Let me start the New Year by apologizing to all of thepessimists out there, because I am officially declaring 2013 as the Year of the Optimist.Why am I being so optimistic?Business leaders must alwaysremain positive, even in theface of tremendous adversity.

The greatest opportunitiescome along during thetoughest of times. Look nofurther than the words offormer British Prime MinisterWinston Churchill who said,

“A pessimist sees the difficultyin every opportunity; anoptimist sees the opportunityin every difficulty.”

As we look back at 2012 and consider theimpact of social media and technology onmarketing, nothing can match the incrediblerise of social media and mobile comingtogether to create an entirely new mediaplatform for consumers, businesses and not-for-profit organizations as well.

Over 70% of all social media interaction occursover mobile devices. This seismic shift hascreated new opportunities from mobile apps, asFoursquare, Pinterest and Instagram and otheronline media continue to change the way weare exposed to brands. In the coming year andthe foreseeable future, it is critically importantto understand the impact of their presence onconsumers and advertisers. According to arecent article in the Huffington Post:

• Monthly active Facebook users now totalnearly 850M, with 488M regularly usingFacebook mobile (source: All Facebook)

• A whopping 77% of B2C companies and43% of B2B companies acquired customers through Facebook (source: Business2Community)

• 175M Tweets were sent daily via Twitter in2012, which increased by 1M users (source: Infographics Labs)

From themigration to electronic medical records and operating roomrobotics to the deployment of state-of-the-art medical telemetry, wewill see the fusion of science and technology come together likenever before and generate amazing opportunities in multiple fields;• In fact, Westchester County is already the epicenter of the NYBioHud Valley life sciences cluster with over 30 biotechnologycompanies in Westchester alone, including two of the largest in theworld, Regeneron and Acorda Therapeutics. These incredible medicalresearch leaders are working today on tomorrow’s cures andtreatments for some of the world’s most complex diseases and medicalconditions, and rapidly expanding by adding employees just to keepup with the demand. Every one new scientist adds five other jobs tothe local economy – three professionals and two non-professionals;• Where is the “Mind” part of this decade? Given the complexityof the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (better known asObamacare), and a potential coming overhaul to the nation’s taxcode, we will experience a rapid increase in the need forconsultation services just to handle all of the changes to the waywe conduct business in both our personal and professional lives. Itis not hard to imagine accounting and law firms, insuranceproviders and financial advisors all adding to their ranks, as newfederal healthcare requirements and eventual tax code changesengulf a woefully unprepared public.Opportunities are everywhere you look in Westchester County,but only optimistic eyes will see them.

Robert Sanders was recently quoted in Corporate &Incentive Travel Magazine for a destination meetingheld in San Diego last year. He stated, “We did anextensive search. They (the client) wanted people tomeet in an elegant environment to do productivebusiness and celebrate a recent acquisition.” Thethree-day annual meeting of 375 of the firm’spartners and employees took place at the 757-roomHotel del Coronado, a beach resort with 65,000 sfof indoor and outdoor meeting space. “San Diegogave us everything we needed. It has anenvironment of elegance and lots of activities.”
