It was my privilege to represent Alpha Pi State at the 2016 DKG Society International Conven-tion, which was held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, Nashville, TN on July 5-9, 2016. It was an extremely busy week filled with business meetings, general sessions, breakout sessions, Northwest Regional breakfast, promoting the 2017 Northwest Regional Con-ference at the Market Place, and voting for the 2016-2018 DKG Society International officers at the international and regional level.
Dr. Carolyn Pittman was elected as the DKG Society International President, and the theme for her biennium is The Butterfly Effect. The analogy is that the movement of the butterfly wings can create a ripple effect like a stone being cast into the water. Her vision for the future is for the ripple effect to go far beyond our present and into the future of the society. Nita Scott, membership services administrator, encouraged DKG chapters to collabo-rate with other organization such as the Girls Scouts and 4-H groups to share projects and activities to strengthen intergenerational connections and provide the opportunity for DKG members to influence young women to become leaders of tomorrow. At the final General Session, it was announced that nearly $25,000 had been collected for the International Emergency Fund. Any member who sustains a major loss as a re-sult of a natural disaster may apply for a $500 award from the emergency fund by con-tacting the state president. By attending the International Convention and/or the Regional Conference, an individu-al learns so much about the DKG Society International and meets so many wonderful people from all over the world. Take advantage of the opportunity to become involved in the preparations for the 2017 Northwest Regional Conference in Spearfish, SD June 26 to July 2. Sincerely, Millie Horter, 2015-2017 Alpha Pi State President Preparing with Passion for the Northwest Regional Conference in 2017

2016 Alpha Pi State Convention at Joy Ranch
On June 10 & 11, forty-seven members from nine chapters met at Joy Ranch near Watertown, SD to attend the 2016 Alpha Pi State Convention. Dr. Donna-Faye Madhosingh Area Representative (Canada) from Vancouver, British Columbia Canada was the Inter-national Guest who presented a workshop entitled “Music Matters.” She, also, spoke at the Saturday evening Presi-dents’ Banquet. Several workshops were presented plus a training session for new officers. Attendees had the opportunity to tour the Mother of God Monastery and the Watertown Confectionery. Following the Friday evening meal, a wagon ride and root beer floats were enjoyed by many of the attendees. Upon request, four chapters---Beta, Gamma, Zeta, and Tau---were granted dissolution with deep regrets. New business at the business meeting included a motion by Linda Corey (Iota) to hold the next Alpha Pi State busi-ness meeting on Sunday, July 2, 2017. In 2017, there will not be a formal Ceremony of Remembrance, but the names will be spoken and reported in the state newsletter. The members who pass in 2016-2017 biennium will be included in the 2018 Ceremony of Remembrance. There will be installation of new state officers. The finance committee recommended a decrease to the Alpha Pi State President’s expense account from $1,000 to $700 and the 2016 International Convention cost from $1,000 to $700. All voted in favor. Rhonda Anderson (Mu) moved that the state treasurer will receive $300 honorarium instead of $600 and that chap-ter stipends for attending the 2017 Alpha Pi State Convention (in the budget) be suspended for 2017. Motion passed. Teresa Froelich (Iota) moved to decrease the reimbursed gas monies to actual cost of the gas instead of $ .30 per mile. Motion passed.
Elizabeth Wood (Mu) moved Chapter Dissolution Procedure Standing Rule under Chapter Obligations to Alpha Pi State pages 38-39 is approved as presented. Motion carried. Rhonda Anderson (Mu) moved that the Standing Rules relating to Historian be accepted as printed. Jan Skott (Iota) made three motions concerning Scholarships:
*moved Alpha Pi State Standing Rules on page 37 be approved as presented, not grant more than one award from Alpha Pi State to a member.
*moved Alpha Pi State Scholarship/Award Program and Alpha Pi State Scholarship/Award Program General Requirements be
accepted as Scholarship guidelines. *moved to suspend rules that there be no funds or payments to
attendance at the Northwest Regional/State convention 2017.
All motions concerning the Scholarship passed.

