December Meeting Programs
Continuing with our monthly educational Sci-ence Engineering, & Technology (SET) programs,
the December lesson is environmental science. Students will learn about “The Human Com-puter” and compare it to a computer. We are born with all neurons that your brain will ever have. These cells cannot be repaired so it is critical to protect your brain.
Judging of Meeting; Old & New Business
We’ll be scoring the business procedure again. Most clubs did great in November. A few clubs had points taken off for no Old & New Business which we provide samples of in each Leader Update. (See page 5)
Christmas Cookie Contest
The Annual Christmas Cookie contest will be contin-ued, but to save time, we recommend that the judging take place prior to or following the meeting. During the meeting, the certificates, which we’ll bring with us, may be presented to the winners, and cookies may be shared at the conclusion of the meeting.

Dates to Remember
Enrollment Cards
All enrollment cards which we have been received have been entered in our enrollment program and project books have been delivered. A spe-cial thanks to our wonderful secretaries and volunteers. We want to thank Anne, Denise, Trudy, and Mary for the hours they spent in the office completing this task.
If you have not turned in enrollment cards or if you have not paid your club fees, please do so. If you are missing any project books, please, let us know as soon as possible.
Annual Candy Sale
Record Book Workshop
4-H’ers throughout Lafayette Parish can participate in the TV 10 Food for Families. A correction from last month in the day of the week, it is set for Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 11:45a.m. All clubs are asked to deliv-er their non-perishable canned food items and/or paper products to the Cajundome.
We will meet across from the Cajun Dome near Cajun Field to assemble and line up our 4-H Caravan loaded with donated items. We will then drive to the front of the Cajun Dome while "Meet Your Neighbor" is airing and make a wonderful contribution to this very worthy cause.
Food for Families Set for Wednesday
Please encourage your 4-H Members to attend the
upcoming Record Book Workshop, which will be held
4:00—5:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 7th, at Lafayette
Middle School. They should bring their project books with
them and may bring a camera if they’d like us to take
some photo’s of them working on their books so they can
include the photo’s in their record book.
This is a great way to get a jump start
on completing their 4-H Record Books
which will be due to our office for
judging on February 25, 2011. For those
in Discovering 4-H, we’ll supply most of
the materials needed to complete the
activities in the book.
Our annual candy sale is winding down. We have a few extra boxes of candy if anyone would like more to sell. Invoices went out last week.
Once all payments are in, we will announce the clubs that sold the most this year. Remember, the winning club will receive a pizza party and the next four will receive a cookie party.

