DIRECTORS' REPORT
Fellow Members:
Once again it is our pleasure to submit for your approval and adoption the Directors' Report for the Half-year
ended 7th March, 1959.
1. Sales.—In order to facilitate the business of the Society, it was decided to alter the Half-year ending and, a~you wiB be aware, this ended on the 7th March, 1959, and made the Half-year only 23 weeks. The sales for these 23weeks amounted to 62,637,290. 4s. lid. , and compared with 23/26 of the 1958 figure it shows an increase of
8119,062. 9s. Od. , or 4.73 per cent. As you will appreciate, it is very difficult to get a proper comparison but we feel
that the increase as shown is fairly accurate. It will be 12 months before we are on a proper comparison, but your
Directors are satisfied with the progress we are making. The policy of meeting competition in the Grocery Department
has meant a continued tucrcam in Grocery sales. We would draw the members' attention to the very competitive prices
and the special otfers that we have fortnightly should be an addoi attraction.
The aoancid strength of the Society has been further increased and the Reserve Fund now stands at 6176,000.
In spite of the development that is taking place, the amount of members' Sharc Capital re-invested in Government and
other securities amounts to 80 per cent. We would point out the easy methods available of saving within the Society—
Share Account, Loan Account, and a six months' notice of withdrawal Loan Account. Full details of these can be
obtained from the General Otfice but we would like to impress on the members the necessity of using the Society as
custodians of their smail savings.

2. Dividend. —The dividend has again been maintained at ls. 4tL in the K. We would like, however, to draw the
attention of our members to the fact that the C.W.S. have reduced their dividend from 3d. to 2eL which makes a con-
siderable diifetcnce to the income of this Society. We are also carrying out price reduction policies in our Grocery and,
naturally, this also has an effect on the smplus available for dividenrL The dividend of ls. 4d. is well above the nafionai
average which is now less than ls. in the K. It is possible that your Board may have to reduce the dividend sfightly m
the future but ~g possible will be done to give our members a reasonable mturn on their purchasm.
3. Membership. —The membership of the Society now stands at 54,017, being a decrease of 626. Durmg ~Half-year we have written oif 1,408 accounts of people who have ceased trading and have only a shilling or two in their~, ;:Sharc Book. A large number of these were m the Spalding area and the membership, as stated above is now a true onc.
These amounts written oil have been transferred to the Unclaimed Share Balance Account in the Bahnce ShccL This~
as you wiff no doubt realise, accounts for the decrease in membership.
A year ago we drew the members' attention to the many facilities available such as Library, free Death ~'~errGuild activities, Educational classes, etc. We asked any member interested to get in touch with the Managing Sccrcuuy
but, unfortunately, no member sent in for any details. May we once again say that these various projects are for your
benefi t, and we do invite you to make the fuffest usc of these free services.
4. Development. —(a) High Street, Grocery and Furnishing. Alterations have been made to these shops and wefeel justly proud of the results. High Street Grocery is now, in our opinion, onc of the finest shops in the city and wehave spared no expense in making these shops a credit to the Society. We are hoping that the capital expenditure will-have a reward in increased sales as we are of the opinion that our members descrvc modern premises. Most of theSociety's shops have been modernised in some way or another during the past 10 years and we will continue to makeour shops attractive.
(b) A.E.U. Site. You will have noted the progress that is being made on the A.E.U. site and building operationsthere are weB up to schedule. The Board have given the question of the departments to be housed there further con-sideration and it has been decided to make this a complete furniture and allied department. In other words, the ncw
— building will house, amongst other departments, Hardware, China and Glass, Nursery Furniture, Prams, Cycles, urniture, Bedding, Floor Coverings, Grates, Bathroom fixtures and fittings, Plumbers' merchants goods ll Electrical
ds,, a
goo, etc. A complete list of the departments in the new building will be advertised at a later date and you will alsobe kept informed through the Directors' Report. It was felt that the Furnishing Dcpartmcnt, which has such large sake,is working under the most ditficult conditions. As you will be aware, they are housed in the Old Chapel, Silver Street, where the amenities are shocking. When the ncw store is opened ait departments appertaining to furniture will be
oused under the one roof and, as stated in previous reports, the Office will be on the top floor. We have given thistitnatter very careful consideration and think that this will be the best initial move in the rebuilding of our central premises.
