Maturing Indian Auto Component Aftermarket expects Consolidation of the Distribution Channels

ACMA, in January 2012, announced the finding of its study on ‘Emerging Trends in Distribution, Servicing and Future Regulations’ in the Indian Auto Component Aftermarket. The study on the Indian automotive aftermarket was undertaken by ACMA through a leading market research agency - The Nielsen Company, the auto component aftermarket in India is valued at Rs. 24,800 crores and another Rs 8,000 crores for services. The Indian Automotive Aftermarket study Book II - Emerging Trends in Distribution, Servicing and Future Regulations, is in continuation of the association’s efforts in understanding the dynamics of the Auto Component Aftermarket in India and yet another initiative to help increase public awareness on the danger to life and property due to usage of spurious auto components.

The study, Indian Automotive Aftermarket - Emerging Trends in Distribution, Servicing and Future Regulations, is a sequel to the earlier edition released in February 2011, ‘Automotive Aftermarket - The Future Ahead 2011’, which was an extensive research to estimate the Automotive Aftermarket business potential in India and its likely size by 2020.

Further, extensive secondary research and structured consultations have been carried out with each stakeholder including OEMs, auto component manufacturers, aftermarket distribution channel, relevant ministries & government bodies and associated institutions to validate the market realities of the primary survey. Comparisons of the Indian aftermarket have been drawn with similar markets like BRIC countries and references drawn from the mature markets of Europe & USA.

The current edition of the study focuses on Auto Components distribution structure and the likely changes in roles of channel partners as the market begins to mature. It also brings to light the dynamics of the vehicle servicing market along with opportunities & threats, enumerating the impact of future regulations - emission, safety, noise etc. on the Automotive Aftermarket. The study with updated vehicle parc data from over 150 RTOs, covering 100 cities, is expected to help the industry in servicing better the smaller towns and cities in the country.

The aggregate aftermarket around the globe is expected to cross USD 1 trillion by 2012, growing at over 5 per cent. The current size of the components business in the Indian automotive aftermarket is estimated at Rs 24,800 crores. Two wheelers segment with 49.7 per cent leads the

market followed by passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three wheelers at 24.7 per cent, 23.1 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively. Only 41 per cent of the components consumed in the Indian aftermarket belong to OEMs and OESs with other manufacturers and imported parts contributing to 23 per cent share. It is estimated that almost 36 per cent of the components in the aftermarket are counterfeit or fake.

The study, through the primary survey, reveals that the top 100 towns and cities in the country, by population, account for 56.2 percent of the total two wheelers Parc; 45 percent of the total Three wheelers Parc; 66 percent of the total passenger vehicles Parc and 54 percent of the total commercial vehicles Parc. With fast growing vehicle penetration in the top 100 cities, and with a rapidly evolving aftermarket, it is expected that by 2017 the market share of the OEM-authorized network of service stations will grow to around 20-30 percent from existing 15-25 per cent; that of Multibrand organized service chains to 5-10 percent from 1-2 percent. Semi-organized service centres accounting for 10-20 percent of the market today, will account for 20-30 per cent in 2017 while the share of unorganized garages will drop from the current 60-70 per cent to 45-55 percent.

The challenges in evolution of the Auto Component Aftermarket in India into a world-class sector and the way forward only a small portion of vehicles in India are serviced by OEM-authorized service centres; the rest by organized, semi-organized and a large number of small unorganized players. To ensure better quality of service for the customer, a process of accreditation needs to be devised and basic minimum standards for aftermarket players in each product / component category need to be defined. Further, communicating to end-users the benefits of high-quality components is necessary to create a pull for branded and quality assured products & components.

There is a grave need for modern logistics management in the aftermarket value chain, the geographical spread and the sheer diversity of components along with specialized requirements for slow-moving parts and sub-assemblies pose as the greatest challenges in devising efficient logistics. Distributors, retailers, stocking garages, etc. will need training and education on scientific inventory management, deployment of IT systems and professional management. This will, in turn, necessitate hiring a range of IT-capable manpower – salespersons, sales managers, warehouse personnel, mechanics, service supervisors, service managers, service advisors and IT-support staff.

ASLI Fight against NAQLI“An Awareness Campaign Against Counterfeits”

ACMA, has been spearheading various special initiatives to help increase public awareness on the menace of counterfeit parts and the danger to life and property due to usage of these spurious auto components. It is not only damaging to business and investment opportunities but is also having a negative impact on society and the global economy.

