VISION 2020

This past weekend, we officially kicked off our Vision 2020 campaign for 2018 and what a kickoff it was! To date, we have received over $36,500 in commitments. Our current debt to the Archdiocese is $89,000, and with these commitments over the past three weeks, we have reached 40% of our goal to be debt-free! Over the last four years, your annual commitments to the campaigns have averaged $129,000. Your generous contributions towards the campaigns have set the bar high, but our parish always loves a challenge. We need your help to end our long journey of indebtedness. Please take a minute to prayerfully consider making your commitment today. How exciting it will be for our parish to be debt-free. To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, OH! THE PLACES WE’LL GO! We’ll be on our way up! We’ll be seeing great sights! We’ll join the high fliers Who soar to high heights. If you still would like to fulfill your commitment For 2017, it’s not too late! Simply drop your check in the collection basket in an envelope marked “Vision 2020 for 2017” or mail it to the rectory. Thank you to all and God Bless!

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: The facts, figures, statistics, and information given below are gleaned from THE NATIONAL STUDY OF CATHOLIC PARISHES AND HISPANIC MINISTRY, sponsored by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops: What used to be a phenomenon restricted to places like Los Angeles, San Diego, Brownsville, Houston, or Miami is becoming the new norm in cities and towns of the Northern, Midwestern, and Eastern cities of the U.S. (including our own local communities of Coatesville, Parkesburg, and Lancaster). Few Catholic parishes that survive in this generation will do so without a significant Hispanic membership. This is because Hispanics are at the heart of the Church’s growth in the U.S. In 1965, there were 48.5 million Catholics in the country. Fifty years later the number had risen to 75 million. Despite millions of baptized women and men who stopped self-identifying as Catholic, the number of Catholics in the United States is growing. Hispanic people account for 71 % of the growth of the Catholic population in the U.S. since 1960. It is important to realize that long before 1776, the first Catholics in what is now the United States were Hispanic. As the nation expanded its borders to the South and West in 1848, and annexed Puerto Rico in 1898, Hispanics further increased the Catholic population. Therefore, it should not come as a surprise to learn that 65.5% of Hispanic people are U.S.-born. About half of U.S.-born Hispanics self-identify as Catholic. From their experience of being both Hispanic and American,, our Hispanic Sisters and Brothers enrich the American Catholic Church by drawing from many cultural wells. We had a taste of that richness in our recent celebration on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. (Future articles will provide greater insights into the benefits that Hispanic Catholics are bringing to our Church and our Parish)

10 Christmas Commandments "The following item appeared in a church newsletter and contains some good advice that will help us keep selfishness in check this Christmas: 1. You shall not leave ‘Christ’ out of Christmas, making it ‘Xmas.’ To some, ‘X’ is unknown. 2. You shall prepare your soul for Christmas. Spend

not so much on gifts that your soul is forgotten. 3. You shall not let Santa Claus replace Christ, thus

robbing the day of its spiritual reality. 4. You shall not burden the shop girl, the mailman,

and the merchant with complaints and demands. 5. You shall give yourself with your gift. This will

increase its value a hundred fold, and the one who receives it shall treasure it forever.

6. You shall not value gifts received by their cost. Even the least expensive may signify love, and that is more priceless than silver and gold.

7. You shall not neglect the needy. Share your bless-ings with many who will go hungry and cold if you are generous.

8. You shall not neglect your church. Its services highlight the true meaning of the season.

9. You shall be as a little child. Not until you become in spirit as a little one are you ready to enter into the kingdom of Heaven.

10. You shall give your heart to Christ. Let Him be at the top of your Christmas list.

Anyone keeping these commandments is sure to have a blessed Christmas."
