Each Advent we have a Parish Mission. Advent is a time when we think of Mary and Joseph waiting for the child Jesus to be born and on the first Sunday after Christmas we remember the life of the Holy Family. That’s why this year’s very practical Mission about family life goes to the

heart of the season and the heart of the world. Pope John Paul used to say “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world”; that means this Mission is for all of us. The talks by experts from the Counseling Center at Catholic Charities will take place at 7 p.m. on the evenings of Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, December 5h through 7th, in the church. Join us, and invite your friends.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 5, 2010December 5, 2010December 5, 2010December 5, 2010

FROM OUR PASTOR The first reading today gives us the image of the Tree of Jesse - the ancestral line of Jesus: “On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom”. Jesse was the father of King David, the origin of the royal line of the Kings of Israel. Yet by the time of the prophet Isaiah the kingdom had been split and the royal line compromised; the great family tree of Kings David and Solomon now seemed no more than a stump. In spite of this apparently hopeless situation, Isaiah prophesied that God could bring a new shoot from this stump; there would be a new King, the Messiah. We Christians recognize Jesus as that long-awaited Messiah, born in “royal David’s city” and still reigning as Christ, our King.

At the beginning of his Gospel (which we will be hearing all year) Matthew gives us the full genealogy of Jesus Christ, and medieval artists translated this into elaborate family trees - drawn on manuscripts, carved in stone, or illustrated in stained glass - to visibly trace the line from Jesse to Jesus. These Jesse Trees were a way of emphasizing that Jesus was the fulfillment of all the hopes of the Old Testament.

We, too, like to trace our family trees, with the added interest here in the United States of discovering who it was that left “the old country” to immigrate and start the American branch. However, the Gospel reading has a different take on family trees. Jesus told his contemporaries that they could not rely on their ancestry; rather, God wants to see a healthy tree in the present generation. Otherwise, “every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire” - not even a stump will be left! The Gospel challenges us not to look back but to look forward to the future growth of our family tree.

That’s why we are having a rather different Parish Mission Parish Mission Parish Mission Parish Mission this year. The title of the Mission is “Making Stronger Families” “Making Stronger Families” “Making Stronger Families” “Making Stronger Families” and the Mission talks will be given by different counselors from Catholic Charities. The Counseling Center at Catholic Charities has a team of State-licensed counselors with Master degrees. They carry out pre-marital evaluations for the Diocese, provide support for individuals and couples, train parents in communicating with and effectively disciplining their children, and guide people through crises from unexpected pregnancy to divorce. The counselors will be drawing on their rich experience for the three talks they will be giving at Saint Charles; they will look at relationships and dating, coping in today’s world, and parenting. These are topics of perennial interest and it will be good for all of us to be more knowledgeable about them. We want to do the best for our own families and then, later in life, people sometimes ask for our advice because they know we are Christians. As Pope John Paul II said, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live”. Come to the Mission in order to grow in wisdom and play your part in strengthening our families.

Once a child reaches the “age of reason” (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult is—through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic.

If you are considering having your child—age 7 or older—become Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

Your tax-deductible donation supports the day-to-day care of thousands of elderly

Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests.

The response to the Retirement Fund for Religious remains unprecedented, yet sadly, so does the need. Skyrocketing health-care costs and market-related declines in retirement savings make it increasingly difficult for religious communities to provide adequate elder care. Escalating the concern is the expected shift in the ratio of wage-earning members to those who are retired. Currently, the income of those in compensated ministry bridges a significant portion of the retirement funding gap, but in the coming years that will no longer be the case.

give generously to next week’s second collection.
