HAPPY NEW YEAR Changing Seasons, Healthy Changes.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Happy New Year!

December was the season for Christmas Trees, holiday parties, joy and gift-giving. We’re now entering the season of exercise machines, diets, guilt and New Year’s Resolutions. It’s a time to evaluate the previous year, face what is to come, and commit to some changes. It can be a very good time of year.

We need times, and reminders, for change.

I remember my dad talking about one of the disadvantages of living on a tropical island. I grew up

in Papua New Guinea, where my parents were missionaries for 18 ½ years. We were always near

the ocean, and did a lot of fishing, snorkeling, swimming, and basking in the sunshine. (Of course

my parents had a lot of work too, but that’s not the issue here.) Dad talked of missing the seasons

in the USA. He missed them not just because he liked watching the leaves change color, and the

snow-covered ground, and the new shoots popping out in the spring. He missed the reminder of

the passage of time. He had no approaching winter to remind him to store things away, and no

sudden sunshine to drive him to spring cleaning. He missed the motivations of that yearly cycle.

We have the reminders of the weather – the barren tree branches stretching into the harsh winter

air. We also have the New Year’s reminder. Another year is done. What did we do? How will we

begin this next year? What will we recommit to? What will we change?

I’d like to make some suggestions. They will help you, as a Christian and a member of this commu-

nity in Christ called Advent Lutheran Church. They will also make a difference to the congregation.

The results can be energizing in our ministry and worship.

Here are some recommended New Year’s Resolutions. Commit to them – really commit to them -

for at least January, then decide if they are worth continuing.

If you do commit, I’ll bet you continue!

1. I will worship weekly, seeking to praise God and to listen to God’s word, to be welcomed and to welcome others.

2. I will pray daily, deepening a connection with God, asking for God to help me and to help Advent to be faithful to God’s will.

3. I will reach out to at least one person in Christ’s name, either by discussing my faith with them or inviting them to church with me.

It doesn’t sound tough, does it? Just good basic discipleship. It’s not tough…unless you’ve gotten

out of the habit, or things have been too hectic, or you’ve been awfully tired, or ….

Make the new year’s resolution. Ask God to help you keep it. Then do everything you can to make

this the best decision of the new year. May God bless you, and Advent Lutheran, in the year ahead!

Your Partner in Christ’s Ministry, Pastor Mark

Adult Forum and the Living Lutheran Magazine

The Living Lutheran magazine belongs to the people of the ELCA in all our diversity. Every Advent household receives a monthly copy of this wonderful resource that:

Nurtures awareness of Christ’s presence in our lives and the world.

Shares stories of God’s people living their faith.

Connects us with the global Christian community.

Provides an open forum for discussion.

Challenges us to bring God’s grace and care to all.

Each week during the Sunday morning Adult Forum we will read and discuss an article from the Living Lutheran. Feel free to bring your own magazine, but copies will also be available. Although reading the article before you attend is helpful, it is not necessary. Many of the articles we will be discussing are only 1 page. Please join us Sundays mornings at 9:55 in the parlor!

Advent’s Book Club – “Drama High” by Michael Sokolove

Sunday, February 10 from 6-8 PM – Light refreshments will be served

Advent’s Book Club is a great opportunity for fellowship, discussion, and expanding your hori-zons. Books are available to borrow via “Book in a Bag” from the Indian Valley Library. Please see Carrie Ryan or Karen Evans to borrow a book.

Why would the multimillionaire producer of Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon take his limo from Manhattan to the struggling former steel town of Levittown, PA, to see a high school production of Les Misérables? ... To see the show performed by the astoundingly successful theater company at Harry S Truman High School, run by its legendary director, Lou Volpe. Michael Sokolove, a Levittown native and former student of Volpe’s, chronicles the drama director’s last school years and follows a group of student actors as they work through riveting dramas both on and off the stage. This is a story of an economically depressed but proud town finding hope in a gifted teacher and the magic of theater.

Upcoming Youth Events

10th Annual BOX City Event – March 23-24

Box City is sponsored by Saint James Lutheran Church, Limerick In partnership with area congregations to support Main St. Homeless Shelter, Pottstown. During this event, youth hear real-life stories about homelessness. They will discuss this social issue, and experience sleeping outside in a cardboard box. The event is for youth in grades 7-12 and their adult chaperones. More information to come.

