    Introducing the

    LAMB LOTTERY

This is the perfect opportunity for 4-H’ers to learn about lambs, gain experience,

take on responsibility and showcase their hard work at fair.

  • Livestock Identification Process

Paper Livestock ID Affidavits are still required by our county office. Please stop by the Extension Office to

pick up Affidavit papers for your livestock.

We will be using one size visible EID tags for all market beef, market swine, market lamb, meat goat, feeder

calves, showing at the State Fair or AKSARBEN. Families will be required to submit a Breeding Nomi-

nation Card for all breeding animals showing at State Fair.

For breeding goats and breeding sheep the scrapie tag identification number will serve as the official identifi-

cation. For breeding beef a tattoo will serve as the official identification for State Fair and AKSARBEN.

Bangs tattoos are NOT an accepted form of identification. Registration papers are required. DNA and breed-

ing card verification will be required for all livestock animals showing at State Fair or AKSARBEN. County

only animals will use county only 4-H tags. There will be no mandatory weigh-in days or group taggings.

The cost of DNA is $6 per entry. There will be a total limit of nominations by individuals including both 4-H

and FFA entries to help level the playing field for those youth who are in both organizations.

Entry Limits; Beef (10) Lambs (20) Swine (40) Goats (20). Youth will have until August 10 (State Fair pre-

entry deadline) to select whether they are showing their animal in 4-H or FFA. This could mean they show

one organization at the county level and one organization at State Fair. They cannot switch between State

Fair and AKSARBEN. Families will be able to select which animal entries they have chosen to show at State

Fair in a dropdown menu in the ShoWorks program which you will use to pre-enter your livestock at a later

    date.

All nominated animals will be automatically listed as a choice option when pre-entering via ShoWorks.

  • 1. Make sure you have appliance thermometers in your refrigerator and freezer. * Check to ensure that the freezer temperature is at or below 0° F and the refrigerator I at or below 40° F. In case of a power outage, the appliance thermometers will indicate the temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer to help you determine if the food is safe.

    2. Freeze containers of water. 3. Freeze refrigerated items such as leftovers, milk and

fresh meat and poultry that you may not need im-mediately.

    4. Group food together in the freezer. This helps the food stay cold longer.

    5. Have coolers on hand. 6. Purchase or make ice cubes in advance and freeze gel

packs ahead of time. 7. Find local sources to buy Dry and/or Block Ice. 8. Store food on shelve that will be safely out of contami-

nated water in case of flooding. 9. Have a supply of bottle water stored where it will be as

safe as possible from flooding 10. Do not drink your bottled water if it has an odor.

    FACT

Emergencies can happen, especially with extreme weather conditions. When they do, the best strategy is to already have a plan in place. This includes knowing the proper food safety precautions to take before, during and after a power outage – and being prepared to safely han-dle food and water in the event of flooding occurs.

From the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

    1. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. * The refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if unopened. * A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if half full) if door is closed. 2. Buy Dry or Block Ice to keep refrigerator as cold as

possible if power is going to be out for prolonged period of time. 50lbs of dry ice should keep 18 cu-bic foot fully stocked freezer for 2 days.

    1. Check appliance thermometer temperature. If freezer thermometer reads 40 of below, the

food is safe and may be refrozen. 2. Refrigerated food should be safe as long as the power was not out for more than 4 hours and door was kept shut.

A gentleman had been traveling during a time when the electricity was off for several days in many homes in his community. However, when he returned home, his electricity was working and everything in his freezer was frozen solid. He proceeded to eat some food from the freezer and got sick. What happened? In this case, his electricity actually had been off for about a week, and then came back on. Everything in his freezer had thawed and been at unsafe temperatures for several days. As the food froze again when the electricity returned, he was unaware there were any food safety problems. A simple way to help detect this problem is store an ice cube or two in a sealed plastic bag or small container in the freezer; a sealed bag/container is important so the ice cube doesn't evaporate and disappear. If the ice cube has melted down from its original shape, you'll know the power was off for an extended period of time.

How to Tell if Your Freezer Power Was Off When You Were Away

** Perishable food such as meat, poultry, seafood, milk and eggs not kept ade-quately refrigerated or frozen may cause illness if consumed,

even when they are thoroughly cooked.
