Its that time o year again. FWPs annual hunterharvest telephone survey is underway. Montana Fish,Wildlie and Parks is calling a sample o 160,000hunters to gather harvest inormation on this yearshunt. Te survey asks randomly selected hunters aseries o short questions about their hunting effort andharvest success or big game, turkeys, upland gamebirds, and wolves. Wildlie managers say the research

is vital to understanding the results o the 2013 seasonand or setting next seasons hunting regulations. Te survey is also a useul tool to get some othercrucial inormation, said Justin Gude, FWPs researchbureau chie or the Wildlie Division. For example,we record reports o where and when people have seenwolves to aid in the monitoring o wol populations. Te hunter harvest surveys will continue throughMarch.

    And, the survey says?

Te recent brouhaha over Phil Robertson and hisinterview with GQ has had my eyes rolling back in my headto the point where I can see my ears rom the inside. Beore we get too ar with Phil, let me give you my takeon Reality V. It aint too real. I started out with American Hot Rod,American Chopper, and Deadliest Catch. It didnt take melong to see the similarities. Always some drama, ALWAYSsome conflict, most o the time an unreasonable deadline, and somebody in the show you could really dislike. I lookedin on others over the years, the basic concept was always the

same only the players were different.I came to the conclusion that all these shows wereorchestrated by the producers, and probably edited to themax just to get the desired results. In all my years Ive neverknown anyone, or any group o people, who went throughso much turmoil on such a regular basis. So you can surmisethat I didnt really see any o this stuff as real. Now back to Phil. Phil Robertson has been portrayed inthe media as a backwoods redneck with the IQ o an ice cube. Phil Robertson graduated rom Louisiana ech witha Bachelors in Physical Education, and got his Masters inEducation. He was the starting Quarterback on the ootballteam; erry Bradshaw was his second string back-up. It hasbeen said he could have had an NFL career. But it was apersonal choice to not pursue it, because ootball season gotin the way o hunting.........I know people like this.

He had the successul duck call business way beore Vcame calling. Phil, in his interview, was doing little more than whatim ebow did in the NFL. Expressing his belies in the Bible, and how he understood what the Bible told him. Recently a guy was hired as a White House Counselor, hehad previously called the GOP a group similar to Jonestown.Tat is now to be overlooked because a ew days afer he madethe statement he issued an apology. Phil has issued a statement/apology, but is being rakedover the coals by the media. Once again we have a doublestandard, one o their guys do wrong, theyll overlook it,somebody they dont like does wrong.......it aint gonna goaway. I youve a mind to, google Phil Robertson, and beoreyou read all the stories and theres a bunch look or the

Wikipedia listing and find out just who Phil is. A guy that likes camo, likes having a beard, likes tohunt and fish, likes to spend time with his amily, believes inGod..........Sound like anybody you know? ~ Hugh Morris

(Editors note:I youve not a mind to google Phil Robertsonand have no idea who he is, he happens to be the patriarch oA&Es popular V program, Duck Dynasty.)

    Hes been doing some thinkin...

At 9:43 a.m. today, the eastbound EmpireBuilder (Amtrak) was atthe geographical center oNorth America. Tat wouldbe in (or ne ar) Rugby, NorthDakota. Got an e-mail romthe sisters cell phone.

It also means thatthe train was runningthree hours late at thattime, although she wasntcomplaining. Not bad or December, she wrote. Rugby is not quite inthe middle o North Dakota, rather in northeast NorthDakota i you quartered thenearly square state. In 1931,the town o Rugby (oundedin 1886) erected a 15-eet-tall rock obelisk markingthe Geographical Center oNorth America.

But the correct spotarguably is in a orlornslough, smack dab in themiddle o nowhere. It began more than 80years ago when a respectedederal mathematician stucka pin in a cardboard map othe continent and recordedthe coordinates o where itbalanced on his finger.

Close only counts withhorseshoes, hand grenadesand the geographical centero something, said DavidDoyle, chie geodeticsurveyor with the NationalGeodetic Survey in SilverSpring, Md. Doyle said even withadvanced technology thereis no method to get a preciselocation since the continentis always changing. Tereis no generally accepteddefinition o a geographiccenter and no reliable way odetermining it, he said.

Edward M. Douglas1928 stickpin balancingcalculation is probablyas good a method as any,Doyle said. Most people in Rugbythink it is the real center;those who know otherwisebelieve such conversationsare or nit-pickers. For the nit-pickers,Douglas pinpointed thegeographic center o NorthAmerica to be in NorthDakotas Pierce County, about 16 miles southwest

o Rugby, 5.2 miles north oOrrin, and 6 miles west oBalta. It lies ne ar equidistant about 1,300 miles romSan Francisco, New York,New Orleans and the oldDistant Early Warning linethough Canada.