Tuscarora Lutheran Retreat (formerly Harvey Cedars) – April 5-7

Join hundreds of youth (grades 7-12) as we gather together to worship, form new friendships and praise God. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and per-fect. Romans 12:2

SOUTH DAKOTA Servant Trip – Summer 2019

In July 2019, a group of Advent youth will be traveling to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. They will be traveling with youth throughout the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod (SEPA). During this servant trip they will be assisting the Tree of Life ministries in their daily work while gaining a better understanding of the Lakota culture and the Native American experience. During the ten day trip, they will also participate in cultural learning experiences, hold small group discussions, encounter a variety of Lakota people, do some sightseeing, experience the beautiful land of South Dakota and worship with our Lutheran brothers and sisters while in Rapid City.

This is a big trip to make from Pennsylvania, costing about $1,300 per person with meals, lodging, supplies, admission costs and travel expenses. Support our youth by becoming a shareholder! Shares will be available to purchase starting in January. As a shareholder you will receive: a post card from the youth during their trip, an invitation to the Shareholders Dinner in the fall and most importantly, an impact in the faith formation of a youth at Advent.

We have a blast doing all of the fun activities that Bear Creek Camp has to offer during the winter, plus all the other great activities you’ve come to expect! The weekend kicks off on Friday night and runs until Sunday after lunch. This year at CONNECT our theme is “Love All.” We’re told that we should love others just as God loves us but what does that really mean? Is it really possible to love everyone? During the weekend we will be talking about how actions such as including others and showing compassion when someone makes a mistake can go a long way and help us to learn how to truly love one another. Come with open hearts and join us for some great conversations! Register online at

Advent Lutheran Church presents The Souderton High School Alumni Men’s Chorus Encore Christmas Concert.

- Jon Leight, director - Sunday January 6, 2019, 3:00 pm

This could be your last chance to hear live Christmas music until next year!

The Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Jon Leight, was organized in 1997. They present over

twenty concerts annually for churches, retirement communities, and area corporations. Leight

was formerly the Vocal Music Director at Souderton Area High School for twenty years. The chorus

is accompanied by Beverly Stover and Susie Childs (piano), and Vincent M. Ryan (organ).

All participants in the chorus are SAHS alumni. A reception will follow. . For more information:

Bear Creek Camp (Reflections by Pastor Mark)

As chaplain of Bear Creek Camp Summer Camp Week One in 2018, I was preparing for Friday bonfire (worship) and asked some kids the following:

“What positive change has BCC made for you?”

Here are seven of the first eight answers I got.* Not the best of the best. These were THE actual comments (sequentially presented) from a group of youth where I asked the question.

Helped me grow up, understand my faith more, figure out what I believe.

Made me be a happier person, gave me a place to go (away from the daily stuff, phones, etc)

Meeting new people, which helps support me (and I can help them)

Making new friends, getting away from things (more time to explore and connect to nature; phones keep you inside).

Gives me something to look forward to every year.

Brought new friends; made me a happier person.

Helped me make a lot of new friends.

A pretty glowing endorsement. So if your daughter or son is not going to BCC, why not? If money is an issue, we can take care of that; let’s talk. If there’s another concern or question, voice it. I’d love to listen and share.

Pastor Mark Singh-Hueter

* Editor’s note: FYI, The eighth answer was hilarious, but not appropriate for this article.

Pastor Mark will be chaplain again, for week 1 of Summer Camp ( June 16-22).

This is his 13th year as the 1st week Bear Creek Camp Chaplain

Krispy Kreme - a Sweet fund-raiser

On Saturday, December 15th Calvin Ribelin held a fundraiser for this Eagle Scout project to raise money to build 10 raised planting boxes at the Salford Mennonite and Advent Lutheran Church Garden. Produce harvested from the garden is donated to individuals in need in our community and to local nonprofit agencies. Calvin sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts outside the Landis store in Harleysville.

His goal was to raise $700 to purchase the materials needed for his project. The total amount raised through donations and doughnut sales totaled $1,790. Calvin is extremely grateful to the members of Advent, Salford Mennonite Church, and the local community for supporting him in his Eagle Scout project fundraiser. Money Calvin raised that will not be used for his project will be donated to the garden. He hopes to build the planting boxes at the garden in late March or early April before the planting season.