5. We have received from the Co-operative Union details of the Society's sales per member in comparison with the
rmt of the Movement and we have pleasure in submitting these figures for yow approval. In 1956 the members of Lincoln
Society spent an average of 698.9 in comparison with the average of thc rest of the country of f71.5. In 1957 the average
expenditure of Lincoln Society's members was 6104.1 per annum in comparison with 875.2 for the rest of the country.
This, in our opinion, shows the loyalty of the membership of the Society.
6. Several esteemed employees of the Society have, during the Half-year, suffered severe illnesses. We can
instance Mr. Bucknall, a member of the Education Committee and also Chief Clerk in our Wages Department.
Mr. Cash, a Dairy employee, who is retiring on an incapacity pension, and several other valuable employees. Wc trust
that each and every one of them wi11 be quickly restored to health and can assure them of all practical help from the
Board of Directors.
7. Retirements. —During the Half-year three well-known employees reached retirement age.
Mr. Foster, Branch Manager at Ingham, is retiring after nearly 40 years with the Society. We understand that it
is his intention to leave the district and live in the South of Enghnd and we wish him and Mrs. Foster a long and happy
retuement.
Mr. Marshall, the foreman at the Abattoir, has reached retirement age but he is continuing to work at the Slaughter-
house in a temporary capacity as an asslstam. We wish him and Mrs. Marshall wefi.
Mr. Hoyle has retired from the Branch Managership of the Moorland Drapery Department and herc again we
would like to record our appreciation and wish him and his wife a long and happy retirement.
8. Obituary. —It is with deep regret that we have to inform you of the deaths of the following Superannuated
employees: —Mr. George Cammack, aged 88 years, former Confectionery Manager, and Mr. John Winder, 70 years of
age, former employee in the Works Department. We extend to their relatives and friends our sincere condolences.
Yours faithfully, for and on behalf of the Directors,
J. H. MANSFIELD, President.
DUNCAN McNAB, Managing Sccrctary.

EDUCATION COMMITTEEsS REPORT
FOR HALF-YEAR ENDED 7th MARCH, 1959
Fellow Members,
We submit for your consideration the Education Committee's Report and Accounts for the period ending 7th March, 1959
Iatreducgen. —The period under review has been one of intense activity and changing phases. We are pleased to report our work
is wider in scope, and as evidence the current statistics from the Co-operative Union show the Lincoln Society has made one the
biggest increases in Education activity in the Midland section. These factors are particularly brought out in the spheres
training, adult education, and cultural groups. The changing phases are most apparent in the personnel of the Education Comlljy.
Our colleague Mr. W. Bucknall continues to show his tenacity and good spirits in meeting his serious illness, and we await with
great expectation his return to full health and C~perative life. This half-year has also seen the retirement of Mr. T. Sergeant,
a stalwart who will be greatly missed, and also Mr. W. H. ScoSns. We are pleased to note the election of Mrs. I. M. Cle to
the Board of Directors, aud sve record our thanks for the services rendered to Cooperative Education by these members.
Staif~—With the full co-operation of the Board of Directors employee training has shown remarkable increases sg
the Autumn and Winter months. Your Society has operated all the provisions outlined in our last report and we are pleased to say
as a result of evening classes arranged by the Society and the Lincoln Technical College, over 60 employees of all grades in retail
employment have undertaken Co-operative and trade examinations. In addition to this, specialist courses of a three-days' intensive
nature have been organised by the Society, with National Instructors from the Co-operative College over a period of a month, in
the Techniques of Customer Approach. These courses applied to staif in the Dry Goods trade.
Initiation Courses for junior intake have continued during the balf-year and now form an established patt of the Society's
policy in the smoothmg of the passage of school leavers joining the employ of the Society.
Member Education. —Under this heading we can report a considerable increase in activity. Accentuation in this Beld is two-fold:
Srst, to concentrate on the promotion of classes in Consumer Education, where we feel Co-operative Education has a particula
part to play, and at the same time contribute to the wider issues with which the Movement is confronted in combating the private
trade. Consumer chases have been operated at Spalding (subject: "Design in our Homes "), and at Sleaford (subject: "Colour
pattern ").Both these courses attracted a good response. A further dass at North Hykeham (subject: "Buying your Food Wisely
and Well ")did not materislbm mainly because of the bad weather in January and diSculty of the venue.
