During the discussion, the solid waste and wastewater management were
highlighted as key environmental issue that affects maintaining water safetyof Kelani River. As the best solution for the current waste issue in
Biyagama, sustainable waste management plan was identified as a mainsolution, while introducing community and household biogas facilities and
composting were also identified as main components to the integrated wastemanagement plan for Biyagama.
Sharing the success initiatives on biogas facilities around Sri Lanka, HELP-O Chairman/Chief Executive Mr. Chathura Welivitiya , the Project Manager,
Ms. Nadeeka Amarasinghe and Mr. Daksitha Prabash the Chemical Analysisparticipated in this consultative workshop. During the session, HELPOshared the technical information about HELPOs biogas programs andidentified potential locations and areas to establish biogas plants inBiyagama Zone.
In its second phase, Pavithra Ganga project partners with UNDP and has
selected Biyagama Local Authority as the first location for theimplementation of project, while at a later stage the same will be replicated
in 13 other Local Authorities of the Kelani river basin. The Kelani Riverbeing the major drinking water source for the Western Province is highlypolluted making water unsuitable for human consumption. The maincauses for Kelani River pollution are the industrial waste (untreated wastewater, solid waste and air pollution), poor waste management (unsanitary
disposal of liquid and solid waste including electronic waste, unusedmedicine and etc.), sewage and poor sanitation practices (releasing sewage
into the river) and Riverbank erosion (due to uncontrolled sand mining andflooding).
