President’s Message Entering now the 9th month of the Covid pandemic, LAHS, along with many organizations have been presented with many changes and some difficult changes. LAHS continues to plan for 2021 with an emphasis on school education, improved digital communication and budget planning. A Zoom meeting for AGM received no support, so the BOD will send out AGM information in digital/paper format. Thank you to our LAHS members, and deep wishes for your health and safety from BOD members Jane, Trudy, Barb. LAHS is a member of the Ontario Historical Society and the following directive illustrates some of the deep concerns for Ontario heritage communities. The Ontario Historical Society Executive Director, Rob Laverty, did a presentation to the Members of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in June 2020. The following is a summary of his presentation as presented in the OHS Bulletin, August 2020. The Ontario Historical Society first recommendation “is that the Government of Ontario immediately establish a new Ontario Community Heritage Infrastructure Grant programme. This grant would also provide funding for a digital infrastructure for organization to build or improve robust websites and online programming.” The second recommendation “is that the Ontario Government immediately exempts heritage organizations from property taxes. Exempting historical not-for-profit organizations from property taxes will ensure that precious dollars raised by volunteers go directly to maintenance, operating and urgent capital expenditures. In 2019, the Government of Ontario exempted all Royal Canadian Legion Branches from property taxes. Historical organizations in Lennox and Addington include Old Hay Bay Church, St. Alban’s Church, Adolphustown Town Hall, Allison House, United Empire Loyalist Park, L&A Archives and Museum, Allan Macpherson House and the Cloyne museum. LAHS Summer & Fall Activities Articles for the new LAHS Website continued during the Covid-19 pandemic and will keep the new website on lahistoricalsociety.ca and lennoxandaddingtonhistoricalsociety.ca (is still available). To be added will be the: Lennox and Addington News from the Past Newspapers - Napanee Bee 1851, 1852. This article is included with the newsletter as some LAHS members might not have internet connection. Who remembers The Napanee Canning Co. 1905 -1925? The full article will be in the next newsletter. Article published in the Cloyne Pioneer Times, November issue about The Flying Doctors in Northbrook. Dr. James Berry of Kingston was interviewed by LAHS about his experiences in participating in the Northbrook clinic. http://pioneer.mazinaw.on.ca/news.php. LAHS member Ken Brown research files were donated to the Society as per his last wishes. His research was based primarily in Hasting County. LAHS contacted Archivist Amanda Hill, of the Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County. The three large boxes were transferred to her care. They are now accessible under the reference 2020-061 and will be in the online catalogue in the future. https://www.cabhc.ca/. Also LAHS index cards of the Deseronto Tribune were donated to the Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County.
