DESCENDANCYof

OTHO HOLLAND (b c1660) and MEHITABLE LARKIN (b c1666)Otho's parents may have been William Holland and Susan Norville

Mehitable's parents were John Larkin and Katherine (Holland?)

Note 1: material in smaller type is written by Barbara Ann Fisher (BFE), wife of Karl Frederick Edler Jr (KFE), while larger type material is primarily from our family history database maintained by KFE.

Note 2: names of direct ancestors of KFE are underlined.

Note 3: as with all early families, it's hard to be certain about much of the information available. For example, we haven't found proof that Otho's father was William Holland. Our presentation of the early generations seems to us the best theory currently available. Please read it for interest and as a starting point for further research.

I. Otho 1 Holland was probably born abut 1660 in VA. His parents may have been William Holland and Susan Norville . Otho married Mehitable Larkin about 1684; six children. She was born about 1666 Anne Arundel Co MD. Her parents were John Larkin and Katherine (Holland?).

Otho died early Feb 1701 Anne Arundel Co, age probably about 41. He was buried 12 Feb 1701 All Hallowes Parish, Anne Arundel Co.2

Mehitable married John Pierpoint before 1703 in MD; one child. His parents were Robert Pierpoint and Mary [Pierpoint]. Mehitable died after 1750 in MD,3 age probably at least 85.

OTHO's PROBABLE PARENTS -- William Holland was born about 1635 James City Co VA. He is thought to have come to Maryland about 1650 (when he was about 15) with John Larkin and others, from tidewater Virginia, at the invitation of Governor William Stone. Their first settlement was at Greenberry Point, then called Town Neck, between the Severn and South Rivers.

William Holland probably married Susan Norville about 1659. They probably had at least two children, including Otho and Daniel.

OTHO's PROBABLE GRANDPARENTS -- William Holland's father is said to have been Gabriel Holland. He was born about 1595/96 London. His parents were John Holland and Mary Mollenax .

There is a great deal of fascinating information available about Gabriel. He immigrated to America on the Supply which left Bristol 18 Sep 1620, a few weeks after her sister ship Mayflower. Not being blown off course, the Supply landed at Berkeley VA 8 Feb 1621.

Richard Holland, a brother or cousin who had accompanied Gabriel, was massacred on 16 Mar 1622 at the site of the Berkeley Hundred. Such events were almost commonplace, the settlers had to endure many tribulations, and for various reasons only a minority survived.

“All-People” {Table of Contents} Page 10b- 2 Known as a Yeoman, Gabriel was elected a Burgess, an office often held by prominent landowners.

He traveled extensively between Virginia and England 1621-1635 and became a well regarded factor. He probably married Rebecca George about 1621 in England; probably one child, George Holland. After Rebecca's death in Virginia about 1623, Gabriel probably married Mary Pink ; probably several

children, probably including William Holland, and possibly including Katherine (who married John Larkin).

GEORGE HOLLAND, thought to be Otho's uncle (half-brother of William), probably had no children of his own. In his will, proved 22 Jan 1685 Anne Arundel Co,1 George left property to his nephew Otho.

He also left 300 acres to his probable nephew Thomas Larkin, brother of Otho's wife Mehitable Larkin, Section 10a. Some think this was an indication that George was probably a half-brother of Otho's mother Katherine. If so, Otho Holland and Mehitable Larkin were first cousins.

EARLIER HOLLAND ANCESTORS -- John Holland, father of Gabriel Holland, was born about 1555/56 London. His parents were Henry Holland and Hyllary Barwarde . Henry was born about 1485 London.

Several researchers have traced the Holland family back to the fourteenth century and even earlier in England and, in some cases, to the Netherlands and Germany. Some cite connections to nobility and to royalty. A good deal of interesting information is available, some of it on the Internet.264 We are, however, not attempting to include any of it here because we aren't confident of much of the data.

MEHITABLE LARKIN

She was an innkeeper with her first and second husbands, and later alone, in Anne Arundel and Prince George's Counties MD. She was "a remarkable pioneering businesswoman in the Maryland colony".4 This was "in an era when women had duties instead of rights -- and their primary duties were to marry, bear and raise children, look after the home, and tend the hearth -- Mehitable was an exception."