Results of the Evaluations
from the 2016 Alpha Pi State Convention The majority of Alpha Pi State members who filled out the evaluation forms for the state convention felt that Joy Ranch near Watertown, SD was an excellent location that provided a beautiful, peaceful oasis with the exception of the loud anniversary party that that was held in an adjoining area during the Presidents’ Banquet on Saturday even-ing. Attendees felt that the Ceremony of Remembrance and the Remembrance Display were beautiful, heart-warming, solemn yet celebratory. The setting of a country church provided a lovely backdrop for the event. The hospitality area was well-received with wonderful food, a place to sit, relax, and visit plus be able to view the silent auction items, scrapbooks, and newsletter. Members felt that the Executive Board/General Meeting was too long without a break and did not follow the time constraints of the speakers. Some suggestions were to begin the meeting earlier and the prepared motions needed to be coordinated better with the motions presented by the committees and finance budget. The workshops and tours were well-received. More time at the Mother of God Monastery would have been nice. The Alpha Pi Chorus, the door prizes, and Dr. Donna-Faye Madhosingh received very positive reviews. Other suggestions for the future state convention is to begin the Presidents’ Banquet earlier to allow individuals to return home earlier and eliminate the oral reports given by officers, committee chairpersons since the reports are printed and included in the Alpha Pi State Annual Reports Book. In conclusion, one comment that was repeated many times was the opportunity to see old friends and meeting new friends was a definite highlight of the 2016 Alpha Pi State Convention.

Preparing for 2017 NW Regional Conference by NW Regional Director Dr. Rhonda R. Anderson
The time is nearing for Alpha Pi State members to use their talents, service skills, and good old South Dakota hospitali-
ty to host the 2017 NW Regional Conference at the Spearfish Holiday Inn Convention Center on July 28 - July 1.
The Conference Steering Committee has been preplanning since March of 2016. Conference communications and ad-
vertising in preparation for the Conference has taken many forms:
In March of 2016, Millie Horter, SD State President; Elizabeth Wood, Conference Registrar and Secretary; and Dr.
Rhonda R. Anderson, then Co-Chair of Conference Steering Committee, now NW Regional Director, traveled to
Spearfish and stayed with Darlene Telkamp, Co-Chair of Conference Steering Committee. They viewed the Spear-
fish Holiday Inn Convention Center looked at the layout of the hotel, rooms for general sessions and breakout
(workshop) sessions, dining areas, restaurant, and Market Place for the vendors.
In July, the Steering Committee advertised the 2017 NW Conference at the 2016 International Convention in Nash-
ville, TN by having a display table covered with pamphlets and booklets on Spearfish and South Dakota. At the
display table DKG members from other states signed up to offer their services to work at the 2017 NW Confer-
ence.
At the 2016, NW Regional Breakfast in Nashville, State President Millie Horter invited members to come to Spearfish,
South Dakota. Following the verbal invitation, a PowerPoint created by Darlene Telkamp welcomed members to
the 2017 NW Regional Conference. NW Regional DKG members also received bookmarks, created by Alpha Pi
State that advertised the 2017 NW Conference. At the breakfast members also received over twenty South Dako-
ta-made products as door prizes.
The Steering Committee also wrote a short teaser article with a picture of Spearfish Canyon that was published in the Nov/Dec International DKG News. More articles will be printed in about the NW Regional Convention and information will be available on the DKG website. www.dkg.org From June to November the Steering Committee has also held four conference calls of 45 minutes to two hours in
length to focus on specifics of the 2017 NW Regional Conference. Several phone calls and emails have also been
used to plan the Conference.
Dr. Rhonda R. Anderson has been in communication with the 2017 NW Regional Steering Committee and relayed in-
formation received at the July and September Regional Directors meetings. Anderson will attend two more Re-
gional Directors’ meetings: One in November 2016 and the other in May of 2017.
So this is the time when all of the SD Chapters come into play. We need ALL of you to volunteer your time and talents.
If you are able to arrive in Spearfish on Monday to prepare for the NW Regional State Organization Presidents’ Train-
ing that takes place Monday evening to Wednesday afternoon (June 26-28 preconference), that would be great. Alpha
Pi State members will be needed to welcome early conference attendees or assist with tours on Tuesday, and possibly
Wednesday morning. If you are unable to arrive on Monday or Tuesday, we need SD members to arrive early Wednes-
day morning (June 28) and stay at the Holiday Inn until the end of the Regional Conference at approximately 10:00 PM
on Saturday evening (July 1). Having many members attend is not only essential but will assure a successful confer-
ence. Wouldn’t that be fantastic!
Volume 8, Issue 1 Page 9
Look for an article in this Alpha Pi State Newsletter from Steering Committee Chair Darlene Telkamp for confirming
your attendance at the 2017 NW Regional in Spearfish.
At the June 2016 South Dakota State Convention, the Steering Committee handed out a list of what various chapters
would do at the 2017 Regional Conference with the idea that some of the information could change. Darlene Telkamp
will be emailing the SD chapter presidents concerning chapter assistance as the Steering Committee receives the in-
formation that allows them to make further decisions.
Many items have not been decided such as speakers for general sessions, dignitaries, US Forum speaker, talents of
music, dance, etc. If you have a desire to offer your performing arts talent, please email Darlene Telkamp.
If you have a desire to present a forty-five minute topic at the Conference, watch the DKG website for the Proposal
Form for Breakout (workshop) Sessions.
Our South Dakota Chapters are like DKG family. “Our family is like the BRANCHES of a tree. The branches may grow in
different directions, yet our ROOTS remain as one.” Let’s showcase our Great State of South Dakota and make our
State proud by offering fun opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Greetings from Darlene Telkamp:
Greetings Sisters! As we continue toward our hosting the NW Regional Conference, I invite you to reflect with me on
our DKG memberships. In searching for inspiration, I found several old mimeograph sheets. Our heritage is a rich gift.
One posed questions for each of us. What kind of Member are you? One that makes things happen? One that
watches things happen? One that wonders what is going on? I will admit moments where I have been each.
The second, perhaps the oldest sheet was also handwritten. On this paper were words from our Founder, Dr. Annie
Webb Blanton dated May 28, 1930. “Be Loyal, and do all you can to increase our prestige. Stand together, member
for member and the whole organization for education, and for all women. Do your part in our year’s work . . .”.
Last was a report on the 1989 NW Regional Conference that SD hosted in 1989. There were 476 registered for the
conference. Our plans are for 350 to 400. Browsing the list of SD attendees brought smiles of remembrance and
thankfulness. These members believed in their abilities, dedication, and hosted a wonderful regional. It challenges
me ~ us to believe in our abilities and be dedicated to the coming tasks. TOGETHER, WE CAN DO THE SAME!
Trust that the Steering Committee is working behind the scenes and moving toward the time, when with the knowledge, tasks, and decisions will turn to chapters and members working toward specific accomplishments. To en-able that, my request is that members send an e-mail to me at [email protected] and to their chapter presi-dent indicating their attendance at NW Regional. Please indicate your arrival date/time and your departure date/time. This will enable both the Steering Committee and chapter presidents to plan. Realizing that specific times may change, I would request that you send current plans ~ perhaps only dates at this
point by the first week in December. We all know how busy our Decembers are, so please do this when you read the
article. Wishing you all the very best and knowing that Alpha Pi State is blessed with wonderful members. My life
has been enriched by your touch.

