived on Hale Street in Dalton for only a few years.They were next found at Housatonic Street in Dalton.They then moved to 36 Depot Street near the Center Block and eventually to 933 East Main Street

Generation 9 (con't)Warning - Warning: Strange Ships Entering Harbor!At the same time, Japanese Floatplanes dropped flares over the transports off Guadalcanal. These flares silhouetted Chicago and Canberra of the Southern Force. Australia had pulled out of the line to take Admiral Crutchley, RAN, to meet with Admiral Turner and General Vandegrift. The Japanese Cruiser line was 4,500 yards away. They opened fire on the American cruisers. On the Canberra a sharp-eyed lookout had spotted the Japanese ships, and then the torpedos fired earlier started to hit. The Alarm was still sounding and the minute that started at 1:43 am was not finished Two torpedos and 14 shells were to hit. The Japanese had achieved complete surprise. The Chicago was hit by one torpedo and one shell. With part of her bow blown off, Chicago looked for the battle, but steamed the wrong way. Admiral Mikawa had turned his cruisers to the north. At 1:48 the Japanese fired torpedos at the Northern Force. Cruisers Quincy, Astoria and Vincennes were under attack. Vincennes took two or three torpedos, all ships took hits from gun fire. These cruisers did return fire. The Chokai took two hits. By shortly after 2:00 the battle was over. The Japanese regrouped and retreated northward. They left behind four Cruisers sunk with one badly damaged. The Japanese took minor damage from a few shells to two cruisers. It was only the beginning for these seven cruisers when the S-44 fired torpedos and sunk IJN Kako just before she arrived back at her base on New Ireland. By the end of the war all seven had been sunk.
