    Interace Relays

Delcon of Finland was founded in 1975 as a specialist manufacturer ofsolid state interface relays. Their relay design utilizes pulse transformertechnology which gives some unique advantages over traditional optocoupler based solid state relays and electro mechanical relays. Thishelps ensure a long lifetime and trouble free performance in harshindustrial applications where difficult loads, noise and interference cancause big problems. Delcon is market leader in Finland and Swedenwhere their relays are widely found in power plants and large factoriesworking in the wood, pulp and paper industry. Other significantcustomers include Alstom Grid who use Delcon relays extensively intheir HVDC power network control systems.

    Problems with sigalig

Electrical disturbances can cause the LED indicator of optocoupler / electromechanical relays to glow when the relayis switched off and no input signal present. This makes itdifficult to quickly diagnose faults and rectify problems

SoltioThe Delcon LED is synchronized with the output so it isimpossible for it to glow without being on. The relays havegood hysteresis with clearly defined on / off points for reliableoperation in high noise environments.

    Problems with iterferece

Power cables installed adjacent to signal cables, especiallyover long cable runs, create a capacitive effect that cancause opto coupler/electro mechanical relays to switch on orremain on ater the control signal switches o

Transients in the power supply causes damage to relay coils/opto coupler relays

Interference from frequency inverters can provide false on/offswitching

SoltioDelcon relays have built in capacitive suppression to allowsafe, reliable operation even with very long cable runs. An RCcircuit protects the relays from transients and high frequencyintererence.

    Problems with high dc voltage

    Reduced switching capacity

Electromechanical relays are significantly derated at higherdc voltages

Usually require special version electromechanical relays thatare physically bigger and take up more space

SoltioDelcon dc output relay types CRA & CRA4 can switch up to300Vdc with no derating compared to electromechanical relayand in a smaller package. Example SLO24CRA4 switching 40mSinductive load at 3A / 110Vdc will give service life of 15 years ormore.

    Problems with idctive loads

Contactors and solenoid valves are commonly usedthroughout industry, they are also problematic inductiveloads or electromechanical relays to handle

    Contacts weld

    Short lifetime

SoltioDelcon ac output relays are rated at 3A and can switch inductiveloads without any derating. Delcon dc output relays have noderating up to 24Vdc and thereafter still offer significantly lessderating compared to electromechanical relays.

Changing relays is a costly business

Choosing Delcon relays for your system will improve your longterm profitability. The cost of system downtime differs dependingon the type of industry but is usually very expensive. If weconsider only the cost of trouble shooting and replacing a faultyrelay or the irst time then the initial cost o choosing Delcon isalready exceeded.

Delcon is the default choice in many Scandinavian paper millswhich is a well known, tough industrial environment. Thesecustomers choose Delcon for reliable, safe operation and longterm cost savings through minimal maintenance and avoidingcostly downtime.

Compared to the total system cost a relay is a relatively inexpensivecomponent. However, a relay that fails in a system runs the risk ofbecoming the most expensive component. Choosing a relay with ashorter life span than the entire system will probably result in costlyunwanted system downtime!

The life span of an industrial system is typically considered to be 15years.If your application has any of the following requirements then selectDelcon relays for a hassle free and safe operation that spans theentire system lie.

Trasiet & High Freqec SppressioThe relays have integrated protection against transients andEMI that can occur on the primary side.

Switchig Poits & HsteresisThe relays have defined activation and drop-out points.Activation occurs at 2/3 of the nominal voltage and dropout occurs at 1/2 of the nominal voltage. Current hysteresisentails that the relays impedance is changed at the activationpoint; less current is required to hold the relay in the activatedposition. The two functions above ensure a hysteresis betweenthe activation and drop-out point. Activation and drop out are

always reliably conducted, even in environments with high interference.

The diagram shows the change-over levels/hysteresis for Delconsinterface relays compared with mechanical relays and optocouplers.

