Commandant Paul Hinojosa Hello Marines, Navy FMF Corpsmen and Chaplains, associate members and families! We had another great meeting last month with 44 members in attendance and 37 meals, of which 27 were free per a toy donation. We have a great detachment, by far, one of the best in the state. The year has come and gone, my time as Commandant has come to an end. I had a great time, a great staff, and a great Detachment. Two years ago, I accepted the roll of Commandant with an objective of getting the name of Pikes Peak Detachment out there. I think we succeeded in doing that with the pride and professionalism we exhibited during our events and functions. Sure, we had some fun along the way but we did it in a professional manner, well at least 80% of the time. It has been my honor to represent this detachment and I am looking forward towards the years to come with our new Commandant Steve Schwartz and staff. Semper Fi, Paul

Commandant Paul Hinojosa Commandant elect Steve Schwartz

Senior Vice Commandant Terry Crum Thank you for your participation in the Detachment election last month. This is the first time in a number of years that there was more than on candidate for the office of Commandant. I wish Steve all the best during his time as Commandant and I would like to thank Paul Hinojosa for his service as the Pikes Peak Det. Commandant for the last two years. The Pikes Peak Det. has had a number of outstanding Commandants in the past and I believe Paul did his part to uphold the tradition. Ooh rah! Please read the obituaries at the end of this newsletter. Also keep the CO Dept. Senior Vice Commandant Phil Price and Dept. Chaplain Steve Abeyta in your thoughts and prayers. Phil is battling cancer and Steve is recovering from a stroke. Both of these Marines are fighters and these two Marines and their families could use your support. Here is hoping everyone is enjoying the holiday season and I look forward to seeing you all at the December Detachment monthly meeting. Semper Fi! Terry

Junior Vice Commandant Pat Carty Greetings Marines, FMF Corpsmen, Associates and Friends. This has been a very active year for our Detachment. Thanks to all members and associates that helped support our parades and various events here in Colorado Springs and, throughout the state. We are blessed to have such a committed and Outstanding Detachment! The last parade of the year was the Manitou Springs Christmas Parade celebrating Toys for Tots held 30 December. Please read Russ Miller's account of the parade. Our last scheduled major event is the Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony to be held 07 December, 1100 - 1200, at the Pioneers Museum, 215 S. Tejon. Refreshments to follow. At the last meeting I mentioned the speaker at the November Veterans Luncheon, at the Western Omelette, Jill Reid. Jill gave a very informative presentation on Parkinson's Disease. If you or anyone in your family is suffering from this debilitating disease please contact Jill at: www.co-parkinson.org If you have not attended one of the Veterans Luncheon meetings, please consider doing so. The guest speakers present many different topics pertaining to Veterans and their welfare along with other interesting subjects. You might learn something that can help or inform you. The meeting is held at the Western Omelette, 16 S. Walnut St., Colorado Springs. The meeting officially begins at 1130 but, come early to meet, greet, have breakfast/lunch and, talk to your veteran buddies. We have veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and, others in our midst. Hope to see you at the next MCL monthly meeting 15 Dec. when we install our elected and appointed Detachment officers. It's great to see new members stepping forward to take on these responsibilities to keep our Detachment the best in the Colorado Department, Rocky Mountain Division and, dare I say National! I have no doubt one of our leaders will be the MCL National Commandant in the near future. Semper Fi, Pat

5. Marine Corps Ball 2018: The event was a huge success, however there were some reports of issues during the event, as well as some questions as to how some of the veterans were billed. ~ Paul – if you had any issues with your room bill, please see me. ~ Roger – the Ball committee would like to get feedback on this year’s ball. These are the things we are already aware of: cost, per the contract, the bar hours ended at 2230; the DJ was told to shut down by the resort, lights came on; too many speakers, people lost interest in the 2nd; eating during speakers; steak knives dull; 2 different gifts was misleading, many people thought there were 2 per person; the MC and swordsman were too loud.

- Items brought during the meeting: Dinner service/timing (too soon, should wait until speakers are done); some steaks were too rare, sent back; cake was too small for # of people; table too close together. On the positive side: Iris- staff was extremely helpful, she was escorted to her room so not to get lost, rings forgotten and turned in by housekeeping.

Sr. Vice/ Web Sgt.; Terry Crum 1. Let me know if you are not receiving the Det. Email. Pictures from the Ball can be seen by

clicking a link on the header for the Det. website. If you have more pics and are willing to share, please send them to me or post on the detachment’s Facebook page.
