ALLIES STILL ADVANCE&fo.

Another Year of Splendid Progress.

Secretary's Report.

The ivar is responsible for many things, positive and negative,

among others the decision of the Board to forego the usual festival,

though the year has been one of progress and advancement all along

ihe line.

Niever i&efoie since the Annual ibleeting was inaugurated, has

iliere bein a break in the succession, but extraordinary events

bring about extraordinary results. As the years come and go «ach

report is better than the last, so again i 9r 4, from a business stand-

point, has been the most prosperous during the fifty-three years of

the Society's existence.

The total amount received for goods sold is $413,402 (53 weeks)

being an increase of &rz6,792 over the previous year. I &338

new members have;oined the Society since our last Festival, which,

after allowing far all removals through various causes, brings our

total membership to i4,g75 who owu Share Capital amounting to

e 243, i g i. These people have during the year contributed

Lzg, xzb, towards this huge sum, but they have withdrawn 657,476

and yei they have standing to their credit /xi, 553, more than they

had twelve months ago. The man in the street, the non-member

would say, how is it done? This is one of the secrets of 'co-opera-

tion, we become richer while we sleep, the more we spend the morc

we save.

It is gratifying to know that our Society is known throughout

the movement as one of the soundest from a finaucial standpoint,

and we owe a debt of gratitude to those who have made the founda-

tions so sure. This year we have depreciated our land and buildings,

.fixed stock, Ac., s 5,36x, and increased our Reserves until they stand

at gi8, 624, A64x more than a year aga. After allowing for all

other charges 632,500 has been given to the members as dividend,

The boys and girls, the future members, have increased their holding

in the Society through their savings in the Penny Bank by sex43,

their present claim now standing at +3i,537.

One of the objects of the movement is to secure control of the

means of production. We have grown, and produced for ourselves

goods to the value of about srxzo, ooo.

Again, thanks to those who have gone before, our Soci'ety has

the distingui hed honour of being foremost in taking co-operation

inta the country districts, and, af the total business done last year,

Xrx25&oao has been done in the Agricultural districts, and in return

more than 6 xo,5ao has been distributed among our members there.

We have purchased from our country members xi2, x85 lbs. of

butter and goo,ooo eggs, and have paid for these 6 xo&268.

Duringtheyear we have advanced to members in town and

country, to pur'chase thtfir own houses, sr x,6393 andthey have repaid

during that time jxx&795, leaving a balance against them of

gxo5, 865 out ofa total of srzo3, 6x4 advanced since March, x883.

The growth of the Society has rendered extensive alterations

necessary in regard to our mill apd bakery. The min& which some

years ago was equipped with the most up-to-date machinery for a

I'our sack plant, had. become totally inadequate by continuous

running to supply the reqxdsements of our members. Structural

alterations have beeneaeseae 'ytaaecommodate additional machmexy

to produce six sacks per hom';"w'hick is now running vxsiy satkx..

factorily. Another addition hexes Iteem a provender mill, xxnd the

electric drive adopted, thus ensxnilxxg eesxxxilmesa anil ~

For King and Country,

England's call has met with a magnificent response from all

classes and conditions af the people: ' coolr's sans", and 'duke' s

sons, ' are comrades in anne fighting one common foe. Coming

nearer home, it is very gratifyin'g to find how splendidly our own

employees have heard and obeyed the calh Our gallant fellows,

impelled by the one sacred call of duty, hav'c Iiid down the pen,

have left the caunter, the stables, the mill, the buildings, and the

farm for the motherland.

They have enlisted under the fiag that stands for freedom and

liberty. As a Society we are immensely proud df them, we know

tbely will 'do their duty, atsd play their part wxdg' and thus' da. 'some-

thing to bring this terrible war to an erid. We bear of one or two

cases of our men being waunded, vee hope tliere' will be hin

worse than this, but that everyone mill, .in the near fnture, be backagain to take his pasition in the Saciety's' em'play where the leftoff. In the mearithxxe, the goofiwishea of aII-aur vxsfdevs. vflII Follow

them, with a prayer far their speedy retxxrn.

