SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY

In making class choices, students should consider both graduation and college entrance requirements. After discussing

their choices with a counselor, teacher, and parents, the selection is finalized. Much advanced planning and guidance are

provided for each student prior to registration. If there is an error in the schedule, the student should attempt to see

his/her counselor as soon as possible by making an appointment. We recognize that schedule changes are disruptive to

the students and teachers. Class changes will NOT be granted to accommodate a change in a student’s lunch period, if a

student is failing, or if a student requests a different teacher. Every effort will be made to keep students in originally

scheduled classes. Decatur High School offers year-long courses.

The following procedures shall be utilized when making schedule changes at Decatur High School:

1. Changes made by the counseling/administrative team shall be made for the following reasons:

a. Class balancing

b. Graduation requirements

c. Student is misplaced in the incorrect level of class (i.e. student placed in Geometry without taking Algebra 1)

d. Student has already earned credit in the class during previous enrollment, including summer school course

work

2. Changes requested by the parents/guardians shall be considered after the following:

a. Student discusses concerns with teacher

b. Parent/guardian, teacher, student, and counselor will meet to discuss any remaining concerns

c. The counselor will communicate with the grade level administrator

d. After the meeting between the counselor and administrator, a plan of action will be implemented

3. Students who wish to drop a course:

*The third credit of science and math are chosen by the student based on the student’s interest and High School and

Beyond Plan, and approved by the parent/guardian, or if the parent of guardian is unavailable or does not indicate a

preference, the school counselor or principal (WAC 180-51-068).

**Personal Pathway Requirements (PPR) are related courses that lead to a specific, post-high school career or educational

outcome. These are chosen by the student based on personal interest and the High School and Beyond Plan, which may

include Career and Technical Education. These are intended to provide a focus for the student’s learning.

***Students receiving special education services are eligible to earn a Certificate of Individual Achievement (CIA)/High

School Diploma by meeting standards in the Washington Alternative Assessment System (WAAS). Eligibility is determined

by a student’s IEP team.

INTERNET ACADEMY POLICY

Students choosing Internet Academy must follow the table below to determine the number of classes they may take

without charge. Any additional classes taken would be at the student/family’s expense.

Classes at Decatur You may take at Internet Academy

Taking 6-7 classes at Decatur Eligible to take 1 class at Internet Academy

Taking 4-5 classes at Decatur Eligible to take 2 classes at Internet Academy

Taking 2-3 classes at Decatur Eligible to take 3 classes at Internet Academy

Taking 1 class at Decatur Eligible to take 4 classes at Internet Academy

1. Internet Academy classes should be completed off-campus with student’s own technology. Students working off-

campus will receive a modified day sticker from the attendance office placed on their student ID card.

2. If the Internet Academy class cannot be scheduled at the beginning or end of the day, students with own

technology must be in a designated location and have the approval of their counselor. Students must sign-in in

the attendance office for security purposes prior to going to the designated area.

ONLINE LANGUAGE LAB POLICY

Students who choose to take a world language in our Online Language Lab will have the opportunity to take an online

class on Decatur’s campus during the school day. In this course, students will learn directly from an online teacher who is

proficient in the language. Students will demonstrate proficiency by recording their spoken language into a microphone

and through written tasks. Attendance will be tracked like any other class at Decatur and a Learning Facilitator will be

present in the room to monitor progress, help students set goals, and facilitate community building and cultural

experiences, such as conversation labs. Language Lab is open to 9 – 12th graders and is ideal for self-motivated students

who are comfortable with an online learning environment. Since Decatur’s classes are year-long, a student who is not

successful in Language Lab will have the opportunity to take a different style of online class through Internet Academy

during that period. Students with an IEP or 504 Plan may want to discuss this type of learning environment with their

student support team. Online Language Lab is housed in a computer lab, however, Internet Academy will determine if

other supplies, like headphones and a microphone, are required by the student. Materials for lend may be available.