Sometime after her marriage about 1684 to Otho Holland, the couple probably took over operation of her father's Inn at Londontowne on the South River in Anne Arundel Co. See Section 10a for more on the Londontowne Inn.

Mehitable and Otho had six children, but he died early Feb 1701, only a few weeks after the last child was born. She continued the operation until her second marriage about 1702 to John Pierpoint, a carpenter. They had a child, but John soon left her and the seven children without his having made any provision for them.

She was in a precarious position because she had no husband, yet was still legally married. She was forced to petition the court to allow her to continue the business as a single woman and to sue to recover the debts owed the Inn (some debtors had refused to pay, claiming she had no power of attorney from her absent husband).

Continuing to support herself and the children, she operated the inn and took care of sick and indigent individuals for Anne Arundel County Court until 1711 when she moved to Prince George's County. She was then granted a license to operate an Inn in Queen Anne, a tobacco port located at the Patuxent River crossing on the principal road (now long abandoned) between Annapolis and Upper Marlboro.

She successfully operated the Queen Anne Inn until 1719 when she was in her mid-50s. With two sons she purchased a small plantation called Cattail Meadows located in what is now known as South Bowie. She continued to supplement the family income by caring for sick indigents for the Prince George's County Court, and her name appeared in Maryland legal records into the 1750s.

Mehitable was a pioneering woman in colonial times, a single parent who supported her children through her own business enterprise and provided care to the poor long before a public welfare system was established.4

“All-People” {Table of Contents} Page 10b- 4 INFORMATION ABOUT COLLATERAL FAMILIES

Note: Our lineage is connected with many other early Maryland families, and these relationships can be confusing! We include a small amount of information about some of these other families in various places below and throughout this Section. Caution -- this material is FOR INTEREST ONLY, as we haven't verified much of it. We hope readers will find it interesting, and perhaps a starting point for further research.

-- Some information about the DUVALL family --(referenced on pages 10b-5, 10b-21, and 10b-24)

I. Mareen Duvall ("the immigrant") was born about 1630. About 1650 he came from Nantes, France, and settled near Col William Burgess in Anne Arundel Co MD on the South River. He "became one of the most successful merchants and planters in that section" and left a vast estate.30

He is said to have acted as an officer of the MD troops in an expedition against the Nantikoke Indians about 1678, and was reimbursed for at least some of his expenses. (Some think it may have been his son, Mareen Duvall the Elder, who commanded the troops.) About 1683 Mareen was made a Commissioner for laying out towns, selecting ports, etc. in Anne Arundel Co.

Mareen first married (--?--) [Duvall]; five children. Her name is not known, but she is said to have been "closely allied to the celebrated John Larkin, a neighbor and enduring friend of Mareen Duvall",37Section 10a.

OTHO HOLLAND WILLIAMS (b 1749) and MARY SMITHand their descendants

from page 10b-6Otho's parents were Joseph Williams and Prudence HollandMary's parents were William Smith and Elizabeth Buchanan

b. Otho Holland5 Williams, born 1 Mar 1749 Prince George's Co MD,19 married Mary Smith 18 Oct 1785 at the Baltimore MD home of her parents (William Smith and Elizabeth Buchanan), with Rev Patrick Allison officiating.19,20

Otho was a general on Washington's staff during the revolution. He died 15 Jun 1794 Woodstock VA, age 45, buried Riverview Cemetery, Williamsport, Washington Co MD.

"In his youth, Otho worked for, and then became, his county's Clerk. After a brief period as a merchant in Baltimore, he joined the Frederick City rifle corps in mid-1775. At the start of the Revolution, he served during the siege of Boston. In late 1776, he was wounded and captured at Ft Washington NY. There, the British regiment suspected him of espionage and imprisoned him for over a year in New York City.

"After his exchange, he fought at Monmouth and then joined the Continental Army's southern campaign, about which he later wrote a detailed narrative of the Campaign of 1780. He fought at Camden, Kings Mountain, Guilford Court House, Hobkirk's Hill, and Eutaw Springs, serving until the war's end.”

In the July 2007 issue of Smithsonian is an interesting article about General Nathaniel Greene and his (largely unsung) actions during the Revolutionary War. It tells about Otho Holland Williams' significant contribution to the success of the campaigns in the south. We note that Otho gave one of his sons the middle name of Greene.

