porary Christmas songs will high-

light the program at the December

2 meeting of the Braddock Street

United Methodist Women. A la-

dies trio composed of Becky Miller,

Renee Settles, and Aimee Walton

will share their musical talent, heritage, and love of God through their mu-

sic.

The dinner meeting will begin at 6:00 PM and will include a candle burning

in memory of those members who passed away in 2014. Also, officers for

2015 will be installed by District President Linda Borror, and special recog-

nition pins will be presented.

Prayer partners from Pleasant Valley/Cedar Grove United Methodist Wom-

en, spouses, and other friends have been invited to join in this celebration.

A free will offering will be collected for the World Thank Offering which “is an opportunity for individuals to respond to God’s abundance and grace with spontaneous gifts of gratitude. The funds collected are used in the total program of mission carried on through United Methodist Women’s national office in the United States and around the world.” (from United Methodist Women website)

Music Notes

Advent and Christmas Musical Celebrations

Many musical offerings will occur at BSUMC this holiday season – both by Community

Organizations and Ensembles within the church. All programs are designed to make

this season a time of hope and happiness to all. As we listen to the story, told in so

many different ways, we can open our hearts to so many new ways of showing God’s

love to others. Music can move each of us to do more than we ever imagined – thus

the power of the Holy Spirit. Take this opportunity to get into the spirit of the holiday season; allow that

power to show you angelic possibilities. You too can become an angel who shares the story with others –

some may be as shepherds and some may be as wisemen.

Please refer to the front page of this publication to get all the details for Concert and Worship offerings.

All musical ensembles will be on Christmas break Dec. 25 – Jan. 3 – no rehearsals.

All Sunday evening rehearsals will resume January 11.

BRADDOCK STREET NEWS AND UPDATES

MUSIC BY JUDY CONNELLY

Giving to Jesus this Christmas

In order to help us to remember that it’s Jesus’ birthday, not ours, we offer these

opportunities to give to Jesus this Christmas. We challenge our congregation to

give as much to Jesus by giving to others, as we give to our own families this

holiday season.

Christmas Eve Offering – These gifts will benefit the Child Rescue Centre

and Mercy Hospital in Bo, Sierra Leone, as well as help pay off the student

loans (currently about $7,500) of Joseph Akol from South Sudan.

In lieu of Poinsettias, giving to those in need– These gifts will support our

local homeless ministry: Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter.

Giving Tree (in lieu of Angel Tree)- These gifts will now focus on needs in

our community and will be giving to children (and siblings) from our own Jonah’s Clubhouse, our

Backpack Ministry, and Operation Remember (a ministry to nursing home and home-bound sen-

iors).

Alternative Gift Cards will also benefit our Jonah ’s Clubhouse and Backpack Ministry children

and Operation Remember Seniors.

Oglesby Class Food Baskets will benefit our Jonah ’s Clubhouse and Backpack Ministry chil-

dren.

BACKPACK MINISTRY

The children and siblings of the Backpack Ministry, among others, are being blessed

with the Giving Tree of Braddock Street UMC! Approximately 95 children will re-

ceive at least two nice gifts this year; otherwise, many would have had none or very

little. Involve your kids to help shop for those less fortunate and make a difference

in your community.

In addition, each Redbud backpack family will receive a Christmas food basket from the Oglesby

Sunday School Class! Backpack food continues to be delivered regularly, thanks to the ongoing do-

nations from our congregation. Fully Rely On God so that our hands and feet will reach out to help

feed the hungry and bless those who have no voice. Please contact Anne Brewster for more infor-

mation.

MINISTRIES

Would you like to be part of making the Winchester

area a thriving literacy community for every child?

BSUMC has formed a faith based partnership with Alli-

ance working with elementary age children through a

school program Book Buddies. The only requirement is

for caring, committed adults who enjoy reading time with

children. We have both morning and after school pro-

grams.

We currently have a need for 2 volunteers at the Indian

Hollow Elementary School, 1548 North Hayfield Road,

Winchester. The first position is for one morning a week, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of your

choosing, between 9 -11 AM The second position is for one morning a week, any day available to you,

from 10-11 AM.

In late January, the Quarles Elementary School in Winchester will start its new year of Book Buddies.

This program is an after school program on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30 PM.

If you want to be a part of this exciting program, either as a regular volunteer or a substitute, please con-tact Karen Walker at [email protected] or 703-405-7390.

Cold weather is upon us! Please take a minute during this busy holiday season and sign up to volunteer some of your time to the Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter (WATTS). Sunday, 12/28/2014: BSUMC is covering this day during Christmas week at the Round Hill Ruritan Club. We will be providing breakfast in the morning and then snacks, dinner and other duties that evening. January 12-19, 2015: BSUMC is hosting this week in our Fellowship Hall. We need many volunteers to make this happen! If you have volunteered before, thank you and we look forward to seeing you again. If you’re considering volunteering, please say yes! In addition to being an incredible way to serve those in our community that need us desperately, it is also a great way to meet other BSUMC folks! Training for all volunteers will be held on Sunday, January 11, at 12:15 PM in Room 214. A light lunch will be provided. To volunteer, go to braddockstreetumc.org, click on Events and look for the link to the WATTS SignUpGenius volunteer page. If you have any questions, please contact Barbara White at 540-678-0271 or [email protected]. If you would like to support WATTS financially, please make a check out to BSUMC and write “WATTS” in the memo line.

