TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2012

The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.

—James 3:18

MINISTRY FAIRE "There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord" (1Cor. 12:4-5)

Next Sunday, September 30th, our parish will participate in a Ministry Faire. The

Ministry Faire will be held in the Pavilion after all the Sunday Masses. The Faire is an opportunity to see all the ministries of

our parish at one time. You, as part of our parish community will have the opportunity to learn how the ministries of our parish help and serve others. This will also help us see how we can have an impact on the lives of

other parishioners and the larger community in which we live and work.

Please stop by and visit.

Neighborhood kids

Do you remember being lost as a child? Do you remember being scared of the dark, of an angry dog, of a snake, of a thunderstorm? Do you remember being too small to handle a big glass or reach the peddles of your first two-wheeler?

Many of us grew up watching MisterRogers Neighborhood. In his cardigan and tennis shoes, Fred Rogers made the world a less scary place and helped us kids understand that we could make it someday as big people in this scary world.

What many parents and young viewers did not realize was that Fred Rogers was a Presbyterian minister specifically or-dained by his church to minister to children through televi-sion. The Reverend Rogers also completed graduate studies in child development at the University of Pittsburgh.

MisterRogers said that even as adults we learn from our child-hoods - and from the lives of our own children in the present:

"Because we were children ourselves, we have lived through the same early childhood years that our children are going through now . . . [But] We've forgotten what it's like not to be able to reach a light switch. We've forgotten a lot of the mon-sters that seemed to live in our room at night. We've forgotten how it feels to be in the midst of a temper tantrum. But those memories are still there, deep inside us, and they can some-times resonate within us from some sight or sound or event - or from something our children say or do, or even from seeing our children struggle . . .

"Because we were children once, the roots of our intuitive empathy are planted within us. We know what it's like to feel small and vulnerable, powerless, helpless, scared and con-fused. When we can feel something of what our children might be feeling, that's empathy. And it's our empathy that helps us feel more sensitive to our children's needs, feelings, and concerns. It's our empathy that will help us as we try to figure out what our children need from us."

[From The MisterRogers Parenting Book.]

The child represents for the disciple of Jesus the vulnerabili-ties, the fears, the doubts we all experience in our lives - and the child reminds us of Jesus' call to us as his disciples to take up his work of reaching out to others paralyzed by such anxi-ety and despair. In the service we give and respect we afford to others as sons and daughters of God, Jesus says, we wel-come into our midst the very presence of God. Our empathy and care for the child and child-like in our midst mirrors the love of God for us despite our own failings and fears. Only in putting ourselves in the humble service of the lowly child can we hope to claim a place in the kingdom of God.

True Wisdom

Adult: What evidence do you see in the world around you that many do not accept Jesus’ teaching on power and ambition? Child: Why is it wrong to feel envy for what belongs to another?

Talking to your kids about cell phone safety The more advanced cellular devices become, the more functions they have available. Sending pictures over the Internet is something that chil-

dren do all the time. Photo-messaging on cell phones is no different. Children need to be aware why all pictures are not appropriate to send. They also need to know that if they receive a message or image that makes them un-comfortable, they should immediately tell you or an-other trusted adult. For a helpful pamphlet on cell phone safety, please visit the National Crime Prevention Coun-cil website at www.ncpc.org, and click on “cell phone safety.”

For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Weight Control: Two traps to avoid If you are trying to follow a healthy diet, perhaps even lose some weight, these two obstacles could be preventing you from staying on track.

1. Don't judge a food's healthfulness by its name. In a study from the University of South Carolina and Loyola University Maryland, diet-ers rated a dish as healthier and more nutritious when it was called a "salad" versus a "pasta" dish, even though the ingredients (diced vegetables, pasta, cheese, salami, and dressing over a bed of lettuce) were identical. Dieters also ate more candies when they were called "fruit chews" instead of "candy chews." As the authors point out, the food industry does a good job of confusing people by altering the names of products to make them sound healthier (and lower in calo-ries)--sugary drinks, for instance, are marketed as "flavored waters," potato chips are called "veggie chips," and milkshakes have become "smoothies." Take-home lesson: "Focus on the ingredients of foods rather than their names, as many foods are healthy in name only," says the study's lead author Caglar Irmak. Pay attention to portion sizes, too, of course.

2. Beware of the influence of overweight people on your eating be-havior. Contrary to what you may think, you are more likely to in-dulge in unhealthy foods if you see someone who is overweight, according to a study from the University of Colorado. Participants filled out questionnaires that included a photo of either an overweight or normal-weight woman. Afterwards, when given the chance to dip into a candy bowl, those who had seen the photo of the overweight person took significantly more, on average. Similarly, people ate more cookies after viewing an image of an overweight person.

This study offers more support for the notion that obesity can be socially contagious. As shown in a study in the New England Journal of Medicine several years ago, people are more likely to become obese if they have family and friends in their social network who become obese.

Take-home lesson: "Reminding yourself of your personal health and weight goals can help you stay on track and avoid overeating, who-ever you are with," recommends lead author Margaret Camp-bell.
