Official Pacific Northwest District Key Club Lieutenant Governor Newsletter Division 60/62—Thuy Nguyen
Greetings,
Are y’all excited for winter break or better yet
PRECON? I know I am. However, there are several
things that need to be checked off. First of all, I
would like to notify all club officers that you have to
nominate one or two candidates for the upcoming
Lieutenant Governor Election, which is fast
approaching. In addition, monthly club reports are
going to be another duty for club officers, starting
this month. I really want to have insights regarding
your clubs’ progress on different projects so please
hold yourself accountable for this new duty.
Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Please enjoy
your break to the max!
Sincerely,
Thuy Duong Nguyen

UNWRAP YOUR HEART, UNWRAP A PRESENT
The Holiday is here! Is it raining right
now? Perhaps, the temperature is
taking a dive and you’re as clueless
as the turkey sitting on the dinner
table. This holiday, show your
appreciation in the form of kindness
and charity. Seek out opportunities
to help the more unfortunate faction
of your community. Remember, this
is the magical time of the year,
where you are granted with the
power to make wishes come true.
ACT.
CLUBS’ WEATHER REPORT
Grant Key Club’s first meeting was on Monday, December 6th 2010. I would like to
acclaim the officers for their hard works and enthusiasm throughout the tedious process
of creating a club. Keep up the good work!
Lincoln, another new addition to our division, is also led by young and driven leaders like
Judy Lee. Lincoln’s Key Club continues to grow as an organized roster and as a helping
hand to their community.
David Douglas is getting more active with numerous planned activities that their officers
have set up. The SEE’s Candies fundraiser is a promising program that this club will stick
with for the next 2 months.
Communication is the key in strengthening a division. However, as a group we’ve yet to
unlock the door to teamwork. Within the last months, I’ve tried to contact several clubs in
our division but none made an effort to reply. Please understand that every club is part of
an extended network that solely depends on its members’ responsibility for success.

Nutrition in a time of cholera: A challenge for Haitian mothers and babies
“I came to the tents when I was heavily pregnant with Sebastian,” she says. “With the information I received from Mauvette, I was able to prepare ahead of time what I would need to ensure Sebastian’s survival.”
Head nurse Mauvette, who lectured at a Port-au-Prince nursing school prior to the earthquake, has seen over 450 women through the baby-tent programme in Mais Gate since it was established in early February. She says education about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and infant care in these difficult conditions is critical – not only for mothers but for fathers and other caregivers.
“Many of the mothers who came to the tent had fed their babies some form of liquids after they were born and solid foods before they reached six months,” notes Mauvette. “With a lot of education, we were able to convert them exclusively to breastfeeding, and their children are thriving.”
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, 6 December 2010 – In the cramped and squalid conditions of the tented city in Mais Gate, a camp for Haitians displaced by the January earthquake, baby Sebastian brings a sparkle to his mother Lucienne’s eyes.
At eight months, dribbling from cutting teeth and tipping the scales at a whopping 11 kg, Sebastian is alert, sitting up, clambering over his mother and almost standing on his own. He is the Brutus in the baby tent, an example to the young mothers of a well-nourished, breastfed baby.
Lucienne gives credit for Sebastian’s good health and growth to the nurses at the tent – which is run by the non-governmental organization Concern and supported by UNICEF.
“Before the earthquake, I had no idea about how to handle a baby, how to even hold a baby, and certainly I knew nothing about breastfeeding,” she recalls. “In some
ways, it was due to thetremblement that I have this healthy boy.”
An American health charity founded by President Franklin D.
Roosevelt in 1938, March of Dimes and its supporters believe
strongly in their mission of improving the health of babies by
preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality by
providing funding for several different types of research, all
aimed at reducing the risk of inadequate health for babies.