MISSIONS & OUTREACH

As we enter this Christmas season of giving, we are excited to give back to our local

community through the Christmas Giving Tree. This year we will be buying gifts for

the children and siblings from our Backpack Ministry as well as the children and sib-

lings from our Jonah’s Clubhouse.

We will also be purchasing gifts for over 200 senior citizens who live in local nursing

homes or are homebound. We look forward to nurturing and expanding these local

mission efforts throughout the year. We encourage all members of the congregation

to participate in this ministry. You can take a tag from the tree to purchase gifts, or if

you prefer, you may purchase a beautiful handmade Christmas card and use this card to make a

cash donation in someone’s honor for the Christmas season. Donations will be used to support these

local ministries throughout the coming year.

The Giving Tree will remain in the Greetorium through December 14, or as long as tags remain on

the tree. We ask that all gifts be returned by December 17.

FIRST NIGHT

Stephen Ministry is so much more than one might imagine. Take a journey through the website at www.stephenministries.org and watch the videos, read the testimonies and the origin of the ministry to have an in-depth look and better understanding of the min-istry.

This is a ministry of distinctively Christian caregiving and a ministry of confidentiality. If you feel you would benefit from being partnered with a Stephen Minister, you may con-tact Rev. Adam Sowder at his direct office phone number.

If you have an interest in learning more and possibly becoming a Stephen Minister, contact Donna Gutierrez at [email protected].

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Come and celebrate the New Year by giving one or two hours on December 31 to

greeting guests who will be attending the events featured at our Church. It will be an

evening of great fun and celebration for the entire family with excellent entertainment

in an alcohol-free environment throughout downtown Winchester.

By volunteering to help at Braddock Street you will be meeting and greeting folks

from Winchester and beyond while seeing and hearing wholesome entertain-

ment. All volunteers will receive a free First Night Winchester pin which will get them

admission to all the entertainment venues.

Please call Kitty Redford at 540-662-6142 for more information and to volunteer.

Congratulations to Tyler Beaver who became Troop 3’s 100th Eagle Scout! Way to go, Tyler! Tyler’s Ea-gle project was located at the Third Battle of Winchester where he closed an unauthorized bike trail for the Battlefield Association.

Over the first two weekends in November, Cub Scout Pack 3 and Troop 3 participated in the national Scouting For Food event by distributing flyers and delivering food to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The troop had a great time camping at Kernstown Battlefield and participating in the Battle of Cedar Creek reenactment. Major events for the troop in December include serving lunch for guests at the Jubilee Kitchen and travelling to Timberline Ski Resort for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding.

Cub Scout Pack 3 is for boys who are in grades 1-5 and Boy Scout Troop 3 is for boys 11-17 years of age. The BSA is a values-based organization and their mission is to prepare young people to make ethi-cal and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. If you would like to become involved with the troop, or get additional information on Troop 3, please contact Greg Eisenhauer at 665-0096 or [email protected].

Thank you Braddock Street for chartering Troop 3 continuously since 1928!

On behalf of Winchester Family Health Center and SVMS Special Populations, we would like to ex-

tend a heartfelt THANK YOU, for contributing to our community service project. Through your acts of

kindness and generosity, we have reached our goal of 500 hygiene kits. The hygiene kits have been

distributed to the many workers and their families of Frederick County Fruit Growers/Fairmont Camp.

The supplies came in abundance, which allowed us to donate a small portion to the local homeless

shelter in Winchester. It is our great desire to promote personal hygiene for healthier lifestyles, and

because of you, we have ALL made a difference. Again, thank you for your support with making this

project possible.

WINCHESTER FAMILY HEALTH

Thank you for your assistance during this difficult time [loss of B.J. Williams]. Your kindness and love brought us comfort.—The Williams Family

My name is Stacey Park and I am the Director of Weekday Ministries, which includes the early learn-

ing center and preschool. As the holiday season approaches, I reflect on how thankful I am for those

individuals who have made significant contributions to the success of our programs. First, I would

like to recognize our staff of approximately 30 caring and qualified professionals who are committed

to ensuring that the children in our programs receive the highest quality of care.

Second, I would like to acknowledge our programs’ parents for their unwavering support and for giv-

ing us the opportunity to share in the lives of their children. Finally, I would like to express my grati-

tude for the efforts of our Building Superintendent, Russ Hagerdon, for conscientiously adhering to

our buildings’ health and safety protocols as well as working diligently to meet our programs’ mainte-

nance needs. Thank you to everyone who contributes to our programs and I pray that everyone en-

joys a blessed holiday season.