"Elected naval officer of Baltimore in 1783, he later became customs collector for the port. He declined a recommission as the army's second-in-command in 1792 on the basis of ill health. The search for relief from earlier war injuries took him to Barbados. He returned to the United States and died in 1794",31 age about 45.

An item of interest is that he surveyed the town of Williamsport, laying out extra-wide streets. In 1790, Otho, his brother Elie, and George Washington discussed the possibility of Williamsport becoming the national capital.32

Otho was especially noted for his book about the war. A famous portrait of him, by Charles Wilson Peale, can be seen on the Internet.31

JAMES HOLLAND (b c1764) and HANNAH HAMMOND WELSH (b c1770)and their descendants

from page 10b-8James' parents were John Holland and Mary Gartrell

Hannah's parents were Charles Welsh and Sarah (Warfield?)

e. James5 Holland, born about 1764 in MD,187 married Hannah Hammond Welsh 3 Mar 1792; seven children. She was born about 1770. Her parents were Charles Welsh and Sarah (Warfield?), below.187

James died 12 May 1831,203 age about 67. Hannah died about two years after James, age about 63.Note: some researchers believe that James Holland married Sarah Welsh, a daughter of Capt John Welsh III.

The generational differences in their ages, however, seem to us to make that unlikely (see endnote 265 for further discussion).

According to the gift collection at the Maryland Archives, James and Hannah's sons Charles, Grafton, and Philip were well established at the time of their father's death. They made an indenture which transferred Rose Hill, the family manor, to their three maiden sisters for their lives or until such time as they might marry. As it happened, all three outlived their brothers and none of them married.

-- Some information about the HAMMOND family --

I. John Hammond may have married Mary Howard, whose father was Matthew Howard. John was a Burgess in Isle of Wight Co VA, but was expelled about 1652 for his Cavalier attitudes, and came to Anne Arundel Co MD. John Hammond and Matthew Howard were involved in the 1655 Battle of the Severn, in which the Protestants fought to avoid being exiled (because they would not attend the Anglican church). John became a Major General in the Western Shore of MD, and died about 1707. Some of the dates concerning him are confusing, but much information is available about this most interesting time.

A. Charles Hammond married Hannah Howard, whose parents were Philip Howard and Ruth Baldwin. 1. John Hammond married Anne Dorsey (parents Col Edward Dorsey Jr and Margaret Larkin, page 10b-20).

a. Hannah Hammond (26 Apr 1723->1779) married Capt John Welsh III, page 10b-28.i. Charles Welsh married Sarah (Warfield?), above.

a) Hannah Hammond Welsh married James Holland, above.Note: Matthias Hammond, builder of the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis,42 may have been a brother or

nephew of Charles Hammond, but we are not sure of the connection. Further research could be enjoyable.

This is one of the saddest families we have found, in terms of children's deaths. We note the month of July 1851, when Stephen and Rebecca lost four of their children, probably

in an epidemic. Of seven children alive at the beginning of the month, only three survived. (One child had already died in infancy. The youngest child was not yet born but later also died in infancy.)

I. Edward Dorsey Sr of Middlesex, England,187 born about 1620, emigrated to Virginia before 1646 and worked as a shipwright. He married Anne [Dorsey]. He died in 1659 near Kent Island MD, age about 39. Court records in Anne Arundel Co 2 Aug 1659 are said to refer to a salvaged boat "wherein Darcy and some others were drowned near the Isle of Kent".

Edward's parents may have been Sir Conyers D'Arcy of Hornby (created Baron D'Arcy by King Charles I in 1641) and Dorothy Bellasye. The D'Arcy line is said to be traced back to the late 13th century in Lincolnshire and Sir John D'Arcy, Barron of Knaith.25 Recent DNA tests of descendants, however, appear to suggest that Edward may have had Irish roots rather than English.

BFE also remembers visiting there, with KFE's mother, in the late 1950s or early 1960s when the Sampson family lived there.