The Asli Naqli pavilion at the recently held Auto Expo 2012 was inaugurated by Mr Ambuj Sharma, Jt Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises. The show for the first time had a key highlight, an IPR Cell, to safeguard the Intellectual Property Rights of exhibiting companies against display of their counterfeits or imitations. An aggrieved party could approach the IPR cell and seek advisory for action against an infringing exhibitor company at the event. In the recent past over 500 raids have already been conducted through the common raids program under the aegis of ACMA and ACMA is further garnering support from its membership to strengthen this unique initiative.

36 percent share of parts sold in the replacement market is counterfeit products, raising concern and emphasizing the need for safety for prevention of road accidents. Around 20 per cent of all road accidents in India are directly or indirectly attributed to the use of counterfeit automotive parts (as per ACMA – E&Y Study). The Asli-Naqli show had sixteen leading component manufacturers participating to create awareness against counterfeiting and displayed the difference between genuine and fake products to promote the cause of industry in its fight against counterfeits.

At the venue, company representatives educated visitors on the dangers of using counterfeits and informed them on how more and more fake components have been finding their way into the replacement market—where retailers sell auto parts to replace factory-fitted ones.

Asli Naqli, over the years has become an iconic show and has successfully attracted attention of every stakeholder in its drive against counterfeits.

Seminar on Brand Protection through IPR Management

Coinciding with Auto Expo, ACMA Consumer Affairs Committee also organised a one day seminar on ‘Brand Protection through IPR Management’.

The focus of the seminar was to explore ways and means to prevent infringement, understand various dimensions of IPRs and to share some practical hurdles prevailing in the system.

Sharing his views with participants, Chairman Consumer Affairs Committee, ACMA, Mr Soumitra Bhattacharya said, “In today’s competitive environment, while it is essential to have a strong brand, it is even more important to invest in brand protection for long term sustenance. Litigations on IPRs, he felt, need not be seen as “luxury litigations”, and unless there are strong deterrents, counterfeiters will continue on such unscrupulous activities.”

One Day Training Programme on SMED

December 21st, 2011, Noida

Recognising the impact of Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) on productivity in a manufacturing set-up led ACMA to organise a one-day program on 21st December, 2011 in Noida for its members in the Northern region. The target audience for the program were people involved at the shop floor activities such as Production, Quality, Production Engineering, Improvement activities and was attended by 20 participants.

Mr. Manoj Mathur, Consultant, S.K. Associates, faculty of the training program, explained SMED as one of the many lean production methods for reducing waste. The approach of SMED / Quick Changeover is applicable not only to manufacturing processes but also to other non-manufacturing processes like, Store – Inventory Processes, Logistics etc.

It provides a rapid and efficient way of changeover in a manufacturing process, from the current product to the next product. This rapid changeover is vital to reducing production lot sizes and thereby improving the flow and increase productive run time to achieve enhanced throughput and reduce total costs explained Mr. Mathur.

Referring to SMED as an approach towards continuous improvement and to QCO (Quick Change Over) reducing the change over time to one digit, also known as set-up time reduction. Set-up Reduction was further

explained as a process through which the total time required to changeover or set-up the equipment or a work centre is drastically reduced through a systematic, problem-solving, waste-eliminating approach to support the movement towards small lot size runs. He explained that the goal should always be to completely minimise any set-up or changeover time, through product redesign, machine and tooling modifications as the preparation step and trial runs & adjustments utilise most of the time during the set-up process. Standardization of product design and tooling is the key to identify ways of simplifying and eliminating variations that do not add value to products.

Workshop on Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerance January 18th & 19th, 2012, New Delhi

ACMA (Northern Region) organized a two-day workshop on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) on 18th & 19th January, 2012 in New Delhi. GD&T is a collection of symbols used by design engineers to communicate geometric requirements for components and assemblies.

GD&T is based on engineering and manufacturing principles ensuring reduction in cost, interchangeability, and integrity of design requirements that have been used widely in the manufacturing industry as a mechanical drawing standard.

The faculty, Mr. Sanjay Sharma, DGM, Rico Auto Industries Ltd. explained that GD&T is a common technical drawing language that enables design engineers to communicate pictorially to improve product designs and reduced cost. GD&T is also used by Tool manufacturer, Gauge manufacturer, Process engineers to accurately describe the size, form, orientation, and location of part features. It encourages designers to define a part based on how it functions in the final product or assembly.

The benefits of GD&T are that correct application and interpretation of GD&T will lead to creating clear and concise drawings that reduce assumption throughout the manufacturing process, improve product

design, and effectively communicate design requirements to suppliers and manufacturers.