The bakery ovens have long been obsolete, and in their place a

travelling oven and automatic plant for bread making and baking

has been inaugurated of the very latest design which we are fully

confident will prove a valuable new asset to the Society.

But the objects of our Society are two-fold; it not only helps

the iuemhers financiall, giving them a balance at the bank, and

through that an independance they never dreamed of, bui it seeks the

Social and intellectual advancement of its members, aud, for this

end more than $4oo has been voted to the Educational Department,

who have in many ways —music, boolis, gymnastic exercises,

nursing, S.c., catered for all, and relieved considerably the monotony

snd drabness of many a life.

Another sphere of activity which de erves special mention is the

Sick Room Appliance Department. This, the memorial of the

Society's Jubilee, is an ever growing success, and is practicalfy self-

supporting. Indeed, no words of praise are too strong in' xe&fxsxence

to this work Its success may be measured fxaxn the fact that

while in the first year of its existence 777 article's we'reilisss&et8afpr

loan, the last report gave ax i 7 articles had gone foh as angels" of

mercy, smoothing many a pillow, and easing much suffering and pain.

Truly the year has been one of unqualified success. Who has

done it? Not one, not a few, brains and hands and hearts have

been at work in a worthy cause. From the highest official to the

youngest employee, each and all have contributed a part, each and

every Committee of either sex has had for its object the furtherance

of the Society, we can spare none, we need ev'ery help, all are allies

in a great cause, in a peaceful revolution which is doing much to

regenerate the workers of our land. But the members are the

steam, the powder and shot, they are the propelling power, and by

increased loyalty to principle, a fair wage, good conditions to our

work-people, always remembering that quality is the test of cheap-

ness, it is in our power to make this year the best yeax of a11. .

but one good tiiing !ias been done by them, and that is the splendid

Concert ~given by them m the Central Hall, in aid of the Belgian

Local Relief Fund. The Concert was presided over by the Mayor

Prices and Freights —Hovv the People arebeing Robbed —Co-operation and Party

Politics. One of the most serious things we have to face at the present

time is the rise in the price of food and other necessaries of life.

Since August zst, flour has risen thirteen shillings a quarter, with aconsequent rise in the price of bread, of which we may not yet have

seen the end. Coal has advanced, and is still advancing. Frozen

meat has advanced one-third in price. Fish is almost prohibitive,

and eggs are now practically a luxury. The most serious, of course,

is the advance in the price of bread, because this hits hardest the

very poor, while noae can wholly escape.

Let us examine the causes which are operating to make bread

dear. And first, there are some causes which reflect no discredit on

anyone. For instance, the war has practically closed to us the

Russian wheat market. How important this is will be seen from

the fact that in ordinary times Russia sends us same stxteen or

seventeen million quarters of vrheat, which the closing of the

Dardenelles, through our being at war with Turkey, has hindered

from reaching us. There is some talk of transporting Russian wheat

trirz Roumania, Servia, and Greece: but even if that is possible, some

time must elapse before the necessary arrangements can be made.

The absence of Russian wheat is a competitive factor withdrawn

from the market, which is inducing American wheat growers and

factors to bold on for a rise, and this is no doubt somewhat affecting

prices. That, too, is a matter beyond our controL We cannot

'compel the Americans to sell their wheat, although their power of

holding it back is strickly limited by financial and ecooomic

considerations.

But their is another factor which is operating to make food

and other commodities dear, and that is high. shipping freights.

How enormously these have increased may be seen from the

following fact. Last oumtftor, before the war broke out, ~heat was

shipped fromtheArgentiuottt this country for rts. 3d por ton.

Since Christmas as mnch as fiqs. per ton has been paid. This

enormous rise in freights is in no wise due to war risk. for t eh

insurance rates wonld only account for an infinitesimal portion

ofthe rise. The explanation is quite simple. The British Navy

has swept German shipping off the seas. Now the German ship:-

were the most formidable competitors of English shipping

companies, and in the absence of that competition, the English

shipping companies have the field practically to themselves, and

hence can charge vrhat freights they please. Ir. point of fact, the

British Navy, which is paid for by all ratepayers alike, is enabling

the British shipping companies to wring extortionate profits out of

British consumers.

