After years of preparation the Calgary Zoo received the Giant Panda family in March 2018 where they will have been quarantined for just over a month and will be ready to start greeting Calgarians on May 7, 2018.

Da Mao and Er Shun’s much anticipated arrival from China at the Toronto Zoo in March 2013 was part of a global giant panda conservation breeding program which resulted in the successful birth of the first giant panda cubs born in Canada. Cubs Jia Panpan (Canadian Hope) and Jia Yueyue (Canadian Joy) were welcomed in 2015. Da Mao and Er Shun will be at the Calgary Zoo for five years ending in 2023, however the cubs will return home to China after two years in hopes that the nursery in Calgary will welcome two new cubs.

The success of the Global Giant Panda Conservation Breeding Program was proven as a model plan when the giant panda was downgraded in 2016 from “Endan-gered” to “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The primary goal of all species protections plans, and a significant focus of efforts and educational messaging by accredited and responsible zoological organizations globally. It is hoped that the Calgary Zoo will continue with the Giant Panda Cam’s that were set up in the Toronto Zoo’s Panda enclosure so that everyone could enjoy the Panda’s at play and in their daily activities.

Residents of the Bow Valley have an affinity for protect-ing the environment. Living side by side with nature, it’s easy to understand why. The Government of Alberta and I share and support the Bow Valley’s ethic of envi-ronmental stewardship, and that’s why we’ve commit-ted to phasing out coal powered electricity and having renewables make up 30% of our energy mix by 2030.

Last year, the highly competitive opening round of our renewable energy program attracted about $1 billion of private-sector investment in green power generation. Building off that momentum, the Alberta Electric Sys-tem Operator (AESO) is preparing to open the second and third series of competitions, which will add approxi-mately 700 megawatts of renewable energy, or enough to power nearly 300,000 homes.

The second round of competition will see companies partner with Indigenous communities to provide 300 megawatts of renewable power. Each bid will have a minimum Indigenous equity component, which can include an ownership stake in the project or land use agreement between the company and the community. This will help create jobs and economic benefits in In-digenous communities and across Alberta.

As Alberta’s electricity sector evolves, the Alberta gov-ernment will continue a collaborative dialogue with Indigenous leaders on how best to support long-term Indigenous participation in the electricity sector and the Renewable Electricity Program.

Alberta isn’t just a leader in oil and gas. We’re a leader in renewable energy too. We recognize the valuable work of Indigenous communities in advancing our province’s transition to renewable electricity. Our made-in-Alberta plan is getting results, as we see more investment in re-newables generate low-cost green power, create good jobs and diversify the economy.

There Is More to Spring than Daylight Savings TimeIt’s that time of year again in Alberta. Having returned to Daylight Savings Time in March, all clocks sprang ahead, and we lost one hour of sleep. The time change can serve as a reminder to check all the batteries as well as expiry date on your smoke detectors and carbon mon-oxide alarms in your home. About 25 Albertans die ev-ery year in fires, and a similar number die of accidental CO poisoning. Having working detectors is the best way for you to protect yourself and your family.

You should have at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, and it’s even safer to have additional alarms near or in each bedroom. You should have at least one CO alarm near bedrooms, and it’s even safer to have one in each room that has a fuel-burning appliance or ve-hicle (fireplace, gas stove, furnace, attached garage, etc.).

SkunksNature’s Black & White Toxic BlastListening to someone’s retelling of an encounter they recently had with a skunk got me to thinking about how much we really know about skunks, for me they are black and white and oh how they smell. The skunk is a member of the weasel family and there are four spe-cies of skunk in North America and are only dormant for about a month in the coldest part of winter.

Skunks are nocturnal scavengers that tend to be par-ticularly active in the summertime, living underneath steps or porches of a home and backyard sheds. While in their dens in the spring, mama skunks can have a lit-ter of six to eight babies but can have anywhere from two to 16 babies. Their diet consists of plants and animal matter, they also enjoy food that has been left outside for pets.

Being sprayed by a skunk is not pleasant and the smell attaches itself to everything and lingers for quite some time. If you have an annoying skunk digging up your lawn and gardens or spraying your animals, you can try to get it to move along with humane methods or con-tact a pest control specialist.