I. Major John Welsh, probably born in England, was an early settler and officeholder in Anne Arundel Co. He acquired several plantations, and was a Commissioner in 1667, a Justice in 1667 and 1676, and High Sheriff 1678-79. In 1678 he was instrumental in defeating the Indians in the Nanticoke War, and he received 1000 acres as a reward.

He married Anne [Grosse] about 1670. She was the widow of Roger Grosse, with whom she had son Sylvester, included by John in his will as one of his own children. She died about 1675.

Secondly, John married Mary Wyatt. He died about 1683/84, when Mary was expecting the youngest child.Probably seven children in two marriages: John II, Benjamin, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Demaris, and Robert

(born posthumously; married Katherine Lewis; nine children). It has been said that Major John Welsh was born 1605, but this seems unlikely when the dates of other

events in his life are taken into consideration. Perhaps his father, name not known to us, was born in that year.

A. Col John Welsh II, born about 1672, married Thomasin Hopkins 13 Mar 1700 All Hallows, Anne Arundel Co. Her father was Gerard Hopkins. John was an iron shipper, merchant, and justice and county commissioner of Anne Arundel Co 1726-1733. Secondly, John married Rachel Hammond about 1715. Her parents were John Hammond and Ann Greenberry. John died about 1733, age about 61.

First marriage, at least one child: Sarah (married Samuel Warfield). Second marriage, perhaps seven children including: John III, Thomas, Benjamin, Rachel, Comfort, and Sophia.

1. Capt John Welsh III, born 3 Feb 1719/20, married Hannah Hammond about 1741. She was born about 1723. Her parents were John Hammond and Anne Dorsey, page 10b-20. John Hammond's parents were Charles Hammond and Hannah Howard, pages 10b-14 and 10b-20 and Section 10a. John Welsh III died before 16 Dec 1784, age probably about 62.

Six children: the three below plus Sarah, Phillip, and Samuel.

a) Anne Welsh married Lewis Duvall about 1763. His parents Lewis Duvall II and Eleanor Farmer.Lewis II's parents were Capt John Duvall and Elizabeth Jones. John's parents were Mareen Duvall and his first wife, page 10b-4. Anne died before 9 Aug 1825.

Eleven children: Betsy (abt 1763, died young); John (abt 1774, married Jane Wyvill); Philip (married Mary Lovejoy); Lewis Jr; Hammond; Nancy; Ruth (married (--?--) Wyvill); Elizabeth (married Lewis Owens); Asenath; Hannah (married Edward Willet Benson); and Delilah (married James Lawson).

i. Lewis Duvall Jr, born about 1775, married Sarah Wyvill. a) Mareen Duvall.

a) Emanuel Madison Duvall married Susan A Penn.i) Martha Virginia Duvall married Aden Darby Allnutt -- see Section 12a.

b. Charles Welsh, born about 1741-44, married Sarah (Warfield?). He died before 10 Jan 1814, age probably about 70. Her surname is thought to be Warfield because Charles had some property which, it is believed, was inherited by Sarah from the Warfield family, presumably from her father.

Nine children: Henry (about 1765); Hannah Hmmond (about 1770); John (about 1775); Walter (about 1787); Phillip (about 1788); Warren (about 1790); James (about 1795); Rezin; and Ann.

264. One example of the stories about the ancestors of our Otho Holland: Robert de Holand married Maud La Zouche; thirteen children. He was knighted 1307, beheaded 1328. We recommend reading histories. Note: this is for interest only.

265. Some researchers believe that James Holland's wife was Sarah Welsh, citing a book on the Dorsey family seen at the Historical Society in Philadelphia. That data implies that Sarah was a daughter of John Welsh III, but it seems to us impossible that a woman in that generation could bear seven children after 1792. Perhaps Sarah was a granddaughter through John IV or another Welsh family line, but we haven't identified a candidate.

Sources are conflicting. The LDS IGI lists a 1792 marriage between a James Holland and a Sarah Welsh in either Lycoming Co PA or Frederick Co MD, and doesn't list a marriage for James and Hannah. The Clarks of Maryland book indicates that Charles Welsh left money in his will to his daughter Hannah, wife of James Holland, but the will isn't shown and the source isn't given. A confirmed headstone viewing might help solve the identy of James' wife, but their place of burial isn't known. We plan to search further for documents such as wills and land transfers, in hopes of resolving the question.