Award of Excellence
Did you know…? Between 1990 and 2000, wetland loss was approximately 24 square miles per year – equivalent of about one football field lost every 38 minutes.
This year’s 4-H statewide service learn-ing project is “4-H Goes 4G”. This is a statewide campaign for environmental awareness. One of the top ten environ-mental service projects is river cleanup. Is there a stream, river, or other flowing body of water in your neighborhood? If so, is it clean or does it get clut-tered with garbage or items that could otherwise be re-cycled? Does the water source flow into a bigger body of
water? If you answered yes to most of these questions, chances are that you are near a river or stream that could use your help. Be sure to contact your local town/city government for information on issues regarding ille-gal dumping, hazardous waste, and who will be able to pick up the debris that you collect. Chances are that your city or town will welcome the extra help in beautifying your community and be willing to properly dispose of the garbage that was collected. You can find this site at: http://tools.ysa.org/downloads/tipsheets/servicebasics/Ten_Environmental_Service_Project.pdf
Fall Fest Update
A big thank you goes out to all 4-H’ers, leaders, vol-unteers and parents who helped to make Fall Fest a huge success.
Blue, Red, & White Ribbons for the Bicycle Rodeo, Poster Contest and Cookery are being delivered at the December Club Meetings. A list of the win-ners will be available online at www.lsuagcenter.com/en/our_offices/p a r i s h e s / L a f a y e t t e / F e a t u r e s / 4 - H /Contest_Results/.
Thanks go out to the Evangeline leaders, Patsy Sonnier, Crystol Hale, and Jeanne Thibodeaux for hosting us and providing the concessions.
Key Club Award & Honor Cord
Four-H Key Club Awards in Louisiana are given to outstanding high school 4-H’ers. To qualify, 4-H’ers must be 16 years of age as of January 1st of this school year, must have three (3) years of club work and have
completed one year of junior leader work. Please remind your 4-H’ers who qualify to apply.
The new “4-H Honor Cord” applications to be awarded to graduating seniors were also mailed out to seniors. Seniors must have been for three years of their high school career, participated in at least one state event and a member in good standing.
Both applications were mailed directly to the 4-H members in mid-November and are due in the 4-H Office by December 6th. Please remind your 4-H’ers that this award can only be won once in a 4-H’er’s career.
Arbor Day
Each year Arbor Day is celebrated in Louisiana on the third Friday in January. That date this year is January 14, 2011. We are encouraging clubs to do something special for Arbor Day as the January service project. Here are a few suggestions:
Trees can be planted at school or on public property. Your club could plant a tree on the school grounds and dedicate it as a memorial, a living monument to someone who has made contributions to your community or school Another idea is to help re-landscape an area of your school campus.
These are just a few ideas, but your club members usually have great ideas for service such as this.
Christmas Cookie Contest
It’s time for all 4-H’ers to start baking. All 4-H’ers are encouraged though not required to enter at least one cookie, remembering that they must make their own, bring the cookies to school the day of the meeting, and can enter more than one category. However,
each cookie can be entered in only one category. You might want to ask someone from school to serve
as a judge. Possibly ask the principal, secretary, lunch-room manager, or librarian. This is a great way to get others involved with your 4-H club. Certificates for the winners will be brought to your December Club Meeting. If you need them earlier, email Angie at [email protected]. After the contest, you might serve the cookies and punch for a Christmas social, give the cookies to the faculty or deliver some to a nearby nursing home. All would be appreciated.

Telephone Book Recycling Update
4-H Night with the Hornets
4-H Night with the New Orleans Hornets will be Saturday, February 12th. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the New Orleans Hornets Arena, New Orleans, LA against the Chicago Bulls.
If your club is interested getting group tickets ($25 each person), contact the 4-H Office. We have all of the details for the event on our parish webpage under contest rules.
One parish-wide community service project which your club may choose to participate in is the Telephone Book Recycling program. The collection drive started in November and continues through early February. The following is a description of how the drive will be held.
Clubs can start to collect books now. Phone book companies will be delivering books shortly if they have not done so already.
2. When organizing the drive at school, involve all of your 4-H’ers and as much of the student body as possible.
Line up parents and trucks to transport our books on the delivery dates.
Deliver to The Recycling Foundation at 500 Guidry St. off of Pinhook Road near the Evangeline Thruway, between the hours of 7:30AM and 4:30PM from Monday through Thursday and 7:30 till noon on Friday.
4-H’ers can also place old phone books in the curbside bins that are available for recycling. However, remind them to put no more than five (5) at a time. Any more than that will cause problems.
Clubs are asked to keep an accurate count of the number of books collected. A final count will be due in February.
The leaders at leader training leaders recommended we conduct this as a service project regardless of awards.
We are looking into a sponsor to award the clubs that collect the most books.
If your have questions, you can contact the Recycling Foundation at 234-0066.
Fast Research Facts - Character Education Support
Service-Learning
Research conducted by RMC Research Corporation (2005) found that students who participated in the Partnerships in Character Education project (character education project integrating
service-learning components) in Philadelphia reported gains on the civic engagement measure from fall 2004 to spring 2005. Participating students also reported greater increases in prosocial behaviors, such as altruism, caring, respect, and ability to choose between right and wrong, than their peers in the comparison group.
Scott and Jackson (2005) found that using service-learning concepts as part of comprehensive guidance endorsed the middle school philosophy in multiple ways and helped middle school students meet comprehensive guidance program goals related to academic/learning development, life/career development, personal/social development, and multicultural/global citizenship. Five major themes pertinent to middle school student development included personal awareness, social skills, learning skills, career interests, and character education. Middle school students, who received comprehensive guidance curriculum instruction in their service-learning class and then taught a similar curriculum to elementary school students, reported learning character education skills and how to be better citizens in addition to being academically successful.
