Accordingtoa2010surveyof4,500AmericansbyUnitedHealthcare,68percentofthosethatvolunteeredinthepreviousyearreportedthatdoingitmadethemfeelphys-icallyhealthier;73percentnotedthatitloweredtheirstresslevels.Meanwhile,29percentofvolunteersthatsufferedfromachronicillnessclaimedthatgivingoftheirtimehelpedthemtobettermanagetheillness. Otherstudies,byresearchersatBostonCollege,foundthatwhenchronicpainsufferersvolunteeredtohelpotherswithsimilarconditions,theysawtheirownpainanddepres-sionlevelsdecrease.Atleastsevenstudieshaveshownthatpeoplethatregularlyvolunteerorgiveofthemselveslivelon-ger—especiallyiftheydoitforgenuinelyaltruisticreasons. Manyspiritualtraditionsbasedonmeditation,prayerandsolitudemain-tainthatnothingshoulddivertusfromourspiritualpractices—leastofallafamily,whichtakesupsomuchtimeandenergy. InIndia,onetraditionholdsthatspiritualdevelopmentbelongstoalaterstageoflife,roughlyafterage50.Itisonlyoncewehavelivedthroughahouseholderstage,bringingupandprovidingforourchildrenandlivingaworldlylife,thatwecanturnouratten-tiontotheinnerworld.Afterourchil-drenhavereachedadulthood,wehavetheprivilegeofmeditatingregularly,andlivingmorequietlyandsimply. Manyparents,however,findthat—
farfromhinderingit—bringingupchildrenactivelyadvancestheirspiri-tualdevelopment.Seenintherightway,parenthoodcanbeaspiritualpath,bringingaheightenedsenseoflove,wonderandappreciation.
Natural MindfulnessAfterall,childrenaresuchstronglyspiritualbeings.Theynaturallyhavemanyofthequalitiesthatadultsworktocultivatethroughspiritualdevel-opment.Forexample,childrenarenaturallymindful.Theyconstantlylivefullyinthepresent,andtheworldisalwaysafantasticallyrealandinterest-ingplacetothem. AschildpsychologistProfessorAlisonGopnik,oftheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,putsit,“Babiesandyoungchildrenareactuallymoreconsciousandmorevividlyawareoftheirexternalworldandinternallifethanadultsare.”Theyhavewhatshecallsan,“…infinitecapacityforwonder,”thatadultsonlyexperienceattheirhighestmoments.“Travel,meditationandromanticpoetrycan
giveusafirst-persontasteofinfantex-perience,”ascanexperiencingbeauty,shesays. Thisillustratesoneofthemostpositiveeffectsofhavingchildren:Theyhelpustobecomechildrenagainourselves.InTaoism,theidealistobeasspontaneousandcuriousasachild,exhibitingtheiropennesstoexperience.Onthephysicalplane,TaoistpracticeslikeTaichiandqigongaimtohelpthebodybecomeassuppleandflexibleasachild’s.
Beyond SelfishnessAlltheworld’sspiritualtraditionstellushowimportantitistotranscendourownselfishness;tostopseeingour-selvesasthecenteroftheuniverseandtryingsohardtosatisfyourownde-sires.Theyadviseustohelpandserveothers,sothatwecanmovebeyondourseparateegoandconnecttoatran-scendentpower.TheeightfoldpathofBuddhismaimstocultivatethisselflessstateandideally,thepathofparent-hoodcan,aswell.It’simpossibletobeagoodparentwithoutbeingpreparedtoputyourchildrenfirst. Muchofparenthoodisaboutself-sacrifice.Gopnikremarks:“Imagineanovelinwhichawomantookinastrangerwhowasunabletowalkortalkoreveneatbyhimself.Shefellcom-pletelyinlovewithhimatfirstsight,fedandclothedandwashedhim,grad-uallyhelpedhimtobecomecompetentandindependent,andspentmorethanhalfherincomeonhim…Youcouldn’tbearthesappinessofit.Butthatisjustabouteverymother’sstory.Caringforchildrenisafastandefficientwaytoexperienceatleastalittlesaintliness.” ThepoetWilliamWordsworthde-scribedhowchildrenseetheworldas“…appareledincelestiallight[having]thegloryandfreshnessofadream.”Yet,asadults,thisvision,“…fadesintothelightofcommonday.”Havingchildrenofourownhelpsustoreawakensomeofthecelestiallightwithin.