A~Weekend School was~for mmnbers at pilgrim's College, Boston, in late February; the subject,"problems
of Retail Distribution, "and the Lecturer, Mr. Cynog Jones, OJLE., Research O15cer, U.SLM..W.
The Joint Conference with tbe I C.S. operative party in late January with Mr. L. Cornillie, National Organiser, South
West and Western Sections, as the speaker was appreciated by those present.
The Discixmon Gmups held at Guild Branches as the second of our new ventures to formulate ~putative thscixm
the members. We wish to thank those guilds who assisted us to inaugurate this work and look forward to their contmued support.
Public Relations. —This new addition to our programme has pmved popular amongst the members. The members mgh
proved a stimnlus to Co-operative activity in the ames visited. Five such events have been held during the winter at Ermme
Estate, Swanpool, Saxilby, North Hykebam, and Welton. The Education Committee wishes to thank the Directom and ail who
have helped to make these nights a success.
Further to this, the fortnight of C.W.S.Film Shows in the country districts were well received and continue to help the Society
to combat local and TV advetising.
Cultural Activities. —The wisdom of forming a Girls' choir at Swanpool and a Drama group based at NewporL m
brought forth early successes which could not have been anticipated, and we wish to place on record our thanks to Mr M ~caster, Mrs. Birkett with the Girls' choir, and Mr. T.Pickering, Drama producer, as well as members of these grouPs for th ~they have brought to the Society. Girls' Choix: Whmam of the Grahtsborough Coopemtive Music Festival and secon&%-+
Lincoln FestivaL operative Players: Trophy ~Lincoln FestivaL
The Senior Choir, on the other hand, have not been as fortunate and it was widi some regret we receiVed the ieshp
Mr. Hindmsrsh at his own request. At the time of reporting strtmuous etforts are being made to maintain this choir. YomJggP
mittee will reach a decision in tbe next few weeks.
Guild Activities. —In this regard renewed co-operation appears to be the keynote. A su~ Gtdld Drama F~ .Quiz, and Public Speaking Competition have been held. We thank all who helped us in these events and look forward to co ~~sllpport m the future.

D1RECTORS' REPORT
Fellow Members:
It is once again our pleasure to submit for your approval and adoption the Directors' Report I'or the Half year
ended 5th September, 1959.
1. Sales.—As was pointed out in the March Report, it is difficult to compare sales due to the change in the Half'
year endings. We are, however, pleased to report that for the 26 weeks ended 5th September the sales amounted t
f2,867,201, being an increase of f116,215 or 4.2 per cent in comparison with 1958. It will be at least a further six months'~
before we are on proper comparative figures.
In spite of the large amount of capital expenditure to which the Society is subject due to the rebuilding of the central
premises, it is pleasing to report that we have not increased the amount of our buildhtgs, fixtures and fittings this Half
year and have managed to depreciate what we have spent. This is a most healthy sign and we are hoping that, in spi~of the development which we will be undertaking in the next few years, our capital position will remain strong aud ths,
we will be able to write off the rebuilding more or less as it is taking place. The financial strength has never been better~~r'
and the Reserve Fund now stands at f180,000.
We invite members to invest their surplus capital in the Society where their savings are fully guaranteed. In this
matter we would like to bring to your notice the new loan which we are offering to members of 3$ per cent at six months'
notice of withdrawal. We recommend this investment which gives safety, security and an excellent rate of interest.

2. Memlterthip. —The membership now stands at 56,022, being an increase of 555 for the Quarter. We wekome
the new members and woukl invite them, if they are in any doubt as to where they can purchase certain items or if there
is any information they require, to contact the Managing Secretary or the Public Relations Oificer who will tet them
have the n~ informat5on.
3. IBvidea&—We have pleasure once again in reco~ a dividend, of ls. 4tL, in the f. Wd are extmmely
phstsed that we have been able to maintain the dividend in sp'ite of the, large comniitments which we hav'e had to face
this Half-year. A new wage agreement came into force on 3rd July so, therefore, we have orily hsd an increase for mne
weeks during the Half-yesr. Expenses other than wages also keep increasing and our accounts for rates, ehsctnmty,
gas transport, etc., have shown quite a considerable increase during the past 12 months. Over certain of these expenses
we have no control but where it is possible for us to control expenses everyting po'ssitfie is being done to work «tficientiy
and economicsfiy. Our dividend at ls. 4d. is considerably above the national average which has now druPp'ed to 10tk
in the f. In considering the dividend, first importance is given to the financial strength of the Society and it is extremely
gratifying once again to be able to pay ls. 4d. in the f.4. Dewdepmetrt. —(a) Central Premises.
