Every Brick Tells a Story Community members have dedicated almost 180 Anni-versary bricks since 2017. The brick pathway in front of the Cookhouse here at the Bow Valley Ranch is an ever-lasting reminder that that so many people care greatly about the sustainability of this park. Bricks have been dedicated as gifts to friends and family members, in celebration of an anniversary or the birth of a child, as a memorial to a loved one who passed, and for many other reasons. Sheldon Chumir Supervised Consumption Site Councillorr Evan Woolley and I took an Urgent Motion forward to address the serious safety concerns arising at the Supervised Consumption Site (SCS) at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre. This began with a police report from Chief Barlow.

The mental health and addictions crisis surrounding opi-oids and crystal meth remains one of the most significant challenges facing Calgary.

The SCS is a vital component in the four-pillar drug strat-egy of harm reduction, prevention, treatment, and enforcement in addressing this crisis. However, there has been a significant escalation of public safety concerns expressed by adjacent residents, businesses, and com-munity organization. Our Motion directs Council to work with many community partners including police and AHS to develop urgent action plans to deal with these safety issues.

Fluoridation StudyI asked Council to revisit the issue of water fluoridation by engaging with U of C’s O’Brien Institute to conduct a thorough study on the health effects of fluoride in Cal-gary’s drinking water.

I originally brought this Motion forward in 2016, but it failed 10-4. As science has progressed significantly since the 2011 decision to de-fluoridate Calgary’s water, I believe that this warrants re-visiting so Council can ap-proach this issue with the latest available research.

A recent study showed that in the time since Calgary de-fluoridated water in 2011, tooth decay in children has increased in Calgary at a faster rate than in Edmonton, indicating a correlation with the de-fluoridation.

This is not about putting fluoride in water and it’s not about keeping it out; it’s about us making the best pub-lic policy decision based on what evidence shows us.

I’m pleased the Motion passed 13-2, and that the O’Brien Institute will be conducting an objective assessment of the effects of fluoride in public water. Results will be brought forward to Council June 2019 and I will chair a full one-day meeting when the report comes back.