Note from Lynette Molstad Gorder, Northwest Regional Treasure: At this time our Northwest Regional account stands at $3,470.39. Thank you to the following chapters who have donated so far: Zeta, Beta, Iota, XI, Mu, and Epsilon. Thank you also to state presidents, Rhonda Anderson and Brenda Martins, for donations.

Epsilon Chapter The first meeting of Epsilon Chapter was held at NSU. What a wonderful way to start the new meeting schedule back at the Missouri River Room! It felt like old times! We heard a very informative update on Alexander Mitchell Library from our newest initiate, Cara Romeo. She did a great job letting us know what was happening at the library right now and for the future! We approved the proposed budget for the year. It was moved, seconded & voted to hold the 2015 Basket Auction proceeds of 631.00 to be used as needed for those attending the NW Regional convention in Spearfish June 28-July 1 of 2017. We are en-couraging members to consider going. A regional convention is a great experience. A report was given by Nora Grosz and me (Marie) from state convention held June 10-11 at Joy Ranch in Watertown. Rose DesCamps was presented with the Order of the Rose award. Very well deserved! Colleen Wallien was awarded the Reading Council Teacher of the Year for 2016! Members were recognized for being 40-51 year members! Name Year of Initiation Years Phyllis Cogswell 1965 51 Sharon Griffiths 1965 51 Hazel Wolter 1965 51 Madeline Carlson 1968 48 Leann Fredrickson 1973 43 Cara Romeo, Carma Ruez, and Jenny Anliker were initiated in April and Elizabeth Ketter-ling will be initiated at the October 24th meeting. With the upcoming election, our pro-gram for October will be Legislative Issues and ballot questions presented by our Brown County Auditor, Maxine Fischer.

Delta: Sue Gose was nominated for the 2016 Spirit of Dakota Award. Two new members, Cathy Goethel and Pat Schoemaker will be initiated at Delta’s November meeting.
Candice Danek transferred from Mitchell after her chapter closed last June. She was welcomed at the October meeting and received a red rose.
Lambda:
Lambda is globe-trotting this year; some of us in
reality, and some of us vicariously through mem-
ber presentations. In September, Nancy Moose
shared her trip to New South Wales and Australia.
Lynn Ryan took us on a picture tour of Scotland in
October. Later in the year we will arm -chair travel
to Ireland and Cuba. The chapter will hold a fund-
raiser to raise money for the DKG/AAUW joint
scholarship given to a deserving DSU education
major. The chapter will meet at Nicky ’s Steak-
house the first Thursday of the month again this
year and we look forward to good conversations
and interesting programs once again!