'Excellent progress is being made in the rebuildmg of the central prendses
and the building on the A.F U. site is now tskhtg shape. It is dfificult to fomcast and give an accurate date when these
premises will be open but, sll being well, they should be open in the Sprmg of next year. We.mentioned in the Inst Report
several of the departments which would be housed in the new building. These htciude Hardware, adna and G~Nursery Furniture, Prams, Cycles, Toys, Travel Goods, all forms of Furruture, Bedding, Floor CovermgA
Bathmom Fixtures aml Fittings, phunbers' Merchants' Goods and all Electrical goods. In the meantime, we wo
like to inform you that you can get all your requhements fmm these epaatnmmts in Silver Street and Free School Lsrg-
There is a stock of grates, etc., at our Works Department in~Street.
(b) Slesford. The Society's trade continues to increase in the Seaford area and we are at present building a n+Dry Goods Store which is situated in the main shopping ~uthgate. Here again we will let our Sleaford mern+ ()t
have details at a later date.
(c) Reepham. Durmg the past Hall'-yesr we have completely renovated the shop premises at Reepham.
fixtures have been installed and we feel that the members in fius area will now appreciate having a modem shi&p in
which to tmde.4
5. RetiremenS. —At the hst Quarterly Mccting the president asked that thc appreciation of the Society to Mr. W.
Marshall, the Furnishing Manager, bc recorded in thc minutes. M . Marsbag t md 5th Sc b, ft bu . r. te t on ptem r, a r aving
g v Y cc o the Society. The Furnishing Department, which he managed, has grown tremendously due in
no small measure to the work and energy of Mr. Marshall. We wish him and Mrs. Marshall a very long and haPPY
retirement and we thank him for the services which he gave so faithfully.
To fifi the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. Marshall, tbe department has been split —Mr. F.Harrison taking
control of all furniture, carpets, linos, hardware, glass and china and bedding, while Mr. F. Billings has become manager
of the toys, prams, cycles, nursery funuture and travel goods. Both thee mcm have bccn with the Society for a con-
siderable number of years, and we wish them well in their new appointment. They will shortly be going to the new
building where they will have excellent scope. in which to show their capabilities. l
iMr. S. H. Ward, Charge-hand Joiner at the Works Department, has retired after 33 vears with the Society and wc
ish bim and his wife a long and happy retirement. He has taken charge of many jobs and been responsible for carrying
out many first-class alterations to shops during his service with thc Society.
Mr. A. Beeston has retired from the Society's service after serving lg years in thc Hairdressing Departnicnt. Hc
is well known to the many people who use our Hairdressing Department and was undoubtedly one of the best hair-
~dressers in Lincoln. We wish him and Mrs. Becston many happy years of retirement.
Mr. G. Cash, who suffered an accident at the Dairy some time ago, has, unfortunately, had to retire on an incapacity
pension. We trust that his health wifi improve and that he and bis wife will have a long and happy retirement.
6. Hire Pmcbase. —We would respectfully draw your attention to the fact that you can buy furniture, carpets,
prams, wireless, television, clothing, and in fact almost all commodities on Hire Purchase. Tbe Society's intcrcst terms
are outstanding, the interest rate being as low as 5 per cent per annum. In many other orgsnisations you will find that
this rate is doubled and we would recommend you to come along and take on hire purch~asc your requirements fiorn"
your own Society. In the Electrical Departmtmt television sets can bc purchased over a throe-year term. Thc weekly
repayments are very similar to rental agrcemetm, the difFerence being the set becomes your own property at the end of
three years, whereas under rental agreements it never becomes your own property. With hire purchase we have some.
thing to shout about and we would be pleased if you will tell your neighbours about our terms which are unbeatable.
Yours faiithfully, for and on behalf of the Director,
J, H. MANSFIELD, Prcsidcni.
