Why Study Biochemistry, Chemistry or Forensic Chemistry at CHC?
A major in Chemistry, Biochemistry or ForensicChemistry provides a strong foundation in thesciences, which allows for a wide variety of careerchoices.ClassroomlearningatChestnutHillCollegeissupportedbypracticallabexperiences.Advancedcourses allow for individual student laboratoryprojects; these projects provide direct preparationforinternships, futurejobs, andpresentingresearchresultsatconferences.
Learning Advantages at CHC?
The Chemistry department ensures that studentsgainimportanthands-onexperienceswithchemistrytechniquesandinstrumentation.Manycollegesnolonger offer this laboratory approach because oftheincreasingcostoflaboratorysupplies.Atlargeruniversities, students often submit samples to ananalysis facility and are not permitted to use theanalytical instrumentation directly. “WhatinternshipshaveyouparticipatedinwhileatChestnutHillCollege?”
“For the past two summers I’ve interned with the NSF-REU program (National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates). I worked 40 hours a week in a biochemistry lab at Boise State University. The research in the lab I worked in focused on looking at new antibiotic targets since current antibiotics are becoming less effective at curing infections. The past two summers have been the greatest experiences of my life. Being able to work in an academic lab, meet so many new people, network at conferences, and travel across the country have been wonderful opportunities.”