Xi Chapter Xi Chapter held its initial fall meeting of the 2016-17 year on September 26 at the home of Dorothea Merrill. Julie Amsberry was initiated into the chapter. Transfer members, Joyce Romkema and Linda Kronaizl, were welcomed as well as reinstated members, Robin Brooks and Kathy Wright. Dorothea Merrill presented a program on the history of Delta Kappa Gamma and Xi Chapter. Colleen Chase was presented the Order of the Rose by Dorothea Merrill. Members discussed community service projects and a donation to a scholarship honor-ing long time member, Margaret Lyons, who died in November 2015. Xi Chapter member, Beth Kaltsulas, was named as the 2017 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. It is the first time ever a Yankton School District teacher has been honored as the South Dakota Teacher of the Year. Beth is a math teacher at the Yankton Middle School. She has taught in the Yankton school district for 30 years…25 years at Beadle Elementary and the last five years at the Yankton Middle School. She is in the process of completing her application for the national competition. The National Teacher of the Year will be awarded spring 2017. Xi Chapter is extremely proud of Beth and her ac-complishments as a classroom teacher.

ETA Chapter Activities By Jan Petersen
One of our favorite meetings last year was a shared time of fellowship and food with Xi Chapter, Yankton. They graciously invited Eta Chapter to visit and attend the Yankton High School production and performance of the musical, Cats. We enjoyed a tasty sub sandwich supper and then accompanied them to the musical. This year, it will be our turn to invite them to Vermillion. We have something special planned, and we look for-ward to their visit. Our own Carol King received The Order of the Rose in Watertown at the State Conven-tion this past June. She was thrilled to receive the honor; our chapter was pleased for her. She has given many years of ser-vice to Delta Kappa Gamma. In October, we welcomed Staci Schoenfeld as a new initiate to Eta Chapter. Staci is a graduate assistant at The University of South Dakota, currently working on her PhD in Creative Writing and Poetry. Miss Schoenfeld’s professional accom-plishments include The National Endowment for the Arts Cre-ative Writing Fellowship in 2014, The Kentucky Foundation for Women Artist Enrichment Grant for the years 2010 and 2014, and the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Individual Artist Grant in 2014. Staci is currently a member of the Ver-milion Literary Project. Not only does Staci teach undergradu-ate courses in English, but she also takes courses in her own field to move her toward her goal. Melanie Picklesimer, one of our two Grant-in-Aid scholarship winners, visited our Octo-ber meeting to share her educational goals with chapter members. Melanie hopes to teach elementary education on a reservation. She is pursuing a Kindergarten Endorse-ment and minors in both Native Studies and Child and Adolescent Development. This is a busy young woman, anxious to make a difference in the lives of young students. She greatly appreciated the monies we could share with her. As a chapter, giving a grant-in-aid scholarship is rewarding, particularly when we see it going to a deserving and dedi-cated student. Each month, we ponder “…what are we here for?” This year of 2016-2017 will be filled with discussion about that very topic. To increase membership in DKG, we must first know indeed “…what are we here for.” As a chapter bent on sharing our belief in the value of education, we want to show the community what we are all about in ways the city will remember. Eta Chapter is off to a successful start. Christmas will find us enjoying a breakfast brunch and silent auction while February will bring discussion as we listen to our legisla-tors’ remarks as they share what is happening in Pierre. These are just a few of our up-coming programs. We wish for a successful and progressive year ahead for all the other chapters within Alpha Phi State.

Pi Chapter:
Pi Chapter was able to "Round Up" four members to attend the 2016 State Con-vention at Joy Ranch. Pictured from back: Cathy Hintz, Amy Larsen, and Lynnette Kuehl with Mary Ludeman in front. The unique setting was fun for all. It was obvious for those who attended that we all need to become part of our NW Regional Convention next sum-mer. We need to say an extra THANK YOU to Rhonda Anderson and Darlene Telkamp for taking on the organizational part of the convention. It is going to be a lot of work, but we can all work together. Please remember the word "YES" when they ask you to do something. Together we can show our great SD hospitality.
Our executive committee decided to extend the "Round Up" in our first meeting. The tables were decorated with bandanas and cowboy hats as we invit-ed our members to share in our meal of chuck wagon soup, kickin cowboy soup, haystacks, and cowboy cookies. Our guest speaker, Deb Brekke from Mobridge Regional Hospital, spoke on diabetes and women's
health. After the business meeting, we concluded with our raffles from West-ern RANCHER, Pizza RANCH, and a cow-boy basket. LeAnn Mack, Mary Camp-bell, Patti Dame, & Darlene Benfit were the lucky winters. It was, however, with saddened hearts that we said "Good Luck" to our long time member Sharon Cripe. Sharon has been in Pi Chapter since 1977. She has been very active in our chapter and at the state level too. We will truly miss her as she moves to Arizona.