Now there are three steps the Government could take to brealr

down the extortion of the shipping rings. A number of vessels are

being used in which to intern prisoners of war. Other arrangenients

could be made for accommodating the prisoners, and the ships

returned to commercial uses. There are a large number of German

ships captureil or interned in British Ports. The Governnient

could itself use these ships for importing food, and thus lower the

freights to reasonable proportious. Also it could agree to the

purchase by the American Government of the German ships lying

in American waters. These various measures, particularly the-

second, would break down the monopoly, and prevent the success

of the British Navy from being turned against the British people

by rings of British shipowners.

Incidentally, this increase of shipping freights duo to the.

absence of the German merchantile fleet from the seas, shows that

the idea of permanently destroying German trade, not merely during

the war, but after the war, so much talked of by our yellow Press,

would, if it were possible, only redound to the capitalist interest.

The people at large would have to pay the piper in increased prices.

For thus are the principles of Free Trade vindicated. Finally, 1st

us say that there is no real reason either for the rise in the price of

bread or coal. The world requirements of grain are 66,zfio, ooo

quarters, and the world supplies are 74,9y6rooo quarters. It is

obvious, from such figures, that there is no real' shortage of corn.

So with coal. The export trade in house coal has. Ia'igely ceased.

If anything, therefore, house coal should be cheaper"and' not dearer.

It is true that many miners have enlisted. But there is no shortageof coal. The people are being robbed. That is the platii fact,

CO OPERATIVE NEWS

Co-operative Employment.A TRIBUTE.

With regard to the conditions of employment in the Co.oper.ative Societies, the following tribute has been paid by the Trade.

Union of Shop Assistants, which has now over too, ooo membere

including many in the Co-operative service:—

"It is as vrell that our members should clearly understand the

situation. Co-operative employees have much greater security of

employment than those employed in private trades. Their rates. ofpay and general conditions of employment are largely regulated bythose surrounding them engaged in the same calling, but under adifferent form of trading. Generally speaking, Co-operativeemployees in the distributive trades work less hours on the average.than those in private trade. The wages for these less hours arenearly the same, though occasionally a little above the average paid

by other forms of trading. Whenever by the organised efforts ofthose employed in private trade the conditions of employment areimproved, the conditions of Co-operative employees within thatarea automatically improve with them. A large number of em-

ployees who are Trade Unionists in the service of the Co-operative'Societies have far greater personal liberty accorded them to takepart in public life than those employed in priyate trading. TradeUnionist shareholders of Co-operative Societies have repeatedlyurged employees in their service to take an active part in the TradeUnion established for their calling. The 'employee's acflvlty 'in tbiedirection has actually been encouraged', and. inotrsad of,,as frequentlyhappens in private trade, the 'employer, being' antaganistic 'to' suchaction, it is geneially welconioil by. being extensively used throughout Europe, or, were before the war

broke out. Russia (though by no means the largest) having up-

being the pioneer in this country of inaugurating a movement for

enabling small agriculturalists by combining their credit to obtain

small loans for agricultural purposes on easy terms. This Society, formed zs years ago, has granted loans amounting in all to nearly

$3,ooo.The purposes for which the money has been granted has been

to enable borrowers to buy cows, sheep, lambs, pigs or seed, or to

hold over stock or corn for better prices. As Mr. Dawes, the Secretary of the Society at tVelbcurn, truly

says, "it is a pity that Credit Societies are not established in every

village. " It only reqnires a little effort and a lead to bring about

that which will help many shard worker over a stile, and enable

him to receive the full fruition of his labours.Any further particulars will be gladly supplied by the Secretary,

DEItITISTRY and CHEMISTRY.Will members kindly note that the Committee have made

arrangements for their requirements in Dentistry and Cheiuisiry tobe supplied by the following busines houses upon which full
