CHEM1010/General Chemistry_________________________________________
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Today’s Outline..Syllabus and course description
..How to win
..You have chemistry with chemistry
..It is matter that matters
..Basic theme of chemistry
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Syllabus And Course Description-Read the syllabus very carefully
-Your textbook (a keeper)
-Course design and grading
-Lecture schedule
chapter, pages, contents, quiz, exam
-Lecture notes
-Your responsibilities
attendance, reading, homework, questions
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• How To Win? -Attend the lectures
-Be active in class
-Read the textbook
-Do homework
-Ask questions and come for help
-Do well with quizzes
-Do well with exams
-Learn from your experiences
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• You Have Chemistry With Chemistry
-Everyone has curiosity, and curiosity about material things
-Everyone likes to make a sense of the things around you
-Language is a basic instinct of people, and chemistry is one kind of language
-Find more yourself
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• It is Matter That Matters
-Matter or things are all around us and within us
-Natural things
-Artificial or industrial things
-Things in our Earth and things far away
-Things we know, and things we don’t know yet
Mountain and Clouds
Forest
Flower and leaves
Lake and Forest
Oxisol: A Red Soil in Tropical Regions
Ultisol:CommonRed Soil in TN
Iceberg and Titanic
Beach and Sand
Yosemite
Mineral: Quartz (SiO2)
Cinnabar: HgS
Mineral: Roselite
Chinese Medicine
James Bond Car
Chimney with Nasty Smoke
Nasty Discharge to a River
Our Solar System
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• It is Matter That Matters
-Things are different
-Things are changing
good changes and changes we want
healthy food, medicine, materials, clean water
bad changes and changes we try to avoid
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• It is Matter That Matters
Now, we can’t help asking some questions:
-Why are things different?
-What make things differ from each other?
-Why are things changing?
-What drive things changing?
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry Let money talk
How to make changes?How many basic money elements?Answer: coins (p, n, d, q, dl)
bills (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200)
Music: A keyboard Instrument
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry Dreams by Langston Hughes
Hold fast to dreamsFor if dreams dieLife is a broken-winged birdThat cannot fly
Hold fast to dreamsFor when dreams goLife is a barren fieldFrozen with snow
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry
Ozone Chemistry by Sidney Chapman
O2 + hv = O + O
O + O2 = O3
O3 + hv = O + O2
O3 + O = O2 + O2
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry
Something happened in Coke
CO2 + H2O = H2CO3
H2CO3 = H+ + HCO3-
HCO3- = H+ + CO3

Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry
A basic theme is emerging:
We can use some basic elements to compose various things, such as in the cases of money, music (keyboard), and language.
Chemistry is a language.
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry
For a language, we can ask these questions:
What are the basic letters of English? How do the letters become the
language of English? (letter, words, sentences, paragraph, and so on)
What is the grammar (rules and laws)?
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry
Likewise, we can ask the similar questions about matter:
What are the basic elements for matter? How can we determine what these basic
elements are?How small are they? How do these elements make various things? How can we use these elements to explain
and describe the changes of things?
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of Chemistry
Chemistry is the science to answer these questions.
The answers are not arbitrary, but have to be given in a scientific way.
Chapter 1. (L1)-Introduction
• Basic Theme of ChemistryIn this course, we will learn how
chemistry answers these questions, and explains the different things and their changes around us.
And, also, we will learn the scientific way to answer these questions.
In other words, we will learn the language of chemistry as science.