Plse trasformerDelcon uses a pulse transformer for transmissionof the signal from the primary to secondary side, resulting in high energy transfer. This permits the

use of heavy duty output components of high quality. In comparison with an optocoupler, which utilises the load side forsupply to the internal electronics, the pulse transformer and Delconscircuit solution offer many benefits: Creep distance of 8 mm 4 kV isolation Very low leakage current No demand for min. load High immunity to load transients High load currents High dV/dt values

Solid State Switch & Protectio CompoetsAC otptTRIAC output semi-conductor. Thanks to thepulse transformers strong signal transmission,

TRIACs can be used that are less sensitive torapid load voltage (dV/dt) rise/fall times. Sensitive TRIACs can beactivated by rapid voltage changes. This problem is eliminated withDelcons interface relays. The SLO24TR standard relay has very lowleakage current (0.05 mA) and has varistor protection against loadtransients. Other AC relays have varistors and RC protection on thesecondary side. No minimum load is required and all modules have awide voltage range. The relays can handle resistive and inductive loadswithout load currents needing to be reduced.

for load currents up to 10A in same compact

casing. Transient protection is provided by a zener diode or varistor,

which entails that there is no leakage current. Low reduction of load

current for inductive loads compared with mechanical relays.

    Delcons unique interface relays

    Field of applicatio

Delcons interface relays are designed to withstand toughindustrial environments. Reliable activation and drop out, very highinterference immunity, 4 kV isolation and high load currents providea maintenance-free process with low service costs and reliableoperation. Lifetime is estimated at up to 20 years, depending on thetype.

Iterferece protectioDelcons interface relays have interference protection in several layersthat effectively prevent false signals from affecting the relays. Onlyactual control signals pass through the filter.

Capacitive SppressioWhen power cables with AC voltage are installed alongside asignal cable, a capacitance occurs between the cables. Thiscapacitance creates an undesired current in the signal

cable that can affect optocouplers/mechanical relays so that theyare activated or do not disconnect when the control signal ceases.Delcons relays have integrated protection that prevents capacitivecross-talk from incorrectly activating relays. Installation of powercables beside unshielded signal cables for long distances (>1.5 km) istherefore feasible.

The permitted load is linearly reduced to 1/3 from +30 C to +70 Cambient temperature (the ambient temperature must be measuredimmediately adjoining the relays). When the output modules aremounted close together, the maximum load should not be morethan 50 percent for an extended period. In other words, all modulesconstant to and including 50 % load,or half of the modules with 100

% load or all with 100 % load half the time. This provides maximumlifetime. If there is a 12.5 mm gap between the modules, theserestrictions do not apply. AC output relays with AC control circuits(SLOA120TR, SLOP120TR, SLOA230TR, SLOP230TR) are to beinstalled with the same method as for the AC input relays, in additionto what is described above. This is done to achieve optimal heatdissipation. Also note the reduction diagram below.

Applicatio tips nPn/PnPAll input relays can be connected both for NPN and PNP logic.

Ipt relas coected with log screeed sigal cablesWhen power cables are installed beside signal cables for longdistances, the CR type must be used.

Coectio of 2-wire sesors with leakage crretIf 2-wire sensors or other equipment that generates leakage currentis to be connected to the interface relays, we recommend use of the

    following relays:

    Ipt relaSLI120CRP or SLI230CRP.

    Otpt relaSLOP120TR or SLOP230TR.

Forward/reverse operatio with motorsDelcons standard relays (e.g., SLO24TR) should not be used forforward/reverse operation of single-phase or three-phase motors.Doing so entails risk or the returned voltage damaging the relays. For forward/reverse or static control of AC motors, SLO24TRA isto be used. This relay is especially designed for controlling motoroperation and has a higher maximum voltage compared to thestandard relays. For forward/reverse control of DC motors, werecommend LPS24.

24 V DC applicatios with high idctive loadsIf the load is strongly inductive, we recommend the use of transientprotection along with SLO24CR.If transient protection cannot be fitted, we recommend SLO24CRA/SLO24CRA4, which have an operating voltage of up to 300 V DC.

The relay has higher immunity to high-energy load transients. For

inductive DC loads, the maximum nominal current is reduced.
