It’sapleasuretoreportonthisspring’sdevelopmentsatBrandeisInternationalBusinessSchool(IBS).

Ourheadlinenewsisasurgeingraduateapplications.WithourJanuarydeadlinebehindus(twomoredeadlinesarestillahead),wehave32percentmoreapplicationsforthenextincomingclassthanthistimelastyear(1,700vs.1,290).Applicationstonearlyallprogramsandfrommostgeographicregionsareup,andthisshouldmeanevenstrongerandmorediversestudentsnextfall.ThenewMasterofScienceinBusinessAnalyticshas340applicationsfor35seats.Thereisnosingleexplanationforthesechanges—someU.S.programsarereportingdeclines—butBrandeisIBSisbenefitingfromhighrankings,timelyinnovationsinprograms,andtheuniversity’sreputation.

Meanwhile,asproposedinourplan,weareaggressivelyexpandingcollaborationswithbusinessesinBostonandbeyond,partnershipswithacademicpeersworldwide,andtieswithotherpartsofBrandeis.TheseinitiativesfitwellwithPresidentRonLiebowitz’sstrategytomakeBrandeis“newlyextroverted”—thatis,engagedintheworldandwidelyrecognizedforitsstrengths.

ThebusinesspillarofthisworkisledbyFrankFessenden,whoarrivedinJanuaryasourfirstExecutiveDirectorofCorporateRelations,thankstoagenerousgiftfromBoardCo-chairAlanHassenfeld.Frankbringsidealqualifications—heledtheHiattCareerCenteratBrandeisandtheCareerCenterofBostonCollegeearlierinhiscareer,andthenheldseniormanagementpositionsinBoston“ed-tech”firms.Hehasprioritizedexpandingourfieldconsultingprojectsandstrengtheningourbusinesssystemsforcollectingandutilizinginformationonpastinternshippartners.

AcademicoutreachisledbySeniorAssociateDeanKatyGraddy.HerworkhasfocusedonpartnershipswithprestigiousuniversitiesinordertoraisethevisibilityofIBSgraduateprograms,enrollexceptionalstudents,anddeepenfacultycollaborations.WerecentlysignedagreementswiththeUniversityofParis,Dauphine;Ben-GurionUniversityinIsrael;KeioUniversity,thesecond-rankeduniversityinJapan;FudanandZhejiangUniversities,bothamongthetopfiveinChina;andConnecticutCollege.WereaffirmedourpartnershipwithWellesleyCollege,andKatyalongwithProf.AldoMusacchiowillsoonvisitMexicotomeetwithpotentialuniversitypartners.

ConnectionswithinBrandeisareaschool-wideeffort.WearefindingwaystohelpundergraduateandgraduatestudentscollaboratemorecloselybyinvitingmoreoutsidegroupstoeventssuchasourGlobalGalaandhostingseveraluniversity-widestartupcompetitions.Wearealsojoiningotheruniversitydepartmentsinhigh-profilecampusevents,includingFineArtsinaconferenceonart,andWomen’s,GenderandSexualityStudiesinaneveningonwomeninleadership.

Averyfullspringsemesterisunderway.AselectionofFebruaryeventsoffersaglimpse:

• OnFebruary2,IBShelditsfifthandeasilybestGlobalGalabeforeastanding-room-onlycrowdintheuniversity’sLevinBallroom.Students,facultyandstaffofferedawesomeperformancesrangingfromskitstosongs,danceandjazz.Foodfrommanycontinentsillustratedjustatouchofourculinarydiversity.Greattalent+highspirits=atrulymemorableevening.

• OnFebruary4,theHassenfeldFamilyInnovationCenterhostedthefourthannualSPARKchallenge,a$50,000competitionforstartupsfromacrossBrandeis.ThreeIBSteamswereamong

thewinners,includingthefirst-placealumni-studentteamthatdevelopedandisnowimplementinganinvestmentstrategythatusesartificialintelligencemethodologytoidentifyandavoidemotionaltradingpatternsinassetmarkets.

• OnFebruary9,IBShostedtheUSfinalsof“SmartFifty,”acompetitionsponsoredbytheIndiangovernmenttofind50solutionstoIndia’seconomicandsocialchallenges.IBSmanagedtheU.S.round,inpartnershipwiththeIndianInstituteofManagementinKolkataandwithgreatsupportfromboardmemberReubenAuspitz’69.Morethan200U.S.,EuropeanandIsraelicompaniesexpressedinterest,andwenarrowedthefieldtofiveremarkablewinners(seewww.brandeis.edu/smartfifty).India’sConsulGeneralinNewYorkdescribedthedayasthebesteventhehasseensincehearrivedintheUnitedStateseightmonthsago.

• OnFebruary13,theRosenbergInstituteforGlobalFinancehostedProfessorStephenCecchettiforhisinaugurallectureon“MakingFinanceSafeandAccessible”astheRosenFamilyChairofInternationalFinance,basedonhistenureaschiefeconomistoftheBankofInternationalSettlements.

• OnFebruary22,IBSheadstoSanFranciscoforalumniandstudenteventsincludingapaneldiscussiononnewdirectionsinSiliconValleyorganizedbyPaulWalborsky’89MA’90(recentlyoftheNewYorkTimes)andfeaturingStephanieSchearTilenius’89MA’90,CEOofVidaHealthandothers.FifteencurrentIBSstudentswillbealsowithus;theywillbeontheIBSSiliconValleytrekvisitingwithalumniandseniorstaffatGoogle,Facebook,SalesforceandReflektive.

• OnFebruary27,thePerlmutterInstituteforGlobalBusinessLeadershiphosts“AcceleratingWomen’sCareers,”aneveningwithwomenexecutivesorganizedincollaborationwithCatalyst,thenationalinstituteoffemaleexecutives.Thisunusuallytimelyeventisgeneratinginterestacrossthecampus;sixotherBrandeisorganizationshavejoinedtheInstituteinpromotingit.

Laterthisspring,IBSwillcelebratetheBoston-IsraelinnovationsystemwithMassachusettsexecutivesandofficialsandconfertheAsperAwardforGlobalEntrepreneurshiponUdiMokadyandLiorDiv,CEOsofleadingIsraelicybersecurityfirms.OnMarch20-21,DeanGraddyandProfessorNancyScottofFineArtswillhost“LootedArtforSale!”withakeynoteaddressbyStuartEizenstat,aseniorofficialintheCarterandClintonadministrationswhoorganizedtheWashingtonConferenceonHolocaust-EraAssets.LaterinMarch,theIBSRealEstateCouncil,ledbyBoardCo-chairDavidHodesandProfessorLindaStoller,willsponsoranetworkingeveningfeaturingcurrentrealestateprojectsbystudentsandprofessionals,includingalumni.Afulllistofthisspring’seventsisattached.

Ontheadministrativefront,threebusinessschooldeansfromtheAssociationtoAdvanceCollegiateSchoolsofBusiness(AACSB),ouraccreditingbody,willvisitIBSinMarchforareaccreditationreview.Meanwhile,thesearchforanewdeanisnowinitsfinalstage,andthesearchcommitteeexpectstomakerecommendationsbeforetheendofthesemester.
